What leads to success luck or hard work?

I have been thinking about this question since a long time. How much percentage luck and how much percentage hard work play in our life success? I am sure that at any point of your life, you would have looked at a person and said "How lucky He/She is. I wish I was like him/her.

For me both are required to get success in any field otherwise people who are doing lot of hard work reached on top of every govt. or industry but they are fighting for their bread not even butter. But most of us feel that every achievement is due to our hard work and every failure is due to bed luck. I believe in god and luck first and the hard work on 2nd point. Its my opinion so no offenses.

It is nothing more than the marriage of preparation with opportunity." As we see, Preparation plays a vital important role in life success. When opportunity comes to a person who is prepared, he can take the opportunity. So if the luck knocks an unprepared mind, there is a high probability that he missed the opportunity and hence misses his luck

success is a mix of hardwork (add some smart work if possible) and luck.
Also the ratio varies from person to person and there cant be any pattern or formula derived for this.
Only thing we can do is to increase the probability of success by continously improving on hardwork so that whenever luck helps, we are prepared with hardwork.
The worst regret in life could be the feeling that I got a chance by luck but was not prepared to grab it. I wish we all could avoid this situation.

I firmly believe that hard work is the key for success. Luck can play vital role sometimes and can delay success to come your way but hard work (or I must say smart and hard work) can replace any good or bad luck. One may have to wait for sometime but will surely get success sooner or later.
Continuity is also equally important thing which one must stick with to taste success.

Having said all this, I saw somewhere in my school "If 60% means success then Success = 30% Luck + 70% Hard Work". Hence, by this formula success is just double of the max luck you can have but one can also see its within the range of Hard work component.
Nevertheless, I do not believe much in such formulas and theories.
I believe, put your max possible and whatever you get in return is success. Failure with lot of learning also is a success for me.

Life is not all about the chances we get but its all about choices we make. You can do all the hard work but a bad decision can spoil all of it. On the other hand, when you are out of luck, a good decision can change the world for you.

Our decision making abilities ( i.e. The Choices ) plays major role in our success as well as failures rather than hard work and luck.

Vijay,

Although, you said all correct but there are lot of other components as well on which success depends. Not to offend but you veered off the topic. It's abt how important are Hard Work and Luck in success.
So, lets stick to Hardwork and Luck at the moment.

Well, Luck and Hard work are useless if we don't take good decisions.

Anyways, i am not into debate .... you guys carry on.

dont think any further. here is the answer >>> hard work pays nothing, unless it is coupled with "smart work"... success, then is bound to follow. also, rightly said by vijay above.

i hope the following 2 posts will help you in settling your quest for success. want to learn on more enlightened views, pls go through entire thread... hope it helps.

If every thing depends on choises we make then who bring these choises to us.With no work and no luck what will we decide on......wat if someone took a right decision about something but dint worked for it and neither luck followed then how can decisions help him?

When I was a kid and sometimes when used to fight my bro I used to revert back to what he said and then ki mujhe argument nahi karna. Uske baad wo kuch kehta aur fir mein kuch teer chodta aur fir kehta ki mujhe argument nahi karna.

Fir kuch time baad socha ki agar mujhe sahi mein argument nahi karna tha toh shuru se hi chup rehna tha ... koi pataka chodd kar ye nahi kehna tha ki mein toh bass out of this behes :) ... waise mein aaj bhi waisa hi hoon :D
How sweet was bachpan :)

What about the guys who won more than $54 million in lotto. They got success not only for them but for their kids as well. The only hard work they did is went to the shop and spend 10 minutes to choose the numbers.

:D

That's where you need to understand what success is. Merely big bank balance is not success. Also, the definition of success depends person to person. Still I suggest, do some research on the term and can also refer thread "Success and Failure", if wish to.

I cant do research - too dumb. Could you explain what success is. But i would take big bank balance anyday and leave success for u :D

You decided to do something ( that's your choice ) but then don't want to do hard work ( again your choice i.e. not to do hard work ). End of the day, its your CHOICE to do some hard work or not. Isn't it ?

If you decide to do something ( by making a choice ) and start working hard ( again your choice ) then there are more probablities of luck following you. Then again, success depends how smartly you make your choices when luck knocks at your doorstep. Either you can waste the opportunity by taking a bad decision or you can harvest the benefits by making a smart decision.

I think making choices and taking right decision at right time fills the gap between the luck and hard work in many ways, lets take few factor involved in success(no definition here, mere perception) of an individual.
1) Hard work and smart work (already stated by OP and other replies)
2) Luck (already stated by OP and other replies)
3) Talent, now this is very tightly coupled with CHOICES we make, as suggested by vijay in his post, the decision we make define our life more then other things.

People choosing careers out of their interest/talent areas due to peer pressure, family problems, lack of confidence find hard work and luck both eluded more then usual. With each corner in your life, career, love, principles, people choose their lifes, some of them regret, some of them celebrate. I don't think its necessary to give example of RAM or SHYAM here where both were budding guitarists, RAM went for music and SHYAM for MBA and where story end with defining success as not huge pay cheques, bank balance, cars but the happiness people drive in work they do.
So, Yes, hard work, smart work, luck all are ingredients for success, but without right choices, this success will be as tasteless as feekki rabri!!

You have to go in a for certain choice/goal first, for which you will work hard. If choice is not wise, hard work may not bring handsome dividends. So choice comes first, then hard work and then luck which is a synonym of chance. Chance assumes secondary role whereas right choice and hard work come first. So, human ingenuity, coupled with right choice and sincere efforts bring desired results.

hardwork and luck both have importance in achiveing success. hardwork never goes in vain if done with right direction. it's pay you in whatever field you are.even without hardwork only luck will not help you unless and untill you will try for something with hardwork.
