The Brave Jats

Its so sad to learn that this warrior is being treated like peace of shyt by Army and Rajasthan Govt.

http://in.news.yahoo.com/kargil-hero--shot--then--wounded--by-govt-110710007.html

He got the nation’s second highest gallantry award at 30.

At 44, he feels humiliated and shortchanged by the Army he was once part of, and the civil administration of Rajasthan, his home state. Meet Havildar (retired) Digendra Kumar, Maha Vir Chakra.

“Did I not fight to protect the motherland? How can I be humiliated like this?” Kumar wants to know.

Kumar has earned the right to ask that question. A little more than two years after joining the Rajputana Rifles in 1985, he won a reputation for bravery as the Indian Peace Keeping Force took on Prabhakaran’s Tigers in Sri Lanka’s jungles. It was all in a day’s work for Kumar as he shot down militants, blew up enemy ammunition depots, and rescued captured paratroopers. A few years later, Kumar was making short work of militants in Kashmir’s Kupwara, earning a Sena Medal for his courage. The year after Kupwara, 1993, saw Kumar at the siege of Hazratbal, an action for which he was commended yet again.

By 1999, the much decorated Digendra Kumar had been honed into one of India’s best commandos. On June 13 that year, he showed just what stuff he is made of, playing a key role in the recapture of the 15,000-foot Tololing Top, the first Indian success and turning point of the Kargil War. Kumar, who took five bullets in the action, was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra.

Betrayed On India’s 67th Independence Day, this 44-year-old real life hero feels betrayed by the country he fought and almost died for. First, the Army denied Kumar the disability benefits he is entitled to on being classified as 80 per cent disabled by an Indian Army medical board. When they did—and only after Kumar moved the Armed Forces Tribunal—they took two years. Kumar is still being denied the ex-gratia benefits he is entitled to as a Kargil veteran. And the state government, which was to allot Kumar agricultural land for being a gallantry award winner, has marked out the prize at a location almost 500 km from his Sikar home.

The Army didn’t give Kumar his disability pension because he “retired voluntarily”. The Army paid up only when the Armed Forces Tribunal bench at Jaipur pulled it up for the “inhuman and unfortunate decision that deserved to be deprecated”.

A penalty of `30,000 was imposed on the Army for its “lack of sensitivity”. The Army took another two years to implement the tribunal’s order of April 12, 2010. And it’s still not all right. According to the Fifth Pay Commission, a disability of over 76 per cent should be treated as 100 per cent disability, said Kumar’s counsel, Col. (retired) S.B. Singh.

Now, the Army continues to deny Kumar the ex-gratia benefits announced by the government under its ‘Kargil Package’. These included an exgratia payment of `6 lakh for 75 per cent to 100 per cent disability, Rs 5 lakh for a dwelling unit, `1 lakh per child for education, assistance of Rs 1.20 lakh to parents, state-of-theart medical treatment, vocational training for the injured and insurance amount of Rs 10 lakh. The reason for this, the Army maintains, is that Kumar retired voluntarily, six years after Kargil and four years before scheduled completion of service.

Give benefits Col. Singh won’t have it. “When the tribunal awarded him pension for war-related injuries he should be given all war-related benefits,” he said. “I have decided to move court against the Army,” Kumar told MAIL TODAY.

The Rajasthan government has done its bit to add to the mess. It allotted Kumar the piece of land he is entitled to in the command area of the Indira Gandhi Canal at Nachna in Bikaner district. Kumar says the rules governing such allotments enable a gallantry awardee to get land in his home district. These rules were amended in 2006 but even the new version says that a soldier can get land in his home district if he received a gallantry award before 2005, said Kumar.

The Sikar Collector accepted Kumar’s request on land allotment, and forwarded on October 22, 2008 a proposal on the issue by the tehsildar of Sikar’s Neemka- Thana tehsil. The collector’s recommendation has disappeared within the state’s colonisation department. And nobody, including Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, has the time to listen to Havildar (retired) Digendra Kumar, Maha Vir Chakra.

The contribution of the community is second to none in nation building.

The times have changed and the Jats are contributing

in all the fields including therein politics, bureaucracy,

business, services et. all, and that too with distinction

to make their motherland great.

Do we have " Jat Soldiers memorials", in Jat dominated areas?

