Obamamania to Obamaphobia"

Bhai ye socho Obama jo kaarega woh sabse pehle US ke liye kaarega even he will try that other economy will not boost.
Althogh US economy boost might have some good impact on other economies but still isn't bad to expect him to do some thing for us(India).

Nice topic. India is being affected because it is an integral part of the globalised economy. Lots of our high growth industries like IT, BPO, KPO, etc. are totally correlated to western economies. And western economy is in deep sh*t. The main reason is that their economies over the last couple of decades were based on borrow and spend model. These economies have a huge national debt and households also have a lot of debt.

Saara paisa gaya kahan?
Thing to understand here is paper wealth. If you buy a share at 100, and it goes to 1000. That is paper wealth. Only a few people are selling and buying at 1000. The rest of the people owning the share are thinking its value is 1000. Now if all of them try and sell it at once, they won't get 1000 obviously. The price would come down and hence all of them would lose money. This is wealth destruction. And it is also true for currencies. So even those who sold it at 1000 and got 1000 rupees are holding it in rupees. If rupee's value goes down tomorrow (comparatively speaking if you compare it to dollar or EURO, or absolutely speaking if you think about what you can buy with 1000 rupees), you are still losing money.

When will it end?
No one thinks this year. The most optimist scenario sees recovery from next year. The worst scenario look at a several year long recession.

I used to be very active in such threads a little while ago. Then I got busy and stopped keeping track of what was going on in the market.

A few years ago, I came in touch with the Austrian School of Economics. It is a school of thought just like the Keynesian School of thought upon which the Western economies including the US economy were based up until the recent financial collapse.

The cornerstone of the Austrian School of economics is thatmoney cannot be created out of thin air. What has happened is that the US government has mismanaged its money supply to the extent that they have distroyed the intrinsic value of the dollar i.e. the real value of goods and services that the dollar stands for.

I warned about an impending financial collapse over a couple of yearts ago. You can see that in my previous threads and posts. Markets always fall into equilibrium. That means markets will eventually punish all bad behavior and reward good behavior. Right now the markets are punishing a lot of bad behavior on the part of the governments and unscrupulous investors who badly hedged their bets in the markets.

On the question of how deep is the hole, the answer is in the question how much bad behavior in the market is up for punishment. Markets will keep tumbling till all such bad behavior has been punished. This may include the ultimate collapse of the dollar because of the way it has been managed. Along with the collapse of the dollar will come the collapse of all the economies that have their own currencies and economies tightly tied to the dollar.

A collapse of the dollar may be avoided if the US government puts a leash on the way it is handling the crisis. They need to bow to the power of the markets which is nothing but the aggregate opinion of everyday people like you and me who form the market.

The power of the people decide the course of the market is beyond anything that the government can do with market interventions and economic stimulus.'

Should people be afraid? Yes, if they are too tightly tied to the current market situaiton. No, if they have nothing to do with the markets and were smart enough to have not kept all their eggs in one basket. People need to start saving more and more of their cash reserves in Gold. Its value has never been zero and has been the savior of the intrinsic value of wealth for thousnads of years now.

Which companies will grow? The companies that have figured out how to cater to the demands coming out of the current economics scenario will do really well. Currently some of the best to do companies in the US are Gun manufacturers and private security firms. You can guess why they are doing well.

The money that we thought was there was nothing but a phantom. The money never existed in the first place. And, money that never existed in the first place could not have been lost. People were placing bets on margins i.e. bet on a 100 dollar commodity by putting as little as one dollar out of their own pocket and reaping benefits as if though they had actually invested 100 dollars. The market treated this bet as actual 100 dollars invested even thought it was only one dollar invested in reality. The banks lent money as if the investor was investing 100 dollars through their channels. Once the bets went bad, the margins call became due. People could not come up with the extra 99 dollars. Banks went-uh oh! and stopped lending. Companies' stocks started crashing. They started laying off people. These people could not pay their mortgages. The banks got hit in the sack again. People started running on the banks. Banks closed thier doors. Government started printing more money to pay off banks' account holders, failing businesses and whatever was left, Bush and Obama personally got into a helichipter and threw it on people who never deserved any help in the first place. And boom! here we are at this point in History.

Where we go from now is purely dependent upon how our govenrments treat the current crisis. Keynesians solutions might get us short-term reprieve. But they will only delay the eventual outcome, i.e. the markets reaching an equilibrium.

knew it that our sumit bhai would have the most appropriate answer for us when the topic is about "Economy"

as an individual even i think that markets will reach equilibrium in the longer run and such a recession also hit the world in 30's (my father shared this with me couple of months back), and it i believed from a long time that this is not actual money and the inflation is only artificial, recalling the time when we were discussing the share markets on a all time high here. thanking sumit here for making the theory more understandable by presenting the reasons in detail, i hope sumit's information and advices can do a lot of good things for all of us here, keep contributing BRO !!

Sumit, really excellent post.

