The Tamil Nadu Homeopathy Medical Council (TNHMC) has made a representation to the state government highlighting the use of homeopathic medicines as a preventive and cure to tackle the spread of the deadly HINI virus.
Swine flu: Kick away the fear
The council has submitted a memorandum to the State Health Secretary and the Director of Indian Medicine conveying the effectiveness of homeopathic medicines against swine flu and has sought their permission for the administration of the drug in the wake of the shortage of Tamiflu tablets. Currently, antiviral drugs such as Tamiflu and Relenza are being used to treat swine flu.
'Tackle swine flu with homeo drugs'
The council along with an expert panel has come up with a list of medicines to be used as preventive and for treatment of the deadly swine flu. ''A five-member expert committee of homeopath doctors analysed the epidemiological aspects of the HINI virus and arrived at a list of preventive and curative medicines, '' said Dr Gnana Sambandam, President, TNHMC.
How to to protect yourself from getting sick
Among the medicines that have been suggested for swine flu treatment by the expert panel are Aconite 200 as a preventive, Arsenicum Album 200 as a preventive and cure, Bryonia Alpah and Baptisia as curative drugs.
''These medicines have been found to directly act on all swine flu symptoms including the initial symptoms such as simple cold and cough to the most acute ones such as bronchopneumonia,'' avers Dr N. Jayakumar, one of the member of the expert panel.
Spotting swine flu in children and adults
Following the lack of swine flu testing labs in the state, the council has also asked the Tamil Nadu government to authorize homeopathy clinics to examine swine flu cases. ''There are more than 7000 registered homeopath practitioners across the state. If the government gives a green signal, we are ready to act as authorized testing centers so that we can do our bit of service to the public,'' Dr Gnana Sambanam adds.

The use of homeo medicines to treat epidemics is not new, says Dr Gnana Sambandam. Earlier, homoe medicines have been put to effective use during epidemic outbreaks such as the plague in Gujarat, encephalitis in Andhra Pradesh and the Chikungunya fever in both Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. ''In fact, the governments of Kerala and Andhra had officially insisted on using homeo medicines as a preventive for Chickengunya,'' he says.
