Why Gujarat prefers the BJP and Modi

Another thread on Modi and his PM candidature, no? This thread is meant to show/discuss the so-called Gujarat model beyond business and throw light on as to why Gujarat votes Modi back to power time and again. Some of this you might know, but some will surely be an eye opener and this thread has nothing to do with congress so do not compare or bring it in

This thread is to discuss Gujarat, Modi and his style of politics.

Here are some things you need to know about the Gujarat elections.

1. The Congress has not won a majority in Gujarat since the Babri Masjid was taken down by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) warriors. This is the single most revealing, most important fact of this election. The Ram Janmabhoomi movement was the event that transformed politics in the state. Gujaratis subscribe to the BJP’s anti-Muslim message in full. Those killed by Muslims at Godhra were ordinary Gujaratis returning from kar seva in Ayodhya. Gujarati voters anticipated such a party as the BJP, which would reflect their distilled sentiment. Those who call Gujarat the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS’) “laboratory for Hindutva” don’t understand who the science teacher is here and who the student.

2. To ascribe to his greatness, genius, charisma and ability, chief minister Narendra Modi’s electoral success is to not know that immediately before him were other BJP geniuses, none of whom lost an election either and all of whom sat on majorities. Anybody remember Suresh Mehta? What about Dilip Parikh? Four chief ministers came and went before Modi, removed not by the Gujarati voter, but by internal politics. Through all of their leaders’ mischief against one another, breaking and remaking the party, BJP ideology found solid support from Gujaratis because Gujarat is a BJP-minded state. Modi has triumphed because he stilettoed his internal competition, BJP men who built the party in the state. Kashiram Rana won six Lok Sabha terms from Surat and never lost an election but was not given a ticket by Modi.

3. Modi sits on top of an anti-Muslim consensus. His popularity flows from this. A quick demonstration: There’s no need to go further than observing the vocabulary employed. The most common phrase is “Dekho dekho kaun aaya. Gujarat ka sher aaya!” (Look who has come. It’s Gujarat’s lion). Why the macho imagery? The truth is that he is the lion of Gujarat because the state stood aside while violence was done to Muslim Gujaratis.
The second name for Modi is Chhote Sardar (I am certain he seethes at “chhote”). This is charged with the same sentiment because Gujaratis believe, wrongly, that Vallabhbhai was against Muslims.
Those who think Modi is popular because he has brought great economic change to Gujarat know little about Gujarat and nothing about Gujaratis.
Modi the greatest man since Gandhi? I accept that. Modi the saviour of the Indian nation? Accepted. Modi the sexiest man since Dharmendra? Accepted. Modi the greatest economist since Milton Friedman? Accepted.
But Modi is still popular for showing Muslims their place.

4. Your minister for women and child development is in jail for murdering women and children. Your minister for home is forbidden from returning home because he might influence the police. Your anti-terrorism chief is in jail for murder and blackmail. Does this bother Gujaratis? Not really, and this will not be an issue in the elections. In no other state of India is this possible. Being exposed so thoroughly would have meant shame and flight for Modi in another state. Here, it is a demonstration of his credentials.

5. This is why Modi fights the election against the demonstrably secular Rahul and Sonia Gandhi. Secular is a bad word in Gujarat (no, really. In Gujarat, “secular” means “pro-minority” and “anti-Hindu”).

6. Gujarat has India’s highest per capita consumption of Aastha channel and CNBC-TV18. A deeply devout state that is deeply immersed in making money.

7. The Congress chased away Patels from their party. Who gave up their ancestral lands for the Congress? Patels. It was Patel sacrifice that made satyagraha successful in Bardoli and in their fatherland in Kheda and Charotar. The British did not play with the law like Indians do and those Patels who didn’t pay tax at Vallabhbhai’s calling lost their lands forever. But they did it because the Congress stood with them. Why have they gone away now?

8. Deliberately for the last 30 years, the Congress pursued the village competitors of the Patels, the Kshatriyas. The BJP is the party of the Patels (four of Modi’s nine cabinet ministers are Patels). The Congress is the party of the Kshatriyas. Congress chief Arjun Modhwadia is Kshatriya, before him Bharatsinh Solanki was Kshatriya and his father Madhavsinh. In the Union government, the big Gujarati leader Shankersinh Vaghela is Kshatriya. The Congress must try and bring the Patels, especially my fellow Leuva Patidars, back.

9. The caste mathematics favours the BJP. The Congress alliance, called Kham (Kshatriya + Harijan + Adivasi + Muslim), is frayed. Many Harijans and Adivasis are attracted to Hindutva because it is inclusive. Unless the Congress introduces new thinking it is guaranteed to lose.

10. Gandhi did not do what Gandhi would have done. Mohandas would have gone on a fast in the centre of the city and shamed it into stopping its violence. Sonia was and remains passive for the following reasons. First, all of these things we have seen, she already knows. Politicians understand electorates better than the media. There’s no point fighting your voter. Second, she is vulnerable because we hate her for being foreign and Christian. She is lonely. She took the approach of pragmatism, where principle was required. It is shameful that an RSS man, Shankersinh Vaghela, was made the biggest Congress leader in Gujarat.

