Dear Friends,

I see wide spread decay of US economy. For the first time USA has imported heavy water from India and this shocked me.

One wonders what ails US economy ? USA seems to be loosing her edge not only in low tech items but in high technology also. Items in the export basket of USA are fast dwindling. Is it politics at the root cause of problems or something more deeper ?

In my opinion, it's a very complex problem. The US government wants to protect its workers rights by making corporations pay them a minimum wage. This minimum wage is around 7 dollars/hour. Convert that in Rupees and we get around 350 Rs/hour. That's a lot to pay for say, a technician to work on your car. US, being a capitalistic economy, wants to find the cheapest way to get something done, extracting highest profits. With globalization setting in, these corporations no longer have to stay within the boundaries of the country. You can find the same work in other parts of the world, for 1/5th the cost.

Results are clearly seen, where China has taken most of the blue collar jobs from the US and other countries including India are now in the process of taking the white collar jobs.

In my opinion US is a smart country and I suspect US is more interested in technical aspect of heavy water developed by India.

One cant really say that an economy is decaying because it has become a net importer of something it exported before....India also became a net importer of wheat....

Economies are cyclical....US is in the slowing down phase from high of real estate leveraged consumption and its problem is interest rates....just like india's problem is inflation at present...

There is nothing wrong with the US economy, atleast from what I read in the article.

Thats the way the US economy works. Best man for the job. I can pull up a list of several heavy-water suppliers within the US who could have filled this order. But, the private NJ based company that is importing the heavy water must have done it-s cost-benefit analysis of the deal.

Do not forget that most of nuclear fuel in the US isnt made here. It is imported from Australia.

Just because a lot of jobs are being shipped overseas, doesnt mean that the US doesnt have enough people qualified to fill those jobs.

We as Indians have a lot to learn from the US economy. Nationalism and economy do not go hand in hand.

On a sour note, the US economy is under threat from government regulations and socialist legislators that threaten to trim its efficiency and productivity. All this hublabloo of jobs being shipped and illegals taking up jobs are in part due to government regulations. But, instead of acknowledging its failures, the socialist politicians are blaming the greedy-corporations for whats happening.

what is Ailing USA

Dear R Kumar ji
you are right American Economy is ailing. One of the main stay of American Economy is Weapon Industry. Moti baat ya sai----

Ek kumahar kai do chhori thee. Donu Bayah thaya dee. Ek saal hogaya tai kumahar kee ghar alee nai kahaya uk jakai chhorian ka bera to liya. Kumahar badalee chhori kai gaya. Hal chal boojhaya. Matkkey bana rakhey they. Boli Babu jai barsat hogi to margey na tai jee jayangey. Babu bolya barsat na ho. Chhoti Chhori kai pahunchaya. Hal Chal boojhaya. Beti boli babu ek kila dharti sai fasal bo rakhi sai jai barsat hogi to bachjayangey arr natai margey. Babu Bolya- beti barsat hovaigee. Ghar nai ulta aagya. Gharaalee boli ke haal betiyan ka? Kumahar Bolya -EK MARAN MAI SAI . So to me it appears that either the developing countries will survive or America will survive. Both cannot. Time and struggle of people will decide which way the things will take turn.

Where do you get someone to fix your car at 7 dollars an hour? :)

From what I know car mechanics here in the US charge an average of 65 dollars an hour for labor. My car needs new struts and a passenger side control arm. It will cost me 1500 dollars including labor. I dont have that kind of money to spare for now so I am letting my car bite the dust till I fix my finances. I know that in India mechanics charge just for the spare parts and a nominal labor fee. So, you are right things could be done much cheaply elsewhere in the world.

The reason manual labor has gotten so expensive in the US is because people have been maknig hefty packages for the last 60 years and they consider it beneath their comfort level to do much of their own work that involves physical labor. But someone has to do the work. There comes the exorbitantly expensive physical labor that sometimes makes even more than white collar employees.

I am waiting to move my car to California where I can get it fixed by some cheap Mexican laborers.

What is ailing USA

In the present scenario,Capitalism cannot provide a decent living to everyone, but as long as it guarantees significant layers of the population a reasonable standard of living it can maintain a degree of social stability. Recent figures on the situation in the USA show that “middle America” is beginning to feel the pinch, a phenomenon which indicates that social turmoil will soon be on the agenda.

What's the matter, can't get any illegal cuban immigrants to fix it for you? They will most likely charge you ~ 7-8 bucks man! :)
