Am not sure if others have noticed a peculiar things about western festivities...most of them centre on "Individuals" than on the "Community".
For instance, Birthday celebrations in western style involves cake cutting, and than showering the person with gifts, that again means sense of “TAKING” -grabbing the material possessions in the garb of celebrations.

This is considered to be one of the most auspicious days in one’s life. On the other hand, birthday celebrations in truly Indian style are a low key affair and involved things like paying obeisance to God and “GIVING” away goodies to neediest- the destitute. See the paradox: One is about egoist approach whereas other one is about altruism.

Invariably, all Indian celebrations have an essential element of Yagna/Aahuti which not only helps in purifying the air but also bring a feeling of well being with alliance to some supreme being. On the other hand, western celebration involves flow of wine (Did I hear some one saying that am being fussy about wine- outdated view?) and definitely the auxiliary activities – I deliberately choose not to mention about those activities ;). Some so called modernist (I hate this word, because they dream of a monochrome world with no preservation of traditions, so eventually whole of this planet will behave the same, will consume and resume the so called materialist and modernist lives) are bound to pounce upon me, saying that we Indian pigs also wine, dine and gamble on Diwali, so how is it different? So my dear friends! The wining and gambling is not something that is preached traditionally by the scriptures as a way of celebration. But these bad habits have, over a period of time, got into our society!!! This is highly unlike the way wine is a kinda ritual in foreign parallels.

And yes now the so called Valentine Day: uh, the day to express love or to pacify your individualistic material desires!

Didn’t India have days to express love???..Yes it had! but again it talked about interaction between eligible bachelors and spinsters through media like Garba Ras etc under the blessings of elders. Unlike in Valentine Day, the wastage of tons of roses with absolutely no fault of theirs and making a century of indecent proposals a day.

I seem to have painted all western life style into a hollow stuff with no substance and care for community. NOooooo, I just chose some harsh words to drive home the point.

The crux is most of the modern festivities mainly centre on pacifying individualist and materialist needs first and then look for community. The Indian festivities centre on a brahma principle “ त्यक्तेन भुन्जिन्थः! ” whereas western things are primarily based on “ भुन्जिन्थः एकमेव आश्य:!!"

Agli post me kya goli maaroge ab !

Well, I agree. The crux which I understood till now is that such days and festivals must be observed if we are feeling like observing them genuinely, and in the manner which is socially acceptable and also appeals us !

Useless rituals must be thought about and courage must be shown to dare to keep them at hold and not keep them following them unnecessarily ! But, alongwith that it must also be kept in mind that the ugly show-off bug must be excused from biting us !

Valentine day ho ya koi bhi day.... man hai to manao..... nahi man hai mat manaao, par bas isliye bhi na manaao ki padosi kya kahega ki isne ye nahi kiya aaj ke din ya aaj ke din ye to karna jaruri hai ua isne usko wo diya to mai ye du! ohhhhh thak gayi !:p

Good point indeed!

Many indecent people find a hiding swathe on such occasions to come up with their veiled motives with a rosy, chocolate filled plaster of such occasions! And such are the people who make some fine concepts nothing more than a mockery and give a fair chance to feel repealed from such things.

Indian culture has always been centered on the giving approach. Its structure imbibes the virtues like perseverance, tolerance and the likes. Indian culture is so gigantic and varied that it can accept other cultures taking in their distinctive flavors and dipping them in Indian piousness !
