Assuming you have got the job because you have required skills for the job offered, then it should be politics as it teaches you survival of the fittest and rest other options hardly get any attention or recognition;)

You are absolutely right that"Assuming you have got the job because you have required skills for the job offered".But I think that at the time of interview, in merely 2~3 hours nobody can judge your all skills completely which sometimes results in unsatisfactory job profile or unsatisfied work of employees.
Most of the times , its the merely an interviewer of which nature and judgement level alongwith the attitude towards the candidate level for the purposed candidature, describes the conditions and situations to be faced by the employee or the boss in future which in turn effects the stability.

I feels that a big doubt is there, whether technical skills set dominates other factors like politics, personallity etc or other factors dominates the tech skills sets in private sector jobs??

By assuming i didn't mean ASSUME ONE HAS REQUIRED SKILLS for the job....i meant that the employee has the job because he HAD THE SKILLS....i am not talking about testing the skills before the job was offered:)

Apart from skills...rest aspects depend from company to company and its case specific. All bosses don't like buttering/ You cant be political/manipulative everywhere and with everyone. Honesty doesn't pay ALWAYS and same goes for HARD WORK. So you just need to be well aware what is required when and where and How much and how to apply.

do not know about whole private sector but my take is varied

MNC & large enterprises - Buttering & then politics
SME's - politics, buttering & skill set
soho's - skill & hardwork

But as i have seen and discussed with a lot of friends, that in middle level industries and in MNC,Politics is key skill and then smart work (Not hard work).
Tech skills issue is very small as it develops with time in everybody and problems related to tech skillswhich makes ur working enviorment uneasy are nearabout 5-10 %

According to my understanding, there is nobody in the world which don't likes buttering (Although extent or level of buttering may vary from 1% to 100%)

Accountability and reason that in sohio's and sme's there is more of a direct supervision by the management/owner though u r correct that everyone likes buttering but nothing is more desirable than money :), just an opinion though as i quit my job some seven years back, loking for one now, though :P

But its logical to say that politics can be played very easily in all conditions & level and accountability can also be due to Smart politics, not due to ur hard work or dedication.....

Sateynder Bhai,,,,,,Its the Happy Mixture of all those Qualities which you have mentioned in your first post is required for the stability not only in Private Jobs rather in every job.

All the mentioned qualities are important and difficult to ignore any of them,,,,,,,,,,

Bhai ye to maine bata diyaa hai Practical answer,,,,,,baaki kahne ke liye we can say anything:rock

Dusri ek aur baat hai.....Luck Plays a major role,,,,,though people may disagree with me on this aspect......yahaan main Virender Narwal bhai ki mention ki hui ek kahaawat kahunga,,,,,,,,"Jab kharaab time aave to Oont(Camel) pe baithe hod ne bhi Kutta(Dog)** paad liyaa karre",,** Kutiyaa also sorry for being gender biased:D

"Survival of fittest"
You need to be the master of area you are working on. If it is mixed with little politeness(here i lack) then the combination simply rocks.Buttering gives you only small time stability, Every time you have to prove your metal and if you are lacking in knowledge of your filed you are simply useless. Politics is the worst part in almost every company so more you involve in it more you are lagging behind. Every second person have different mentality. First understand your job then understand your boss, what he wants buttering or work? If he is weak in his field then he likes buttering only. If he is master of his field he will see your work first and then your behaviour with your subordinates and seniors. Such boss is a treasure of knowledge grab as much as you can from him.

Sachin Bhai,

Luck plays a major role but only in case of 5-10% people.
Secondly, though all qualities are important and anyone of them can not be ignored, but my question was related to the maximum weightage to a quality..

and secondly..Aapko gender biased ka jawaab dena padega jab KAI BHAI aapko katghaerey main khada larengey ab....;)

I have found some good stuff for Job management..

1. Plan your week on Sunday night
Look at your work calendar and plan your week on Sunday night or Monday morning. This would include important meetings, deliverables, a brief summary of things that are pending from last week and any tasks to be achieved during the week. Though this might look like a time management tip, at the end of the week, on Friday night when you re-visit what you have achieved over the last five days, the satisfaction is immense.

2. Undertake activities that you are passionate about even though it might not be in your job profile

Start an initiative that you would love to do irrespective of whether it is required for you to do or not.

3. Do not indulge in the blame game

If something goes wrong do not blame others blindly. If you commit a mistake, do not hesitate to accept it. As Gauthama Buddha said, there are three things we can't hide for long: the sun, earth and the truth. Accepting your mistake gracefully will only make you look like a true professional and also give you the satisfaction of not cheating.

4. Communicate more often in person
Utilise all the opportunities where you can speak to an individual in person rather than e-mail or phone. But be aware of the other person's time and availability. Listening to a positive answer from a person will give you more happiness than if it is done over the phone or via e-mail.

