Why spurt in rape cases?

अजंता एलोरा की गुफाओ में की गयी चित्रकारी और कामसूत्र के बारे में महत्वपूर्ण जानकारी देने के लिये धन्यवाद |

In India, vulgar display of sexuality has been a part of its ancient culture. The sculptures and paintings in Ajanta and Alora Caves, the literature like Kama Sutra, the traditions of 'devdasis' or 'nagarvadhu' etc. are glaring example of this.

The ultimate responsibility to contain this menace lies with the authorities responsible for maintaining order in society. Stricter vigil and harsher punitive measures may be helpful in minimizing this shameful and sinful act by the beasts. All rape cases must be decided by the special and fast track courts within a stipulated time-frame and the guilty must be sent behind bars or hanged depending upon gravity of the crime.

The researchers of these survey's don't understand the difference b/w classes psychology.

Consensual sex in upper class behind the curtains >><< Forced sex/Rape in low class.

The difference is Low class doesn't have the element of concealment of consensual sex. There ain't no options.
Whereas in upper class: Majority of girls/ladies have the advantage of no interference from parents (parents being working & busy), studying/doing job in cities away from parents/taboo attached with sex before/after marriage, moral values.Having boyf for sex is a common phenomenon.

The lower class feels the urge for likes of such upper class ladies (easy access to porn <cheap smartphones>, movies etc adds fuel to their urge), if upper class men/gents do it without a pop, why can't we.
The lower class is most suppressed class and the acts which involve suppression or making fun of others (including their own people) makes them proud. The solution lies in discouraging more than two children so that proper education could be provided to their children.

thats right. it depends upon individual to individual. so far no strict correlation is made between porn and rapes. studies may differ on finding.

“Freedom without limits is just a word”
Terry Pratchett
Kamlesh Vaswani’s PIL seeking to ban the viewing of pornography and make it a non-bailable offence has raised eyebrows. Columnists and social media commentators have greeted the idea with shock, raising issues such as social liberty, sexual freedom, and the fact that the mere banning of pornography might not bring down the incidence of rape. On the surface of it, this sounds politically correct but the reality is much more complex.
Take two facts. First, the two men arrested for raping the five-year-old in Delhi were watching porn before they stepped out and abducted the girl. Second, Google Trends shows that in 2012, New Delhi recorded the highest percentage worldwide for the number of times the word ‘porn’ was searched online. And National Crime Records Bureau data for the same year show that 706 rapes were reported in Delhi, the highest in the last decade and more than double the number for 2002.
In the West
Too simplistic a correlation? Perhaps. But does that mean we can afford to ignore the parallel? The world over, governments and sociologists are struggling with the issue of untrammelled access to pornography and the alarming rise in incidents of violent rape and child abuse. In London, Prime Minister David Cameron is set to announce a government-backed code of conduct that will block pornography in public spaces such as cafes and railway stations where children are likely to be present.
Liberal Iceland’s existing laws banning pornography are similar to India’s — vague and rarely enforced. The government there is drafting a law, much to the horror of some of its wired and freethinking citizens, that seeks to ban pornography altogether to protect children from violent sexual imagery. AGuardian report quotes an Icelandic Interior Ministry spokesperson: “When a 12-year-old types ‘porn’ into Google, he or she is not going to find photos of naked women out on a country field, but very hardcore and brutal violence.”
The problem with pornography is just that. It is not so much about erotica, as its advocates will have us believe, as it is about extreme violence, degradation and subjugation of women, and the violation of children and teenagers. It extols rape, defilement and mutilation. Most dangerously, it mainstreams all of this and packages it as the “normal.” This is lethal in a place like India, where large numbers of people leapfrog from a state of total ignorance about even ordinary sex to direct exposure to vicious abuse.
Documenting abuse
As the pornography industry thrives by getting more extreme each day, sociologists have correspondingly begun to note that gang rapes have risen, the age of the rapists has fallen, and the violence is much more brutal today. One report quotes U.S. Department of Justice statistics that show the percentage of rapes involving two or more offenders increasing from seven per cent in 1994-1998 to 10 per cent in 2005-2010.
In last year’s Steubenville High School rape in Ohio, U.S., when a high schoolgirl was doped and repeatedly violated by her schoolmates, two other appalling facts emerged. One, the rapists uploaded photos of the acts on social media where it went viral; and second, students who witnessed the acts said they did not recognise the acts as rape. In the last few months, two teenagers, Rehtaeh Parsons and Audrey Potts, in the U.S. and Canada, respectively, have committed suicide after being gang-raped by 16- and 17-year-old boys who then posted the photos online. Let us not forget our own MMS scandals involving schoolchildren.
Blurring lines
This trend of online documentation of abuse follows closely on the footsteps of porn websites that actively encourage the posting of real-life pictures of girls caught unawares or of pictures taken of them with hidden cameras. In other words, the lines are already blurring between pornographic websites and social network websites. What was once an explicit image on a clandestine website could today be a picture of a classmate on Facebook.
It might be statistically impossible to directly link the viewing of pornography to rape, but it is undeniable that its mainstreaming is actively encouraging and endorsing a culture of abuse of women and children. Recent news reports, in fact, have quoted counsellors who say that obsessive porn viewing is today a leading cause of marital abuse and divorce in India.
The link between violence in films and the increased rate of violence in society is equally unverifiable, but it’s interesting that this medium has always been filtered by some form of certification. How then is a medium that is inherently much more dangerous left so unregulated?
The existing IT Act, which stipulates three years’ imprisonment for publishing and transmitting obscene material electronically, is followed more in the breach. Following the PIL, the Supreme Court has asked the Ministries of Information Technology, Information and Broadcasting, and Home Affairs to come up with some answers by April 29. Whether it is stricter policing and stiffer (and implemented) punishments, or some sort of technologically feasible filters, or steep levies on the viewing of such content, some adequate response is required, something that makes it more difficult to access porn than ticking a box that asks if you are 18.
Yes, freedoms are precious and worth fighting for, but just because some of our men are not mature enough to enjoy these freedoms responsibly, should our children and women be made to pay the price?
http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/op-ed/freedom-that-must-have-limits/article4663661.ece

