btw itc has opened intern offers here in kanpur. schlum is yet to visit here. sad to know that u missed it. can u temme wat do they ask 4 the intern.

thr r many ppl here who r doin gud in corporate world....hope they can put some lite.
it wud be gr8 if some1 provide the information ragardin where n whom to apply.

Hi Preeti,

I can give a few practical suggestions based on my limited knowlwdge.

- Its much easier to get an internship in europe (especially germany) than it is in US,UK, Aus. or Canada.
- Most european internships require a duration of atleast 3 months. So it you could somehow manage to take some extra days off then you should try to get an internship for 3 months.
- If you do not get a funding commitment for an internship in germany, then you should contact DAAD (newdelhi.daad.de) and inform them. They can provide funding for summer internship in germany, especially if you an IITian.
- The best idea is to search university pages and find some faculty members with similar interests as you and send your resume with a nice cover letter
- Most ppl in IIT apply with similar cover letters for internship..(and this pisses off many ppl as they get 100 identical mails)It is advisable to reformat your cover letter as per the faculty member's interest to whom you are applying.
- Use your iit's official email add. for applying, applications from yahoo or hotmail email ids are often treated as junk.
- Just to give you an idea...you will normally get 1 response for every 20-30 applications you send..so be prepared !

Finally..doing an internship at the right place is very important for your career. If you are seriously interested in a research career after your graduation, only then apply for internship in univs. Otherwise try to get an internship in some good industrial organization, you might get a PPO or PPI from that company.

If someone is interested in pursuing intership in CS/ELec..I can provide some useful suggestions for some nice RnD institutes in europe.

ok..Good luck then

6. PRACTICAL TRAINING/INTERNSHIP FOR INDIAN AND GERMAN STUDENTS

Objective: To give an opportunity to Indian and German students to carry out practical training (internship) as a part of their on-going course of study.

Target Group: Advanced senior level students enrolled at a university/research institute.

Duration: 2 to 6 months

Scheme: Students must cover their own air-fare;
employer/host institutions pay nominal monthly allowance for living expenses.

Application Procedure: Candidates are expected to get in touch with institutions where they wish to go for training themselves, i.e. establish contact with appropriate employers and get the necessary letter of acceptance. Thereafter, they can write to DAAD New Delhi for necessary departure clearances.

Indian Participants: DAAD, in a very few cases, arranges placements for training in specified fields. Information on this can be obtained from DAAD New Delhi Office February onwards.

German Participants: Candidates should get in touch with local IAESTE committees.

Folks,

It was only 3-4 years ago that the global economy was booming, U.S. unemployment rate was less than 4%, and there was recurring talk of shortage of engineers and IT experts. It was during this period that lot of undergraduate students could get summer internship in US, Canada, Germany and Australia etc. That time is long gone and situation today is dramatically different.

Just to remind you how easy it was to bring computer related people to USA, many of you might have read about one of the wealthiest Indians in US (in San Fransisco area) and who is now in jail, used to bring young girls under the guise of computer experts and use them as his sex slaves.

At present, the chances of getting a paid internship in North America on your own are close to zero. I hope things will improve soon.

So, the best strategy is to look in India. If you are interested in higher studies then it is a good idea to do your internship under a prof. at IIT. But, if you are interested in working after B.Tech. then look for internship in industry.

Hello!!

Birbal Singh ji!!

Look its not that hard to get training in your part of globe but one had to begin process some what early......this year one of my IIT friend had gone for 2 months training in MICROSOFT at Seattle ...but needless to say...that he was execeptionally bright...!!

Yes through DAAD in particular IITian community is going in 100+ number for their internship.....But let me alighten you that these trips are more of Fun...since there is not much to learn in these internship.....If one is looking for quality kind of internship India too have great places...!!

Regards
Niti

Yup !

Nice to meet Mech guy from IIT n what bout preeti's deptt. ?

N its really great to heard ki JAT girls bhi Buzzing the IITs.

yeah -> First of all why are you worried for intership ??? n if you want to apply then think in dec. at rite time...n send your resume with first mail..never wait for second mail OK.

if you want to go for job or IIMs after ur B. Tech. then never think to get summer training from west unis ...get ur summer training in good Industries.

some of my IIT Kgp friends did their intership from west uni. they got some problems to get job in good industries.

