To those keeping Janmashthami fast tomorrow...

All things have their importance and value, I think. As you said rightly above, these things are subjective. You are right in your own way and I thank you for sharing your views. :star:

For me, only chai until midnight tonight.

Khair achchi baat ye hai, is chakkar me anaaz bachta hai thoda bohot to, aur jo mehange fal faroot kharidne ka saamarthya rakhte hai unka paisa currency circulation me ata hai..which is good for economy.

Haan ek nuksaan jarur hai,ki in latottaro ke chakkar me fal faroot ke daam dogune se jyada badh jate hain....ek-dedh hafte ke liye to atleast, gareeb aadmi ke liye kela tak kharidna sapna ban jata hai..

me to kehta hu, khoob vrat karo...swasthya ke liye bhi achcha.. ar desh ke liye bhi..

urmiladuhan;345537]I like to donate items for the temple on Janmashthami as I personally enjoy looking at the beautiful dresses and jewellery that adorn the deity statues. Keeping fast is not only beneficial for the body but also helps one keep positive thoughts. So I like to keep one. No 'dhakosla'! :)

I fully agree with the 'red, bold, highlighted and underlined' portion but with a caveat "why to link fast with any mythological character or a specific day". It can be observed any day. I am not against fast. I have myself observed fast twice in my life-time. The first one (for a half day) was observed by me when I was a school going boy, while emulating others in the neighbourhood and family. But, after a few hours, I felt a strong urge of having food. I said sorry to Shiva ji and broke the fast half-way. The second one was on a long-haul flight (about 7 /8 hours) which served nothing but food with beef which I do not savour at all. But, I would recommend others to observe fast, if they can. I myself cannot observe more than 4-5 hours.

In my humble opinion, linking with a mythological character (as you like to call it) helps with positivity.

My mother says that in villages, elders and other family members would make arrangement of fruits for the 'barti' (i.e., one who is fasting). So much support for th 'barti'!

This YouTube video that I shot some time ago shows stray dogs that have been served roti, malai (cream), and bura (ground sugar) at my home. Only one of the 2 seems keen on having it though!

My mother is one of my main sources of village culture as she was raised in village - she tells me that on Janmashthami fast day, girls and women would take it as a comparatively light work load day by spending time doing embroidery work together and listening/singing bhajans.