thanks for sharing such info. Article seems to be pondering over impacts of porn and trying to establish a relationship b/w porn and rapes. Nevertheless, no where in d world, it is found dat there is a adequate relationship b/w porn and rapes. so u may or may not rule it out.

bt i ve another point to argue, hw would u censor web/publications/media? in today's world which is so connected, how could it be stopped?

in States, government put a strict ban on liquor. but after some time, they had to revoke the ban. reason was simple, ban was unsuccessful. it is quite clr that no government or authority ever successfully banned alcohol n prostitution. d more u ban them, more they spread. so it must be left to individual discretion(as long as individual is over 18 yrs old) to decide wht does he/she wants.

but just because some of our men are not mature enough to enjoy these freedoms responsibly, should our children and women be made to pay the price?

Bingo -------Now we all kinda know the reason . It is not porn , bollywood n etc etc rather " Maturity " of the so called Man.
bingo, ur point makes lot of sense. hw we jump to conclusion n make an analogy on sch trivial issues.

Undeterred and unfettered access to pornographic material and the vulgar display of sexuality in Bollywood movies has certainly contributed to increasing the degree of perversion, especially among the adolescents, the uncultured/beastly elements and the 'malangs'. Therefore, the supply and dissemination of of pornographic material and telecast of semi-blue movies should be banned. Internet Service Providers must be mandated to block the porno sites and a heavy penalty must be imposed for any violation. However, Bollywood's vulgarity and easy access to porn are not the only reasons responsible for a rise in the incidence of rapes. This can be attributed to poor policing, intelligence failure, and a lecher judicial system also. Of course, this has to do with the human psyche also but psychopaths and sex-maniacs are a universal phenomenon. No amount of moral education is going to change their attitude. In every society, there have been perverts and will remain in future also.

Ur post is gd read and makes lot of sense. bt still kinda disagree with ur first points where u hv emphasized upon blocking porn n media which shows vulgarity. hw can u ban it is a big question. such ban ve never been successful anywhere in d world. our neighbor, pakistan has banned pretty much everything frm betting to porn to alcohol. bt still no luck. trade of alchohol is still dere, prostitution is still dere. it didn;t help. i reckon banning doesn;t help u in getting results.

