She was a very good statesperson and had a pretty good grasp of international relations. I think her exposure to the higher office during her formative days was reason for that.
She did some good things some great things and some worst things in her tenure. I think she was very well respected in the world community. Devaluation of rupee to withstand the international pressure, nationalization of banks and eliminating the privy-purse for Maharajas were some of her great works. Keeping the old guards in congress under check resulted in her getting a very strong hold on the congress that resulted in kind of dynasty rule that we talk about. But then all the politicians are guilty of that. Ch. Charan Singh brought Ch Ajit Singh, Ch. Devi Lal brought Mr. Om Prakash Chautala, Mr. Pilot’s son, Mr Mulayam’s son, Ch Bansilal, Mr. Bhajan Lal Mr. Sindia the list is far too long. So I would not blame Nehru-Gandhi family alone for that.
Some people say emergency was bad. Actually it was the way it was implemented and the purpose for which it was imposed. Otherwise for a normal person, it worked better than normal times. Things were done quickly and people were responsive. Some people misused it or over did it that brought her downfall.
The biggest damage that she did to the country was criminalization of politics. The mistry of murder of Mr. Lalit Narayan Mishra, and cover up of Lala Jagat Narayan’s case, bringing up Mr. Bhindrawale to check the influence of Mr. Zail Singh and Mr. Darbara Singh were her some of the biggest undoing. She also finished the second tier leadership within the congress party. While we are in a democracy, there is no democracy within the parties like congress, BSP, SP and Lok Dal of Mr. Chautala and whatever is the name of Ch Ajit Singh’s party. We need to groom the junior leadership within the political parties to the extent that these young leaders can take the center stage when time comes.

I am a naive when it comes to politics and related heavy stuff, yet! There are two things for sure that the good Mrs Gandhi did could not be summarized in one paragraph or even a thousands of them. The misdoings she did were no misdoings at all if one goes behind the scenes and observes what was the situation of the day.
Bindranwale for example, was not brought up to check Gyani Zail Singh, which seems to be the case on face, in fact it was Zail Singh, who as the home minister of Punjab let Bindranwale go out of prison without even a trial, when he was arrested for the murder of lala Jagat ram in Julndhar. Zail Singh was a die hard supporter of the Khalistan movement, behind the scenes. If one reads the proceedings of the Operation Blue Star (Of which you would have a classified information) he finds that Gyani visited the Golden temple the day after the big operation, and despite being the head of the armed forces of teh country he did not appreciate the Army to get terrorists out of the Holy place, rather pointed that the Army has made drill holes in the walls of the takhat. Another incidence was when he was fired upon in the temple, a major got himself killed to save the supreme commander, who in return asked army to leave him alone. This was gyani's nationhood.
The criminalization of politics was not her giving to the society rather Sanjay Gandhi's work under the influence of the office of the Prime Minister of the county, which was paid back by Mrs. Gandhi to not accept his widow as her daughter in law. She was SHREWD indeed... But when was politics meant for innocent people??
And on a lighter note... its said, a man in uniform is not allowed to discuss politics It seems to be an odd combination... No offenses granted!

Good to get your views on the subject. The questions are even if Mr. Zail Singh was the main culprit in getting Mr. Bhindrawale out, as the home minister, he was still part of the cabinet headed by Mrs. Gandhi. When in command if things go wrong, the commanding officer is the one where the buck stops. So, within the cabinet, it is the responsibility of the PM to with hold the faith of people and the land of law.
If Mr. Sanjay Gandhi did criminalization of the politics under the PM office, again then she needs to take that responsibility and blame. In any case, the Samastipur incident took place much before Mr. Sanjay Gandhi came into politics or limelight. If I remember correctly, at that time some thing was talked about Mr. Chandrashekhar and Mr. George Fernandez. I guess both of them were called as young Turks within the congress party and had a blessing of Mrs. Gandhi.
True, the politics is not for the innocent people. Actually innocent people are not suited for command for innocence is no excuse for not getting the work done. What I am trying to say, is that while she was a very good leader and did well as PM, she did brought a lot of filth into politics as well. The kind of support/ majority she had while being the PM, it was well within her capability to weed out the corruption from the public institutions. If she did not do it willingly, she is guilty of the act, and if she could not do it she is guilty of incompetence. So while we appreciate her rule for the good things she did, we also need to put the blame for the things, which she did not do or did wrong.
As far as uniform and politics are concerned, that is the myth. A good officer should be able to air his views, and if for some thing he feels very strongly, then even be prepared to resign his position. By the way some of the uniformed people have turned out to be better politicians and administrators.
Jokes are always good so far one does not hit below the belt. So don't worry. A word of caution to all of us, while joking, we must ensure that we do maintain the decorum of this forum.

Yes there is no doubt about it, she was great leader and much better then today's MMS and Advani's.
The same zeal and leadership qualities can be seen in Sonia Gandhi. But I know this view would create a lot of contorversies here.
Actually she is rulling our country indirectly then what is the fuss about ruling directly...may be this country can produce a Indira Gandhi again as IG was an inspiration for Sonia...