5. Know what is happening at your workplace
Will this make a person happy? Truly, yes! Imagine a cricket team that doesn't know how many runs to score to win a match? More than losing the game, the player will never be interested or motivated to play well.

Attend all meetings that are addressed by the CEO to your immediate manager to know what is going to happen around you. It could be the company's growth plan or your department's next big project. Jack Welch mentions in his book Winning "every employee, not just the senior people, should know how a company is doing."
You will also get an extra edge if you are in a position to answer queries raised by your peers or juniors. This is not just for the good reasons, but bad reasons as well. You do not want to be the last employee to know if your company is laying off employees (in the worst case, if you are the one who is on that list).
6. Participate in organisation- level activities
This could be as simple as spending one weekend for a corporate social responsibility activity or attending a recruitment drive to help your HR team or arranging a technical/sports event at the organisational level. Most of these events will be successful as people do come on their own to contribute.

7. Have a hobby that keeps you busy and happy
Many people say their hobby is watching TV or listening to music or reading the newspaper. These aren't hobbies, they are just ways of passing the time. Some hobbies are evergreen and will keep you evergreen as well: dancing, painting, writing short stories, poems, blogs and sharing your experiences.

8. Take up a sport
While choosing a sport make sure that there is physical activity. There is the danger of becoming addicted to sports where there is less physical activity (like computer games, chess, cards etc). Physical activity keeps a person healthy and happy. If you pick up one sport well, you can represent your organisation in corporate sports event too.

9. Keep yourself away from office politics
Politics, as a practice, whatever its profession, has always been the systematic organization of hatreds. -- Henry Brooks Adams

Politics is everywhere and the office is no exception. Playing politics might be beneficial but only for the short term. So the best thing to do is play fair.
10. Wish and smile
More often than not, there are fair chances that the other person will smile back. This could be your security guard at the gate, your receptionist, your office boy, your CEO or your manager -- never forget to wish them and smile.

11. Volunteer for some activity
"The value of a man resides in what he gives and not in what he is capable of receiving." Albert Einstein
Do at least one activity without expecting anything in return. There is no set frequency for this. This could be once in a day or once in a week or thrice in a week. It could be as simple as making tea at the office for your colleague, helping a colleague who is working in another department by using your skills, dropping your colleague at his door step in your car, going to your manager or colleague to ask if there is any help you can extend, contributing to technical or knowledge management communities in your organisation etc.

nice tips deswal saab .. though these things will no doubt help us to climb the ladder but given the above options only, i still believe that if u good at ur technical skills required then it can provide stability if not fast growth because at the end of the day what matters is ur deliverables and no company will ever want to loose good resources at any cost unless its completely going to close down its business.

aur ye dedication to company vala option tho aaaj ke time me aur vho
bhi private sector me lagu hi nahi hota what ever the type of company is ... and thats what the voting indicates too ..its better to replace it with some other option its ZERO % :)

Don't THINK too much about the future. The rest will happen.:)

Agreed , thats certainly a way of approaching things !

Do your best and do not think about it , because you cannot do any better! :)

However let me just do a small critical analysis of the options provided:

Politics:

Well there are people who have become MDs and others say just because of nice politics , so I wont deny its importance ! But then this is for moving on in company rather than stability , its an extra condition not necessary one!

Job Related Technical knowledge:

Well if you do not have them , sooner or later you will be caught and made redundant , so this is necessary ! Sure it is not sufficient!

Buttering of boss:

I do not have experience of how things works in India but here sitting in a top professional environment , certainly do not think buttering is needed , do your work and you can even argue with your bosses if you are strong enough and can support your arguements. Might be this will not work when in front of the CEO or someone very higher but cer tainly you can talk easily to your manager. I am privileged to have good managers ( I havea lot of them , 4-5 to be precise :p ) I have seen people who only believe in just pleasing their bosses , well that's an objective function which is good but then no "good" boss will be happy unless you do some good work for him/her! I prefer to make him happy workwise and not the other way!

Dedication to your company

Dedication to work is an better option i guess. There is a saying that love your work and not company becasue company might make you redundant some day ! So it goes this way ! I find satisfaction in doing my work to perfection at times ( Maslow's top levels ;) )

Honest working

Thats kind of included in the dedication to work , so I skip this one!

Personally I have always worked only if something interests me and/or challeneges me to the core ( else I am the most lazy one around ), that has been a very successful mantra so far in life , I understand some people have to work with other constraints as well ! So i would say for them that it is all in the objective function , make sure you define your objective function well and then critically analyse how you can optimise your objective function with the constraint you have!
:)
Its an Optimisation problem mostly !:) ( I can hear some of you saying that it is typical of a Mathematician ;) ) !