Well I do not think banning porn or other material will help in reducing the number of rape cases. The only way you can reduce it is by moral education. Also judicial process needs a reboot. Convicts must be brought to justice and fair trials are must. Strict action against police officers who try to hush up these case and mint money through such cases. Also society needs to understand that supressing cases gives more encouragement to rapist. So society as a whole needs to change its perception that its not always girl's fault. Usually in our society, people put most of blame on girl rather than on boy. I think this bias is more responsible for such cases and gives more encourgement to rapists.
friend, lot of ur points make sense. bt how wld u bring change in d society. its hard to change perception.

but just because some of our men are not mature enough to enjoy these freedoms responsibly, should our children and women be made to pay the price?

Bingo -------Now we all kinda know the reason . It is not porn , bollywood n etc etc rather " Maturity " of the so called Man.

What are your views on "+ immature women". As, taali do haath se bajti hai, ek se nahi....

Don't forget, in villages consensual sex becomes rape, when caught red-handed.

Why spurt in rape cases 'shown by media in metros'?

(I'll take a different stance this time from Media's angle)

In Business Sense:-> It's economical for them to deploy their metro Van within the city (30~40 mins) to cover rape cases, and they can then play the same recording again and again, all day long. For the next 3 days,

- they invite public/expert debates, sitting at the comfort of News room, and having people added over low cost video/tele conference.
- Cover agitating people at the India gate and play the same recording all day long.

Ever wondered:
1. They don't bother to give the same magnitude of coverage of rapes in Tier-II, Tier-III cities & villages. Why?? Is the ijjat of non-metro women any lesser than the Metro Women?
2. Don't cover rapes happening in West Bengal & Madhya Pradesh. Where statistics shows the top ratings. No, It adds up to their cost significantly.
3. This saves them for the trouble of covering other important news/scandals, saving Manhours & costs.
dear, a genuine concern. media is still restricted to metros only. d bigger problems lies in rural outfits, e.g bihar, up where people don;t know their rights, n if someone tries to exercise right, he/she gets a bad treatment from our cops. life is life. where ever it is. bt in our country, rich people get away by paying bribes and their influence.
on light note, sanjay dutt, salman khan got away through money and influence. had it been some common man, he would ve suffered for his lifetime. in my opinion, education can solve this prob to some degree. when more people ll put pressure on administration n question cops/admins for misdeeds etc. there is more pressure on admin nowadays than it used to be 15 yrs ago.

dear, again some gud points u ve put fwd. talking/discussing sex is a taboo in our society. no education on sex is formally available. its all under cover. since we have turned a blind eye to such things, we r seeing d results today. so opening up n discussing can help to some extent.

Stop being emotional. This is the fact, No country is bad or good .. only citizens of respective country make it or break it. Recent spurt and agitation afterwards worsen the image of our country which is already dented by corruption and bad governance. Here in Australia people aks me and I don't have any answer for this. I'm not the one who bring some 'Aankde' like a mathematician and compare. This is evident India is in deep $hit and its keep going down and we are boasting in vain and living in a bubble.

Wake up to the reality .. India is no more 'Mahan' .. actually we the Indians are 'Mahan' ! Thumbs down !!

Unfortunate and avoidable comment on the motherland!!

friends,

thanks for ur responses, a lot of good points fwd by u. Taking discussion fwd, whts ur view on legalization of prostitution. can it make any difference in reducing such crime(though on its face value, such statements look gross n stupid, backed by no research). bt still want to know ur opinion?

Strange ! people like you also blame environment and technology for rise in rape cases where as root cause of the disease lies in upbringing of children and absence of good parenting skills. Many social surveys have revealed that this is a social problem mainly found in lower strata of the society. I believe every parent knows how their child is developing and in what type of activities they are involving themselves but fail to see future rapist in them and sometime ignore their advancement because they do not understand how to tackle this problem. Culprit's parents should also be held equally responsible for the crime. Parents should give appropriate sex education to their children at right age.

You made an important point which I really missed. But your contention that this happens only in lower strata of society is not fully true. These incidents take place in almost every section of society. The only difference is that because of free mixing of opposite genders and relatively wider acceptability of promiscuity in the elite and affluent society, this matter is not highlighted unless there is some incident involving a minor. But of course good parenting can check this malaise to a great extent.

This 'important Jaankaari' is a common knowledge which is available even in primary school level books.

Accessibility to filthy literature and pornographic visuals certainly contribute to the arousal of bestial lust in human brain. I have also passed through the corridor of adolescence and youth (of course, still feel young) and have experienced and witnessed the ill effects of this. Let me cite an example. The incidence of sex-related crime has been minimal in the areas where Arya Samaj had its influence. The simple reason being, their teachings against indulgent and sexually explicit behaviour inculcating good values in the young brains and motivating them to observe 'Brahamcharya' which in turn helped in keeping graph of sex-related crime very low. So, societal norms of sexual behaviour and the healthy surroundings matter a lot.