Yaar you are Mech guy so chill out man....think to get training in good Automobiles companies...where life in vibrating with Lux Cars...

for any further help let me know..

I don't know how much the things have changed in IIT's but it used to be that you will get training according to your CGPA in your class. So if you are in lower half of the class forget about getting internship outside india. No prof will write good reco for you and as soon as other higher CGPA guys/gals will know about it they will also apply thus removing you from the scene.
I did my training in ONGC in Surat. It wasn't the greatest place to do the training but it was a good experience.
When you go for job interviews nobody is interested in where you did your training. To get a job you have to crack their written exam and then their interview (where again your CGPA will be a factor)
So my advice will be not to worry where you will do your training. Go to any place and try to make a difference there. If nothing else you will know what you don't want to do in your life (3 months in ONGC taught us never to work there unless you are in seniormost post there) and improve your CGPA.

By the way, RC which hall?

One of my friend's friend just went back, after his "internship" with a professor at penn state university. So i think professor in US, just like in the europe are employing the same strategy, get the work done with minimum expenditure..(do the math for a desi student)

So do apply to US.

Look for young, struggling for tenure, has lot's of simulation coding/experiment type of work (all field). Older professor don't do research, they just write research papers as fiction, so they don't need any students :)

But I don't think it's a good idea to waste your 3rd year summer working as a collie for some professor. Even if you are interested in reserch, you ARE not expected any kind of research activity in your undergrad.

In most IIT's, It is called Practical Training, in relevant INDUSTRY and not internship.

What I would suggest is to to go to some place new, big, where you would see lot's of other things, within india go down south, banglore mumbai etc. Some people try to arrange it near their home town/at their relative's work place, pretty bad idea.

For industry, again the only thing that is important is the NAME of the industry, and not what you do, as you can't really do anything, you are just supposed to see things happening there.

BTW it's also worth it to come abroad, if you are getting it. You get exposure, that's what count.

it was gr8 to see so many ppl responding. thanx a lot 4 ur valuable advises.
i agree that there is not much in research to do after 3rd yr. but summer training/internship in some western univ/industry adds a gr8 value to ur resume.
some ppl do go to blore n other places in india but the feedback is not that good....the working environment u get in some european/us univ is far better. this is wat i have heard...i aint speaking frm my personal experience...so pls no offense intended.

anyway wat kind of industry can we apply in....as in wat post. n above all whom to apply in an industry.
looking forward 4 u guyz help.
thanx

cheers

you IIT ppl why are u keen bout intership from w uni ....some of my friends did their intship from germy n swid now working in Telco..some of my friends did in GE,HLL,ITC they got ppo n now working smoothly...

doing masters from USA doesn't stand any mean for B.Tech from IITs unless they are not in Top 15 univ....

Never apply in any uni <15 rank coz some of our seniors did their masters from USA dull uni now returning to india.....due unable to get much$$$

my advise do job after ur BTech n get 1-2 year experience in crack the IIMs...fir duniya hogi muthi mein....
cheers

dude intern in itc is not so cool to get.....it hardly takes 3-4 guyz for intern.
same is the case with hll....last yr it didnt even recruit a single person....intern to door ki baat hai.
placement scenario aint that gud nw a dayz....or u jus' end up joinin ne s/w job.

hi mr. palsaniya...
thanx for the cool advice.... rather i too share u'r point of view... i'm very much a management kinda guy.... though i 've maintained a cgpa of 8 ..but i'm doing a lot of management stuff in my insti.
my basic plans as for now r too maintain 8+ n go for a decent core job... n then get into management... how do u like it??.. rather lot of junta r doing it!!.
that's why my basic aim was to get a core internship with some firm in india only...like u'r toyota itself... telco , honda, tvs,itc etc.(somehow ppl took the thread to western univ... watever.... it aws anyway very knowledgeful).
now all these companies dont pick internship junta from campus... one has to apply off campus..... so in case u know some one in these indus. who cud help me get an internship (peacefully).... it'ld be real gr8!!
thanking u again'
naresh
