Dear Dr. Sangwan,
Nice to read your intetest in bird life. Instead of adding more to the subject, I wish to tell that the weed water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is not a big problem and can easily be controlled with herbicides, without environmental contamination. It need some concerted efforts and mechanical methods like chaining/dragging are of no great help to check its manifestation. Even if we don't spend large sums on herbicides, there are biocontrol agents like water hyacinth weevil (Neochetina eichhorniae and Neochetina bruchi) which have been successfylly tried in many Indian lakes. A combination of both methods can provide effective control of water hyacinth and allow the best use of water bodies.
Good luck and best wishes
