Tactical voting and jat heartland

I am taking active part in every election in India
sence 1St general 1952 to April-May 2009.
i have taken part in every Election in UK sence1967.

Sir!

I could not figure out something. How could you vote in both India & UK since 1967? Dual-citizenship came around only recently. And even that does not allow you to vote in India. From what I know you have to renounce your Indian citizenship when you take up UK citizenship and then you have to re-apply for Indian citizenship. So, you are breaking the law somewhere.

GOD BLESS YOU AND MY INDIA

I wonder where your loyalties lie. When you take the oath of Citizenship of another country, thats where your loyalties are expected to lie.

WHAT IS TACTICAL VOTING
If your party of choice doesn't stand a chance and you don't want to waste your vote, you could always cast your lot with the lesser of the remaining evils.

Tactical voting could be a way of ensuring that your least-favourite choice does not get elected where you live. Now the Internet has made it easier to barter your votes with a similarly disgruntled constituent elsewhere.

When you vote for the lesser of two evils, you are still voting for evil. I believe voting is an endorsement of the status-quo.

If people really want to change things they need to abstain from voting in large numbers to the point that the current system looses its credibility. Such form of civil disobedience will lay the groundwork for citizens to come up with a social framework where Politicians are reduced to being servants of the people whose only job is to make sure that the law of the land and the rights of the people are protected. Any new law or legislation should be introduced by means of a ballot measure. People need to have the power to approve or disapprove the proposed laws and legislation that have the power to regulate their lives.

Call India the world's largest democracy, or anything else that give continuity to the trance that you live in. The fact is that India has fallen back into a feudal system where there are the haves and the have-nots. The haves are the ones with the political power and the have-nots are the ones that toil day and night to feed the class that wields such power.

India shining? Yeah right? Ask those whose lives were uprooted because their homes looked ugly on a landscape that is supposed to host the Commonwealth Games which will run for no longer than a few days, how bright is the city on the top of the hill.

Pehle Mussalmanon ki Ghulami ki! Fir Goron ki aur Jameendaron ki ! Ab ghareeb bechara Goron ki (Globalization), Jameendaron ki aur Sarkaar ki Ghulaami karta hai!

There is only so much burden that you can lay on a mule. After a certain point its back is going to snap. Endorsement of a corrupt system by means of voting for the "lesser of two evils" is like placing further burden on the oppressed class.

my dear sumit, as far as rulers/ politicians are concern, you are right & they are very selfish, corrupt & most of them are criminals. The tactical voting is proposed in favour of the community so that jats keep on holding important place & say in the governing body of the state. we are niether discussing good/bad politicians nor we are comparing jat leaders with non jat leaders.(please donot bring secularism or philosophi in the discussion, because we are discussing a family welfare matter on the family forum & some of us have started talking/ suggesting because others community people are allready practicing the tactical voting & putting us at disadvantage)
I suggest we should discuss the topic on following headings/points
What is tactical voting, what are benifits, How it can be done, what are likely repercautions/ problems etc. About the point of mr dudee taking part in elections of both the nations, ofcourse he the best person to answer but what I understood from his thread is that he had been taking part in elections that may be as suporter/ reporter/watcher & may not be voting in both the nations. we should discuss the topic in as many details as we can, but must not find faults in an individual, otherwise the day is not faroff when people will stop wrighting on the forum, infact many brothers have already started avoiding the forum. I think tactical voting is not electing lesser evil or Bure me se Bura. Also it has nothing to do with any political party. regards

In UP, Brahmins do tactical voting, not Muslims'

Dr Abdul Waheed, reader in the department of sociology and social work at the Aligarh Muslim University, is an authority on socio-political issues related to the Muslims of Uttar Pradesh [ Images ].

He has done his MPhil on 'The Phenomenon of Dowry among Muslims in India' and his PhD thesis was on the 'Social Structure and Economy of an Urban Muslim Community: A Case Study of Muslim Banjaras of Baheri, District Bareilly, UP.'

His two books -- Muslim Artisans, Craftsmen and Traders: Issues in Entrepreneurship and Muslims of Uttar Pradesh provides good reference material for serious studies.

In his gloomy office at AMU, Dr Waheed spoke to rediff.com's Sheela Bhatt:

Uttar Pradesh has more than 3 crore (30 million)Muslims. That amounts for around 23 percent of Indian Muslims. According to the 2001 census, UP's population was 16 crore (160 million) and Muslims are 18.5 percent of the population.

In UP, according to the 2001 census, out of 70 districts (UP now has 71 districts) 21 districts have a sizable population of Muslims and are recognised by the government as districts having 'minority concentration'.

