The famous Jat people

Major Risal Singh (Joon)

Major Risal Singh (Joon) (d. 21 June 1940) was in Indian Army MC, 3/9 The Jat Regiment, commissioned in 1938. He was son of the author of the book History of the Jats. He was from Nuna Mazra village in Rohtak district in Haryana.

In 1940 the battalion was in the Middle East. At one time the Germans surrounded his battalion. He deployed his machine gun company, in the most threatened position and enabled the battalion to withdraw safely. His position was overrun. When the Germans came near he feigned death, and escaped detection. Once they had passed he started his carrier and escaped.

On his return form the Middle East he was posted to Army Headquarters but he volunteered to go with his Battalion to Burma, with the 5h Indian infantry Division.

At Mauglaw, he led a brilliant company attack and in hand to hand fighting, both sides suffered heavily, and the enemy had to withdraw. During this action Major Risal Singh was wounded by an enemy hand grenade. He was awarded the Military Cross and two of his Havildars; (Non commissioned Officers) were awarded Military medals.

During the 5th Indian Divisions advance form Imphal to Kohima to link up with the garrison there, the famous feature Singhbhum was help by the enemy and a brigade-sized attack was being proposed. Major Risal Singh took out a strong Patrol to find out the strength of the enemy dispositions. He found that the feature was not as strongly defended as had been reported. He on his owns initiative carried out an attack and captured Singhbhum. He was wounded again but refused to be evacuated beyond the MDS. He was awarded a Bar to his Military Cross for this action.

The Battalion attacked the hilly trenches of the enemy on the Imphal Kohima road, on June 20th but the enemy repulsed the attack with heavy casualties to the ‘A’ Coy of the Jats. The enemy position was again attacked on June 21. ‘B’ Coy of the Jats under the command of Major Risal Singh was in front of special Ni.1 picket. The machine guns of the enemy were silenced and captured. At the moment when Major Risal Singh was planning a further advance he was hit by machine gun fire on the head and gave his life bravely.

The Commanding Officer Col. Girty recommended his name for the ward of a Victoria Cross but that was not to materialize. Commanding Officer Girty sent a condolence letter, which reads:

"You will be distressed to know, but being a veteran you will compose yourself that your son, Major Risal Singh, has died for a noble cause in performing the sacred duty. I have lost one of my trustworthy companions. I have not seen such a gallant man, as Risal Singh in my service, which never cared for his life while doing his duty. There has been a great vacuum in the Battalion which cannot be filled by British or Indian Officers."

Note: The above account was written by Lt. Ram Swarup Joon, the father of Major Risal Singh, in this book “History of the Jats”.

To receive this news of the tragic death of his brave son, must have come as a quite a shock, but the author took it stoically. As a tribute to both father and son, I am putting this post to the list for wider circulation. Had he lived, this promising officer, would risen to a very high position in the Indian Army.

Chaudhari Girdhari Singh - The poet & Freedom fighter

Bhanwari Kaur (भंवरी कौर)

Bhanwari Kaur (भंवरी कौर) was sister of Gokula (गोकुला) or Gokul Singh (गोकुल सिंह) who was a Jat chieftain of village Sinsini/tilpat near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, India.

This article based on grass root informations collected by Jat Samaj monthly magazine[1] proves that this fact is wrong that the members of family of Gokula were converted to Islam.

The first serious outbreak of anti-imperial reaction took place among the Jats of Mathura district, where the imperial faujdar 'Abdun-Nabi', had oppressed them greatly. In 1669 the sturdy Jat peasantry rose under a leader, Gokula, Zamindar of Tilpat, killed the faujdar, and kept the whole district in disorder for a year, till they were suppressed by a strong imperial force under Hasan Ali Khan, the new faujdar of Mathura. Gokula was put to death.[2] The Indian historians, based on facts provided by Muslim sources, write that after the death of Gokula members of his family were converted to Islam. [3]

In early 1669 Aurangzeb appointed a strong follower of Islam Abdunnabi as Faujdar of Mathura to curb the Hindus of this area. Abdunnabi established a cantonment near Gokul Singh and conducted all his operations from there. Gokula organized the farmers not to give taxes to the Mughals. The Mughal soldiers retaliated, beginning the struggle of the farmers. Meanwhile Aurangzeb issued orders on 9 April,1669 to abolish the temples of Hindus. As a result large number of Hindu temples and ancient heritages of the period of Kushans were damaged. [4]During month of May, 1669 the faujdar Abdunnabi seized village Sihora. Gokula was there and there was a fight in which Abdunnabi was killed. Gokula and his fellow farmers moved further, attacked and destroyed Sadabad cantonment. Sadullakhan had founded Sadabad during the period of Shahjahan. This incidence inspired the depressed Hindus to fight against atrocities of the Mughal rulers. [5]The fights continued for five months. [6]

The rebels gathered at the village of Sahora (about 6 miles from Mathura). Abdun Nabi, the faujdar of Mathura, attacked them. At first he appeared to be gaining ground, but in the middle of the fighting he was killed on 12 may, 1669 (21st Zil-Hijja, 1079 A.H.) [7], [8], [9], [10]

Overjoyed at this success, Gokula ravaged the paragana and town of Sadabad (24 miles from Mathura) in the Daob. [11], [12], [13] The turbulence spread to Agra District also whereto Radandaz Khan was sent (13th May – 22nd Zil-Hijja) with a force to put down the rebels. Aurangazeb appointed Saf Shikan Khan as the new faujdar of Mathura. [14], [15] As arms failed to prevail, diplomacy was resorted to.

