V Ramakrishnan wins 2009 Chemistry Nobel

BARC and DRDO are not performing upto the mark, damn tru. Why only include these organizations why not ISRO which is doing somthing genuine not like the USA
"make it or fake it" (after Russia) this is what moon landing conspiracy theory is all bout. If anybdy havent seen the documentry please go through. Then nobody talked bout that the USA fake landing. Why???
i am not saying India is great in research but all this couldn't happen all of a sudden(Rome was not built in one day). It would take time as government is much aware now, commencing grants for science and tech and result of which IIT and IIScR has been started. and india could cope up with other counteries in research and tech in near future.

I don't know what to say about it actually...

Sorry to upset a few people but Indians celebrating a British's award is probably the most weird thing I ever saw :))

Oops my bad sid, I thought he is British...

Thats fine dude. You are right it is childish.
He is American ... so is Sunita Williams ... they are not Indian.
IF some ppl here want to continue with this pointless celebration then all Nobel Prizes have been won by Africans since thhats where humanity began.
SO, the moral of the story is ... stop being childish ..... stop this stupid badhai ho badhai.
Indians are more than capable of winning these awards in large numbers if given the opportunities for research - no need for chest thumping - its obnoxious.

Hindustan mein kaam karke koi Noble Priize jeete ga to kucch baat banegi
still it is better than nothing

I totally agree with Richa. So many of our engineering graduates do a project in their final semester- so many of them do come with original ideas but because of the sorry state of our institutions they go un-noticed !! Nothing is done to promote them. Not only the engineering graduates, even the school drop-outs are known to come out with great innovations!! I read somewhere the TATA’s went to France in concern with an automobile engine (developed by a family) that ran on hydrogen but the same thing was indeed made by a lad (an ordinary boy at his home) in some north-east state of India.
This should be an eye-opener, what they could have easily got at home they went overseas searching for it because no one knew about the boy’s innovation !! Who is to be blamed, the government of course. There is no dearth of talent in India.
Most of the indian engineering students are found to be searching an already done project , but some do come with original project , they are not noticed.

ohh i m elated beyond words to know that an Indian was accoladed like this along with three others how much merit this scientist has nd how commendable his accomplishments are !!!.

still its a long way to go!!!Lets not let education go inassimilable!!:)
nd plsss i m not criticising my country here i m jus trying to unearth some lacunae and wanting modifications.

I think we are blaming our education system too much. Every system has loop holes. Western system also has it's negative points. Hillary Ciliton accepted that technical education system is best in the world.
http://www.deccanherald.com/content/20426/indias-technical-education-world-hillary.html
U.S. president also want to reform their education system so that American able to compete with India and China.

We are too young in research field. The thing we are missing is the resources. Now government is also aware about these facts. New IITs and IISER are coming. It looks like a matter of time we will compete with west.

Sorry bro,
if the remark would be made by a person who is anyhow belong to research could hurt or upset. But at least now, it didn't upset me.
The nobel received by an indian makes me proud. He is an US citizen doesn't matter.
He has collaboration with MBU department at IISc and was a visiting lecturer here for some time.
And will be coming here near future somtime in dec/jan
Then It would bring more respect for Indian researchers/scientists in science community.
Collaborators/department will be having more funding . more over school going kids will be inspired by an indian born scientist's achievement .
And yes he is an Indian born scientist .

Hindustan mein kaam karke koi Noble Priize jeete ga to kucch baat banegi
still it is better than nothing

Dear Sir,
There could be several reasons/difficulties for not working in india.
There were scientist who worked in india "pioneer work bt" they went unnoticed to nobel committee like JC Bose(inverter of cohere or so called marconi's radio),then comes Satyender Nath bose father of bosons( 1924 published a paper and statistics called Bose Einstein stat.) and even after that scientist received nobel by working on bosons. then Meghnad Saha (who's ionization equation was published when he was just 25), latest is ECG sudarshan "not once twice" (1979 wen Abdus slam was awarded and in 2005 glauber )for his work in quantum electrodynamics who started Indian institute of mathematics in Chennai, also worked in IISc and TIFR now in US.
Then G N Ramachandran who deserved a Nobel for his work on bio-molecular structures in general and, more particularly, the triple helical structure of collagen and he also started MBU at IISc.

You could see how noble bobel prizes are being politicized. That could be a reason for scientists to move.

In case people did not know ..... Venkatraman is a U.S. citizen.

At least i know about the citizenships of all the people i wrote in my post except VS Naipaul which i told. I didn't write anything in that post bout citizenship or to say somthing bout Us or any other countery . I just wanted to make out that all the noble laureates there, except one, did their schooling from india. and education system is not worse here in India.
I didn't write all the indian nobel laureates Like Mothere terasa, Ronald Ross, Rudyard Kipling . then may be sombdy would have pointed out that they were not indian they just work in india :thappad

Rekha No I don't think people should be celebrating some achievement of someone who is not an Indian citizen so proudly.. Please note he is a US citizen, not there for a short time on some project or something.

I wonder if people in Kenya celebrate when Kenyan born marathon runners representing other countries win the race defeating Kenyan runners at Olympics and World championships...

For those wondering about Indian education standards, check the link

From the Nobel Laureate's mouth !!

Apparently, Venkatraman also despises these unsolicited congratulatory messages from Indians filling up his inbox.
So, lets not argue about this dumb desi practice of congratulating citizens of other countries for their accomplishments - because THEY DON'T WANT IT !!

Hahahaha !! Now, where are all the supporters of Indian blood ... badhaai ho ... blah blah blah .....

Here is the article from TOI reproduced here.

NEW DELHI: Nobel laureate Venkatraman Ramakrishnan has expressed disenchantment with people from India "bothering" him "clogging" up his email
box and dubbed as "strange" their sudden urge to reach out to him.

"All sorts of people from India have been writing to me, clogging up my email box. It takes me an hour or two to just remove their mails," he said.

He said the deluge of emails had buried important communications from colleagues or from journals concerning papers we have in press.

"Do these people have no consideration? It is OK to take pride in the event, but why bother me?" the 57-year-old Indian-American scientist wondered in an email interview to PTI.

"There are also people who have never bothered to be in touch with me for decades who suddenly feel the urge to connect. I find this strange," said Ramakrishnan, who shared this year's Nobel Prize for Chemistry with two others.

He expressed anguish over "all sorts of lies" published about him in a section of the media that he went to school and pre-Science in Chidambaram, the Tamil Nadu temple town where he was born in 1952.

"People I don't know, for example a Mr Govindrajan, claim that they were my teachers at Annamalai University which I never attended, since I left Chidambaram at the age of three," Ramakrishnan clarified.