And a lot of these classifications are visible in behaviors of Modi supporters on JL too.

Modi supporters, I would appreciate if you read and quote your objections instead of wasting your spit or one sided rhetorical debates

The article does not answer the problem but just gives examples of other state in India and states in US and how they ALSO vote on communal basis.

Here is a deeper look on Gujarat, about 91.1% of the population of Gujarat are Hindu. Muslims account for 7.1%, Jains 1.0%, Sikhs 0.1%, and Christians 0.5% and I this only re-asserts Aakar's point of view or you believe it is only a co-incidence that BJP has not lost a election since Babri Masjid?

Further, the article gives a lot of other examples such as Modi's kniveness of removing anyone against him, even if they were winning elections, him promoting communal leaders like Amit Shah, Maya Kodnani which nowhere rebutted.

I think it is always good to give a link and the source. Anyway, this piece by Anand Ranganathan in Newslaundry gives a very good rebuttal for such line of reasoning that brands the whole state as communal. http://www.newslaundry.com/2013/07/whos-the-real-fascist/

The link I posted is a very non-partisan link and talks about the ridiculous-ness in calling a whole state or its inhabidants as communal, fascist, etc. That's it. I am no Modi fan. I am not going to defend his politics. But then this is what sucks about India. You have someone like Kamalnath occupying very important cabinet posts in Central govt, despite allegedly playing a role even worse than Maya Kodnani in 1984 riots. There are criminals in all parties getting important posts. If you don't like it, vote for AAP. At the least they are not lumpen elements.

On Kamal Nath, I do not think he has been proven guilty in 1984 so why are you assuming he is? On Tytler and Sajjan, Congress apologized and none of them are patronized by Congress, Congress infact made a sikh PM(can you imagine BJP projecting a muslim CM or PM?)

I agree on the point that there are criminals in all the parties but I believe when it comes to Gujarat, Modi and BJP the story gets a little beyond tolerance. Here are a few examples: Amit Shah has been restricted to enter Gujarat but is political campaign leader in MP, Maya Kodnani is sentenced to life but is still patronised, Vitthal Radadia was criticized for threatning toll agent at a toll booth when he was a Congress MP But now inducted in BJP and is a great man.

And this is not just restricted to Gujarat, I urge you to search Tehelka's investigative storya against Varun Gandhi and his divisive politics in Pilibhit and how BJP has endorsed him so dearly.

" Another thread on Modi and his PM candidature, no ? " " this thread has nothing to do with congress so do not compare or bring it in "

Good Luck

I really liked the way whole paranoid muslims ( Supoorter of a particular party ) is fighting against Modi a single person and was not able to stop his popularity They tried every possible mean to defame him but still he is getting support of people ? I think such articles can force people who can read to vote for him (non muslims) , once the author is calling the demolition of a mosque as the deed of BJP warriors and in second paragraph showing his concern about Gujrat BJP . I think he knew once Modi starts his campaign with full force then it will not be possible for them to stop him even after using such propaganda authors and moreover . People like Rashid Masood and Raj Babbar are only helping BJP but making fun of poor people , and i never heard from the mouth of any muslims who are whining about BJP or RSS saying something against the atrocities faced by Hindus everyone remembers the Babri Mosque and no one even remember what Mir Baki did there , and my last question to this author why he is not opposing the decision of Indian Govt under which they decided to built Somnath temple after Independence . The restoration was started by Great Sardar Patel who was a minister in so called Secular Govt and now every one can see their double standards ???????

My question is why the first secular govt funded the Hindu temple in 1947 ????

Might be Sardar Patel was also a BJP supporter ;)

You know when i was in 10th standard my English a highly respected teacher of SSK gave a defenition of Sorry ( in this case apologize) ...he said rape a gal then say sorry to her then she will tell what is the meaning of Sorry and as far as muslim and PM or CM ..please leave these posts on merit bases and yes the Sikh PM is just like Rabri of Sonia ... and as far as BJP is concerned ... APJ Kalam is the best president of India and was appointed by BJP and may i know why Congress replaced him with the dumbest first female President of India , and people love him and still he is one of the most loved president of India.

As for Tytler and Sajjan Kumar, they got Congress tickets and became ministers several times after 1984. So their being dropped is like Maya Kodnani being dropped as minister after she was found guilty.

The fact that Kamalnath is not only not proven guilty but is not even being tried is something Congress should be ashamed of. If you say he is not guilty – then, that is the case with Modi as well. When was he proved guilty? I feel that people would do well to understand the case against Modi – but with arguments like these, you are only weakening that case.