After defeat in Sadabad and Sihora the new faujdar Saf Shikan Khan started campaign to take revenge with Gokula. He had learnt that on the occasion of haryali teej festival, the young girls gather to celebrate it with malhar songs and swings in entire Brij region. The young sister of Gokula, Bhanwar Kaur, also joined the festival at a garden out side Tilpat on haryali teej in shravan month in year 1669.[16]

The new faujdar Saf Shikan Khan and his soldiers seized the place of celebration of haryali teej by the young girls and started misbehaving with them. Bhanwar Kaur along with her friends counter acted by attacking with ropes of swings and gofans. They could manage to get felled one of the soldiers from his horse and with sword obtained from him killed the soldier. This technique worked and the girls could kill more soldiers this way. Saf Shikan Khan at first got frightened but attacked Bhanwar Kaur. Bhanwar Kaur could defend the attack and wounded the horse of Saf Shikan Khan which left the field along with Saf Shikan Khan. Rest of the soldiers also ran away. the girls could kill 17 soldiers in the fight. Mean while a shot from a soldier who was running away killed the brave girl Bhanwar Kaur. Total 11 girls were killed in the war with Mugal soldiers. [17]

Big Man With Bigger Heart!

Raghvinder Malik

Big Man With Bigger Heart and big bro of our Harvinder malik, that could be the simplest intro to this man of the Jat Heart Land, Raghvinder Malik/ Raghu

A truly multi facet personalty, but the simplest man you can come across.
The man who faced camera at the age of 26, in front of none other than Shyam Benegal inside the Kiloi Shiv Mandir could places in the film world.

But this humble Jat always listened to his heart, did some big things for the land of his birth but not for himself.

Raghu has and can make friends with people from all the age groups.
When meets a young child of 5-10 years, he would take a coin from his pocket and would toss in the air and exclaim " aa o jadu dikhaun".
When he meets a Teenager and older, he could ask, " Panjja ladawega"?
And last but not the least , he can fit into the character of a typical witty Haryanvi Jat Tau with his graceful Haryanvi humor.

In fact, when ever I read a pure Deshi Joke from Harvinder on Jatland, I would immediately khow, where is that coming from.

Please visit these links for a brief glimpse in the life of this great Haryanvi Jat:

Badlu Singh VC was an Indian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
He was a ressaidar in the 14th Murray's Jat Lancers, Indian Army, attached to 29th Lancers (Deccan Horse) during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
On 23 September 1918 on the west bank of the River Jordan, Palestine, when his squadron was charging a strong enemy position, Ressaidar Badlu Singh realised that heavy casualties were being inflicted from a small hill occupied by machine-guns and 200 infantry. Without any hesitation he collected six other ranks and with entire disregard of danger he charged and captured the position. He was mortally wounded on the very top of the hill when capturing one of the machine-guns single handed, but all the guns and infantry had surrendered to him before he died.
Badlu Singh was born in Mukerera village in Chapra, Bihar.

at nne ba kone dudee samjhe, konee itt nne aadhi raat hihh nne morni baggan me aadhi raat me samjhejh, in bewakoofaan nne bacha le mere bhai...jatyann .. nee..

please correct me if i am wrong, as i am surprised not to see late. sh. deep chand bandhu (congress minister) in prominent TEWATIA's. if i am not wrong... i guess he was from sihi or may be kondli village in faridabad district.

like banias ruled in jats territory, in punjab bandhuji ruled in bania's territory at ashok vihar. he was from kondal at palwal bahin. little distance ahead lies mewat, where patti of tewatias, dagars,.. etc.. extends.. among meos, the lake meotis of herodotus...where many of these are muslim jats..

He rose by his own dent of merits n not just that he was Jat as usually many of Jat leaders rose and rise. Three greatest leaders of Jats Surajmal, Chhoturam, Charan, etc. rose in Jatland only and even in their wildest dreams they could not think of beyond Jatland.... here bandhuji living in an alien area in those people who sucked the blood of jats in punjab where till today jat dominates...were being ruled by bandhuji...in their own area..by the time they realised that bandhuji is a jat and not bania bandhuji has gone far ahead..though he never hid his identity...I saw the name plates at his door where anil tewatia and sushil tewatia was written at his doors..

he was the man who named one nahar singh road from ashok vihar to wazir pur depot. by the way kondal and naegaon villages of tewatia jats are still found in assam.

bhai yoi aapna burdak kaun sa kum sse tewatia brahm pal ji, innhen kyun ni recoommend karyo ji aap log?

thoda apne bare me bataoji

I could not understand the parameters adopted at Jatland to add names in the list of famous jat people. If some one was a minister or M.P. etc does not make him famous unless he has done something for the Jat community or nation as a whole. I have noted that if some one get through civil services he/she finds a place there. We should work out parameters and that place should be for those who have done something for the community or acheived a status for which jats should be proud of e.g. eminent scientists, educationist, sports person of international reputation , freedom fighters, social workers/activists etc.
