It depends upon the position of an individual.

Worker - Hard work only
Supervisor - Hardwork + Technical Know how
Manager - Technical know how + Buttering + Politics
Gen. Manager - Politics + Conceptual skills
CEO - Conceptual skills only

i think if you are technically strong in whatever you do then your boss will surely consider you as vital resource.
it will help you in smoothly do you job.

I have seen a plenty of cases when technically strong people are not able to do smooth work due to Politics only.May be many of us will have such examples around us...;)