Ghaziabad, Meerut, Muzzafarnagar, Bijnore, Saharanpur, Moradabad, Rampur, Bareilly, Pilibhit [ Images ], Bulandshahr, Badaon, Lucknow [ Images ] and Bahraich districts have more than 25 percent but not more than 50 percent Muslim population. Rampur has the highest concentration of Muslims in UP along with Bijnore and Moradabad.

I belong to Bareilly, so I have observed the politics of neighbouring areas like Rampur, Pilibhit and Moradabad quite closely.

Muslims of western UP are in a precarious position this election.

Why?

Because they believe that no secular party -- whether it is the Bahujan Samaj Party, Samajwadi Party or the Congress -- has done anything for them. They thought the Bharatiya Janata Party [ Images ] is their enemy party. Now, they are confused what to do? Whether to defeat the BJP or not? To do so, they are forced to vote for candidates and parties whom they don't like.

That is why I say the Muslim voters are in a very precarious position. They are not supporting any party or candidate of their choice. They are under compulsion and they know that the secular parties for whom they cast their votes have not done anything for them. But what is the choice? The BJP? They tend to think the BJP is the greater evil amongst these choices.

Invariably, Muslims are not voting for Muslim candidates either. In Bareilly district, Praveen Aron is the Congress candidate. Muslims are going to vote for Aron. The BSP candidate, Islam Sabir, is not confident of getting Muslim votes.

In Pilibhit, Maneka Gandhi was always supported by Muslims. Even in Sanjay Gandhi's [ Images ] time Muslims received the couple well. I don't know who provoked Varun to make those (anti-Muslim) statements. Sanjay and Maneka used to stay in (BSP MP) Akbar Ahmed 'Dumpy's farmhouse.

Muslims were shocked when their son Varun Gandhi [ Images ] made those statements. Neoriya Hussainpur town, which is located on the Pilibhit-Almora highway, has a 90 percent Muslim population. Maneka Gandhi used to get 90 percent of their votes. From the same town, Haiji Riyaz, an MLA, is contesting on a Samwajwadi Party ticket against Varun.

Riyaz belongs to the Banzara caste; it is a trading community who have 60,000 votes. After Varun Gandhi's speech many Banzaras will not vote for Riyaz. They realise if they vote for him, then Varun Gandhi will win the election so they are shifting their votes to the BSP or V M Singh of the Congress, whoever they think can defeat Varun.

Muslims think now no Hindu will cast their vote for the Samajwadi Party because of the communal polarisation brought in by Varun. The Samajwadi Party candidate is dependent on Muslim votes. Precisely for that reason Muslims don't find him good enough and winnable.

Yadav voters are few in this area so Riyaz can't bank on their votes. Pilibhit has got many Lodhs, so the BSP gave a ticket to Budhsen Varma. It seems that the division of Muslim votes between the BSP and Congress will help Varun win.

Muslim voters are intelligent; they know (Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister) Mayawati [ Images ] put Varun in jail to get their votes. No political logic will apply across the board in UP. BSP or no BSP, Muslims will not cast their votes for a candidate they feel will lose. Unless there is an issue like the Babri Masjid, Muslims do not vote en masse. Like Hindus they are also divided into castes.

If they think that the BJP will win a seat, generally, not specifically, they vote negatively. If they have a choice, then they may vote undivided.

I think the Brahmins of UP vote tactically, not Muslims.

Brahmins number 9 percent of Hindus in UP. They are more organised because they are literate, have been in power, are cautious and well-informed. Muslims in UP are illiterate and poor, they are difficult to organise. They are generally concentrated in ghettos where they actually compete with each other. Do you know that?

Their everyday life revolves within ghettos. In eastern UP there are many constituencies where Brahmins number around 20 percent or so. Mayawati's social engineering worked well there. Her formula works if she attracts Brahmin, Dalits and Muslim votes in her candidate's favour.

When Brahmin votes are present, her combination works better because Brahmins vote for Brahmins, but Muslims don't vote for Muslims candidates as a rule.

In this part of India religion comes second after caste. Caste is the most important factor amongst Muslims and Hindus during an election.

Rampur has the largest concentration of Muslims in UP, but they know that actress and current Samajwadi Party MP Jayaprada has done something for them. Congress candidate Noor Banoo's family has lived in Rampur since Independence, but her family has not done enough development work in the district.

Muslims have the lowest literacy rate of 33 percent in Rampur (the literacy rate of Muslims in UP is 48 percent).