We talk so much about them here, but do the villagers of the area from where these soldiers came from, really know what their community men stood for?
I think we should have big memorials for all the soldiers, who were lost in any war throughout the history.
Each area where population of Jats is big must build unforgettable shrine or memorial place for such soldiers, and each shire must have names and pictures of such soldiers, so that the locals never forget the sacrifices made by their ancestors.
An yearly homage to such soldiers must be paid, so that we remember their contribution.

There is no point in putting bravery to words if we can not put it to stones.

How about making a humble beginning with a "Who and Who" type of book on jat heroes ? Monument can be the next step.

Good idea.

The Jatland is already there with a lot of mater on them at its Wiki pages !

More is invited from the members, kindly subscribe/add/edit information,

Thanks

a small book having brief s( 2-3 pages for each) about 30-40 jat heroes..and after publication..it can be distributed in villages..like fellow jatlanders can contribute few thousands in cost and distribute 400-500 copies( in each village) in their own villages... a very small and initial effort to make jatts aware about their heroes....

second thing is we hardly find photos of jat heroes...so posters, calendars etc also can be printed and distributed........

First suggestion ok.

As regards, second part, it would be of interest to know that a few years ago Mr. Jyani, the incharge of Research and Publications at Gandhi Gramothan Vidyapeeth, Sangaria Rajasthan, had brought out five six calendars with brief notes on each of the Jat Heroes who had contributed in freedom movement and social reformation fields. Initially these calendars could be had from them by those who want to know about the glorious past of about hundreds of the Jats.

Newer persons could be added to new calendars for further supplementing the information to them.

Thanks and regards

NB : A few years back these calendars were displayed at Maharaja Surajmal Education Institute at Delhi at the time of holding of a national seminar on Role and contribution of the Jats fo North Western India and I along with many others had purchased them.

You and other learned gentlemen tell so many tales of bravery, commitment, achievement, etc., but what is the use?
We are educated people who can read a write different langauges, search and read the information can do so at any moment of our lives but tell me, do the villages from where these soldiers and people came really know what these men did for their country or area?
Believe me there are so many myths and false stories that these villages might tell you but they would hardly recognize the contribution of the people who led by example. Villagers of these areas will gladly tell you myths, false stories, etc. related with religion, etc., but they will hardly remember the true story of the people you talk about.
That is why there is NO USE in blabbering these stories amongst ourselves.

The best thing would be to find out history about the people, their origins, their contributions and write it down on stones in form of monuments. This is not about one community of people, this is not about certain individuals, who did something for the society but rather a remembrance of the history of the area, the people, people who committed themselves for good in one form or the other in form of soldiers, farmers, fighters, etc.

This remembrance monuments should not be waste of public places, stones, like those done by leaders of Utter Pradesh in recent past, who erected huge personal statues cutting away stones from mountains and occupying public spaces for personal glorification. It makes me sad and leave me broken heated when i see stones being carried away from big mountains to make such self glorification statues. I can see the utter stupidity and thoughtless process of the people who are getting it done. If u blow the mountains and use its stones for other purposes, you spoil the entire ecosystem, an ecosystem that has taken millions of years of making. It is pathetic.

The real beauty of life lies in nature and the place where people live and not in big self glorification statues because every common human breathes, drinks and admires the nature around him.

Do these self glorification statues, family politics, filling self and family bank accounts, polluted water, polluted air and polluted soil hold bigger values then clean water, clean air and clean soil?
Once air, water and soil gets polluted these pollution's are irreversible for millions of years and are the main cause of human suffering in form of diseases and irreversible genetic disorders that go on for generations and are often irreversible.

Rather these remembrance place can be place of peace and tranquility, where history is written on simple slabs of stones with names, images and other details of the people who came from the area and did their contribution for people without any personal interest. These people can be of any community, caste, creed or religion. If such places exist, then people will realize the truth behind real doers and people who are just out there to make politics a family trade, politics as a means of earning money, terrorizing people, blindly exploiting natural resources, erecting self glorification monuments, etc.

It is essential the history of people, race and area be written in a language which any common person from the area can read.

Discussions of the kind educated people hold on sites like these must take place at local levels like that of villages where there is difference in thought process and real ignorance lies.