“In a recent piece, the young columnist Mihir Sharma rightly argued that exculpating Modi because of the 1984 massacres is dangerous. But the column reminded me of a conversation we had, where he asked me about the strength of the evidence against Kamal Nath for his role in the 1984 massacres.
The evidence directly linking Kamal Nath to the massacres in 1984 is far stronger than the evidence in the Gujarat riots against any senior BJP leader, bar Maya Kodnani. Yet the media has let Kamal Nath survive as one of the most important Cabinet ministers in the UPA Government for two terms, with most people sharing Mihir Sharma’s ignorance. Little has been written about him; no questions have been asked.
I have no doubt that Sharma, once aware of the evidence, would agree that Kamal Nath should step aside and allow an enquiry into his role, even if it comes 30 years too late, but I cannot say the same of several others who are today so vituperative about Modi. Many of them attack Modi while displaying a wilful disregard of the sins of the Congress. And when this happens, it is as dangerous as the problem Sharma raises.”

Wisdom came sooner than later and neither of them have been in actve politics for a lot of years, and none of them is yet proven guilty

Kamalnath had only one witness against him and Nanavati commission did take his name but only one witness could not stand tall. The Indian Express reporter who was there took side of Kamalnath saying he dispersed the crowd not supported them. I feel it would be better if we hold our horses and not be the courts ourselves.

On Modi - yes he is not guilty for riots but my problem with him beyond the riots.

Do you agree that he atleast has the moral responsibility? If BJP asked Tytler and Sajjan to go off when they did not even have any moral responsibility as none of them were CM or PM, why should they not ask Modi to go, or apologise to say the least?

Supreme court commented on his case the there is a lack of evidence, which does not mean he is innocent. Also Supreme Court commented that Modi is doing every thing possible to weaken the case of Hindus accused in court and making it tough for Muslims to fight, is that fair for a CM?

Oh so you would rather like people being killed under a CM who isnt even apologetic and compares those who lost lives to puppies? Great!

On Sonia front, I do not think she runs the country but her advisors do under her name but it was brave of her to give up the PM ship when India clearly gave HER the mandate to be the PM.

Look at it like this- on one side you have selfish and communal leader like Modi who is spending millions of $ in a hyped PR campaign, recently called the biggest Con-media job and other side you have a lady who was given a chance to be a PM, gave up her seat(for smarter reasons).

And do not amuse me with Swamy's video of how he imagines why sonia could never be the PM

There is no scope of Apology when we have an active judicial system to punish the guilty and what a great thing to do just apologize after slaughtering masses . If a person is guilty then punish the person as per law apologizing is just like making fun of Judicial system , who gave the mandate to congress if they have just 7 more Mps then BJP in 2004 and 145 MPs means just 29% of seats is mandate then yes she has the mandate . My friend amusement is the USP of some party's workers and i don't belong to that party ask someone who belongs to that party he/she will fulfill your desires , as far as money spent by Modi is concerned if he is spending his own money then no one can stop him and he is spending tax payer's money on himself and its against law then where is supa dupa centre govt and its CBI and why don't they stop him and put him behind the bars ??????

A NYT Op-ed further proves Aakar's theory:

Modi and the Muslims’ Malaise

Gujarat has an urban poverty ratio of almost 18 percent, compared with almost 21 percent for the country as a whole. Yet according to India’s Planning Commission, a government body that draws up five-year plans for the economy, 42.4 percent of the Muslims in urban Gujarat are poor, compared with 33.9 percent of Muslims in urban India overall.

Still, Modi has opposed a national plan from 2007 to set aside 15 percent of development funds for Muslims, claiming it would threaten the “social fabric of the nation.” He also has refused to implement another program that would have provided 53,000 scholarships to Muslim students in Gujarat — a state where 75 percent of school-age Muslims are enrolled in school but only 26 percent go on to finish, while 79 percent of the total school-age population is enrolled and 41 percent go on to finish.

Still, by focusing on everyone but Muslims — who account for only 8 percent of the vote in Maninagar — Modi won 77 percent of the vote in his constituency.

Modi and the B.J.P. also won 47 percent of ballots in all of Gujarat, securing 115 of the 182 seats in the state legislature. Not one of the B.J.P.’s candidates was Muslim, even though almost 10 percent of Gujarat’s population is Muslim.

A comprehensive 2011 report of government data by Abusaleh Shariff, who was chief economist of the National Council of Applied Economic Research for more than 15 years, concludes that Muslims in Gujarat “fare poorly on parameters of poverty, hunger, education and vulnerability on security issues — nowhere benefiting from the feel-good growth story” painted by the current government.

HAHA
:topsy_turvy: How amusing !!

Thread owner talks of not to bring Congress in the discussion that clearly indicates his intention to bash BJP in general and Modi in particular. However as expected he couldn't resist himself to go ga ga over his fav party and protect its criminals once again.

No wonder, Modi is worst nightmare for UPA govt and its sissy leaders and of course not to forget congressi spoons. Bechare Allah, Allah aur Ram, Ram se jyada Modi Modi karte rehte hain. tsch, tsch, tsch! :stupid:

Isko kehte hain, Falling pray to one's own trap !! :triumphant:
