Friend in simple words I will put it as under:

Akal badaam kha ke nahin, thokaarn kha ke andi hai.

i.e.
One becomes wise not by taking almonds but by experiencing/facing the truths [toils and troubles] of the worldly life.

A life of hard work is the best teacher to make you wiser in true sense and not the life of luxury.

Others may have alternates to add to it!!!