Now, the view has gone around that the Samajwadi Party has collaborated with Kalyan Singh [ Images ], the destroyer of the Babri mosque. So Muslims may not vote for Jayaprada despite having a soft corner for her. She is likely to lose the election due to the polarisation set in by Kalyan Singh joining the Samajwadi Party.

I think the Jats, Lodhs and Kurmis, the middle-class in UP, has been indoctrinated to a great extent by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Because of the Arya Samaj and BJP influence, their minds have changed. So, Mulayam Singh does not have control over the Yadavs as he did before. All Dalits will support Mayawati but not all Yadavs support Mulayam Singh.

No other caste, barring the Dalits, can be taken for granted.

I believe the highest number of seats in UP, in spite of incumbency, will go to Mayawati. The Samajwadi Party will come second. The Congress will get just 8 to 12 seats. Day by day, I see that a large population is indoctrinated by the RSS in the urban areas of UP. The BJP will increase its tally in UP. It will get anything between 15 to 20 seats.

The BJP has an alliance with Ajit Singh's party which has won so far because of Jat and Muslim votes. But in western UP, there is social tension between the Dalits and Jats. Muslims are not likely to back Ajit Singh this time because of his partnership with the BJP.

The scheduled castes and Muslims, who constitute almost 40 percent of the votes, will move towards the Congress or BSP here.

In UP, I don't see any uniform trend. In western UP, the Samajwadi Party will lose to the BSP -- Moradabad, Rampur, Pilibhit, Badaon and Bareily. The BSP and Congress are in a direct fight to win over Dalit and Muslim votes to contain the BJP.

The biggest problem with the Congress is that it is not a political party. It is a party of political bureaucrats, especially in case of Muslims. They never allow a Muslim leader to emerge from below. They impose Muslim leaders from above. Noor Banoo, Mohsina Kidwai and Salman Khurshid are Muslim leaders in UP who have been imposed from above.

Muslims are the football of three players, namely the Samajwadi Party, the BSP and the Congress.

Muslims want to cast positive votes, but where is the opportunity?

In the given circumstances, Muslims would like to vote for a winning candidate and not for one who will defeat the BJP, but since the Samajwadi Party, BSP and Congress are insensitive to their basic demands they don't have the option of positive voting.

Time and again it is proved that maulvis and madrassas are unable to influence Muslim votes. I can tell you that on most Indian issues there are vertical and horizontal divides amongst Muslims. It is a stereotype to say that Muslims are one bloc. Yes, some rare times emotional unity emerges. In 99 percent of events, caste, class and sectarian tensions keeps Indian Muslims divided.

To begin with, there is a deep divide between the Shia and Sunnis, Barelvis and Deobandis and then it goes on and on. Sufis are so different from others. Barelvis are popular people who validate the folk and devotional traditions of Islam. But amongst them saints like Shadi Mohammad Sheikh and Cha Madar have different followers. You call all of them merely Muslims.

Tactical voting

Think about Tactical voting.
in your last hour. of prayer
Jab Daru utar ja.
Tactical voting a winning factor
That can change face of Haryana .

A day of reckoning for Haryana

Haryanvis will vote tomorrow to decide who should govern them for the next five years.

The elections have been called seven months early by the ruling Congress, which was emboldened by its success in the last Lok Sabha elections, winning nine of the 10 seats.

Now, the Congress is facing six opponents - the INLD, the HJC, the BJP, the BSP, factionalism and price rise, not necessarily in the same order. Rather the last two have become allies of the Opposition.

The main strengths of the Congress are a badly divided Opposition and the virtual absence of the anti-incumbency factor, hitherto a hallmark of Haryana politics. However, during the run-up to the elections, the ruling party fumbled many a time. It could not decide its candidates well in time. In order to balance various factions, many candidates were transplanted in constituencies to which they were strangers, infuriating local party men. No wonder, at many seats, “the Congress is defeating the Congress”.

Much before the elections were announced, the Congress leadership had given an impression that it would deny the ticket to many sitting MLAs to bring fresh faces. However, again due to factionalism, most MLAs managed the ticket. As a result, though there is no anti-incumbency against Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, there is a strong ill-will among voters against their representatives on certain seats.

Initially, the Congress kept the issue of Chief Minister open, as is its tradition. However, towards the end of the campaigning, AICC president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul gave more than vague hints that Hooda would continue to lead the party if it again formed the government. Why they did so, is known only to them.

If any single party seems to have made remarkable gains during the campaigning, it is the INLD of former Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala. Though he failed to open his party’s account in the Lok Sabha elections, lost its ally and was dumped by his long-standing supporters, Chautala led a high-pitched campaign. He, along with his MP son Ajay Singh Chautala, though both are contesting the elections, criss-crossed the state, energising his supporters and announcing that he might be down but not out. He came out with the most alluring promises in his election manifesto to woo the voters.

The HJC of Kuldeep Bishnoi, the BJP and the BSP are working hard to register their presence on the political scene of the state.

The SAD of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal is contesting two seats, Ambala city and Kalanwali, in alliance with the INLD. The Akalis have made it a prestige issue to win these seats. The reason is obvious. The Akalis want to puncture the movement for the creation of a separate committee to manage Sikh gurdwaras in Haryana.

But the manner in which opposition parties walked in and out of alliances before the elections, made a wag to say: “It seems it is the Congress versus the divorcees.”

These elections will set the agenda for the future politics of the state. The results of this poll will decide if regional parties will continue to provide an alternative to the Congress in the state or some national party will have the space in the future to emerge as an alternative to it.

Tactical voting

TACTICAL VOTING WILL DECIDE THE RESULT OF HARYANA
9 SISRA LOKSABHA HALKA SEAT
HIASR- BHIWANI- MAHINDER GARH
GURGAON-FARIDABAD
AHIRWAL MEWAT HALKA WILL BE DECIDING FACTOR.
TACTICAL VOTING CAN CHANGE RESULT IN
ADAMPUR
NALWA
HISAR
HANSI
NARNAUD
SISRA
FATHEHABAD
BARWALA
AND MANY OTHER PLACES.
USE YOUR VOTE WISELY

The prestige of the Indian National Lok Dal will be at stake in nine assembly segments falling under the Sirsa parliamentary seat as Haryana goes to polls tomorrow.

As Sirsa is the home district of INLD supremo Om Prakash Chautala, his party has put in maximum efforts on these nine seats.

In fact, Chautala himself has been contesting from Ellenabad and his elder son Ajay Singh is contesting from Dabwali and two seats are attracting the attention of the media and political observers from across the state.

A large number of “Chautalas”, including the fourth generation of former Deputy PM Devi Lal, are active in this seat. Aditya, Abhishek and Anirudh - three sons of Om Prakash Chautala’s deceased brother Jagdish in Ellenabad and Dushyant and Digvijay, two sons of Ajay Singh, in Dabwali. Besides, Ajay Singh and Abhey Singh have contributed a major share of their time to Sirsa despite their commitments elsewhere in Haryana.

Abhey’s two sons - Karan and Arjun - have been looking after their grandfather’s campaign in neighbouring Uchana Kalan.

Facing among others in the nine seats of Sirsa parliamentary seats, the Chautalas have three members of their own clan - Ranjit Singh (Congress), son of Devi Lal, from Rania, KV Singh (Congress), nephew of Devi Lal, from Dabwali and Ravi Chautala (Independent), son of Chautala’s younger brother Partap Singh, from Dabwali - as their opponents.

Victory in the nine assembly segments coming under Sirsa parliamentary seats is very important for the INLD, the political party trying to bounce back in tomorrow’s elections after losing in the last three consecutive elections.

The party had won in Dabwali, Ellenabad, Rori and Ratia in the 2005 assembly elections, while its lead shrank in Ellenabad, Kalanwali and Narwana in the parliamentary elections held in May.

The party definitely has an edge in Ellenabad, but it is locked in a triangle of straight contests on other seven seats in these elections. Kalanwali, ninth seat under Sirsa, is being contested by INLD’s ally - Shiromani Akali Dal - and there too it is locked in a direct contest with the Congress.

As people go to polls tomorrow, good performance on nine seats falling under Sirsa hold the key for any recovery of the INLD during these assembly polls.

Yes. Prof Sampat Singh has taken over both INLD and HJC very well. Initially it seemed to be tough HJC fort in Nalwa but situation is totally different as on today.

There are around 40000 Jat voters, 14000 Kumhaars and only 8700 Bishnois in Nalwa constituency. 80% of Jats are with Prof Sampat Singh as he is only Jat Candidate. Otherwise also, today a big chunk of Jat votes is for Hooda and Congress. Brahmin votes in the constituency is additional bonus point for Prof Singh.

To me there will be no surprise if INLD remains second and HJC as 3rd in Nalwa.

we jats are big hearted people. we should not promote jatism in politics if we are to prosper. take all castes along & win the elections because we are just 28% of electorate and require others support . once in chair do justice on merit .

make jats in obc list & community will automaticlly benefit as jats of rajasthan have already benefited, thanks to pilania ji for awakening jats in rajasthan.

we need someone like pilania ji in haryana also.