The governments have thrown the kitchen sink at the economy right now. Only a retrospective analysis in future may be able to tell what was right and what was wrong. I can understand your sentiment and share it in large parts. But I'll play devil's advocate. We might be in a great depression/deflation scenario. As Keynes explained, when the economies are spiralling down, the classical economics fails. People try to save more, hence consumption goes down which means demand goes down. As demand goes down, production has to come down and people are fired. Unemployment increases. As per classical theory, the interest rates, wages and prices would come down to create investment, hiring and demand respectively. But Keynes showed that in a deep recession, this doesn't work. The wages are sticky and very difficult to bring down. And business don't invest as they see no potential for growth and future profits. With no investment, there is no growth. So people are saving more but that saving is not going to investment. With no investment and increasing unemployment, incomes decrease. As you earn less, what you can save from it also decreases. But since everyone is scared, they try to save more, leading to even lower consumption, lower demand and more unemployment. In short, the economy goes into a vicious circle. So Keynes' argument was that the govt. has to spend more at such a time and invest in the economy, creating more jobs and hence the demand. He was an ardent capitalist and his view was that govt. should increase deficit spending only during recession and shrink its role in the economy during boom time (to balance the budget and to avoid crowding out of private investment). In principle, I think it was a fair analysis. Hayek, who was the father of Austrian school of economics wrote a very good critique against Keynesian solution, which was acknowledged by Keynes himself.

Keynes understood and intended it to be a short term solution, he even said that "In the long run, we are all dead". It is supposed to be a stimulus to be withdrawn as soon as the economy recovers. Otherwise there is a danger of economy spiralling down. Of course, the danger is that the govt. is not able to rein in the spending during good times (as was the case in UK and US and most of the world).

What is happening now is truly historical. With govts. giving extreme monetary and fiscal stimulus. Only time would tell what the result would be. But doing nothing and leaving everything to the market may have been really dangerous.

PS: By the way, the markets react in strange ways too. Logically, dollar should be going for a toss. But it has made huge gains against most world currencies since the crisis started because of its "safe haven" status.

Not for long mate !!!

6 months down the line , I can imagine d olalr going back to that 42-43 INR level , though I am not hedging myself , coz I dont want to start trading and don't have a lot of bank balance(dollars) to convert into Eur or INR! :D

Sumit has written a good a post , but I doubt leaving the markets to their own would have been a sane idea! It could have caused more destruction of sorts!
As Kapil said , govt's balance sheet needs be put to work! Its a case of Deleveraging and in that scenario , asset destruction takes place! There was excess of leverage and that will be removed! :)

One thing that we all agree is that it is very historical , do not expect to be normal anytime soon , what will happen is that we will shift to the new normal , and what's the new normal ?
8-10% unemployment in US coupled with huge fiscal deficits will be the new normal! :) gone are the days when u will s ee payroll figures of 3-4 %!
In a sense the "potential" of economy will be reduced! New full capacity will be lesser than what we were having before the crisis!

Yes , times are real scary! You really do not know what is the destination , it can be a disaster as well!

No , insecurity reduces the capacity of individuals ! so companies must try and comfort their employees!

answered in above quesn!

if we are talking about India , we should start seeing things improve by end of year !
IBM to outsource jobs to India was creating uproar in US ! Kapil , any take on that ? ;) 5k jobs outsourced to India when they are recieving stimulus from US govt , pretty tricky , right ?

Excess leverage and de-regulation! Basically no single thing/person/ institution can be singled out ! To rightly put it : It's a crisis not in the system , it's a crisis "OF" the system!

And on a lighter note , at least main nahi hun :o I joined job in financial sector in Dec 07 and by that time crisis was already there , is Kapil ko pakdo , he is a CDO trader , naash thaa raakha tha in CDOs ne :D :p

Kapil has answered that !

Kapil has answered that !

Obamamania to Obamaphobia"

Obama kya koi bhi aa leta , would not have mattered , govt as discussed in all the posts , is a major player in market these days , but still the crisis will and is bound to take long to be back to good times again !!

I wanted to answer this post of yours , tried but then got busy and lost what I wrote , let me do it again , answers inline!

Everyone has explained really well...i appreciate all of you to provide explaination in such a beautiful way...

As i can see from here in europe....lot of big giants (comapnies) trying to do cost cutting....and hw they are going to succeed in that..is ...they have to send work to the countries where they can get the cheap labour compare to other countries...like INDIA, China, Polland, Czech Republic and may be some more.....

But till now this recession is widely seen in UK, US and in european countries...It has also hit the indian market but there are very fair chances to see the improvement in the coming months..atleast for India

So from this point of view ...we can expect that the Indian market may come out from the state it is now....can be three months...or within this year...

Lets hope for the best!

Our biggest problem is becoming our biggest streangth i.e. POPULATION

Someone said that main market of world now is Dubai and people who are supplying money to terrorists invested their money their in good times and as their amount increased they withdraw it.
is it so?

What type of business is coming to India? Software, Garments, Automobile, FMCG, Reality which sector is going to get biggest share?

"Market" in Indian context

.

Ohhh I was talking about only for the IT market only if i have missed out in my previous post.

For IT growth where the business is going to increase at a very fast pace in the coming months then well Dubai is not at all in the list.

Type of business coming to India is IT which i was talking about...as the updated news says...Polland also made a cap over the growth as they are gettiing budget support from the Pollish government, so not much jobs will be moved to Polland. Now only India, China and Russia will be in the list where most of the IT projects will be moved to cut down the Cost. Czech Republic may be or may not be......