Republic of India is quickly becoming Rape-public of India !!
I read an article which I want to share.

Comparing India with west on rape statistics written by American writer
Rape Statistics

Per Capita for 100,000 population

India = 1.8,

United Kingdom (England and Wales) = 28.8,

USA = 27.3.

Sweden 63.5

Australia 79.5

search for "Rape more common than smoking in the US". There are more
woman who have been raped than are smoking in US According to the U.S.
Department of Justice's National Crime Victimization Survey --there is
an average of 207,754 victims (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual
assault each year.

Here is just a small sample...

28 Mar 2013: Girl, 14, raped by two men on Glasgow bus (The Guardian)

January 14, 2013: Elmont, New York, 15-Year-Old Girl Gang-Raped In Front
Of Teacher, Who Allegedly Does Nothing ( The Inquisitr)

February 12, 2013, Australian tourist raped in NYC after leaving cab

April 10 2013, Rape of Teen Girl Has Neighbors on Edge. Police say a
14-year-old girl was gang raped by a group of five men. ( Philadelphia)

April 5, 2013, La Salle, Police Investigate Easter Sunday Sex Assault. A
La Salle University student told police she was grabbed by four men and
gang raped just off campus. ( Philadelphia)

March 22, 2013, Woman Tied Up, Raped and Robbed. Police are searching
for two men who tied-up, sexually assaulted, and robbed a 62-year-old
woman inside a North Philadelphia home. ( Philadelphia)

April 6 2013, Woman Raped, Slashed in Rittenhouse Square. ( Philadelphia)

These are just some that have managed to even make the local news. Most
don't even get any attention at all. Why aren't these stories front page
on Yahoo? or even in the News Feed?

Where is the Outrage, Riots? or even a small protest?

There were 572 cases of rape in New Delhi in 2011, Australia and Sweden
about 16000. Population of New Delhi ( 20 million) exceeds that of
Australia and Sweden. That would make New Delhi safer by several orders
of magnitude than any western nation.

Raping is so common in US and Western nations that it doesn't even come in news anymore...We should be ashamed Americans.

The horrible events that took place in New Delhi caused a national riot
because the idea of several men brutalizing a woman like that was
unheard of. Things like that happen in the US, but no one riots because
it is to be expected. Doesn't even make the news, lucky if even local
news paper will cover it.

Statistics are completely in line with what historically travelers
through out the centuries have remarked on how unbelievably safe
respected woman are in India. For famous travelers, go read Mark Twain's
writing on his journey through India. Or Read German philosopher
Friedrich Nietzsche, essays on status of woman in ancient cultures. Or
even Voltaire.

So much so that in PBS Documentary on production and consumption of GOLD
( early 80's), the host (British accent) while in India remarked that
"I got to say this, I know this film has nothing to do with this, but I
am amazed how respected and safe woman are in this country" gave several
examples, one particular one about a woman cutting grass in field
loaded with Gold jewelry, feeling completely safe.

People who credited with improving women's status in western society in
17th and 18th century didn't go to Church on Sunday's but met in what
were known as "India Houses" or Hindu Societies. They were collectively
known as Deist's. Their model for both religious tolerance and improving
status of women the west was Indian Culture. ( go read " British
discovery of Hinduism in 17th century" it might out of print, but it's a
Ph'd thesis at Oxford, should be able to get it in their archives)

Nothing sums up batter than this, they can also go to prostitutes but no, they want to rape those high/upper-middle class women.

They are getting quality conscious. Quality pros are out of their budget.

Few more Insights for lower class :-

1. Fear of getting popped by cops (+badnaami) on being caught in a raid on prostitute den.
2. Fear of getting popped by neighbors/relatives (+badnaami) when caught in case of consensual sex, which has a high probability such cases escalated to the Judiciary system & wrongfully rape conversions.
3. Easy access of tinted glass cars/vans as the potential place for committing rape. (Most of the rapist being cabbie, autowallah's, private buss staff etc)
Quoting a famous quote here: "Women need a reason to have sex. Men just need a place".
4. Club & Disc culture in desi areas: They're high on alcohol and get further high on seeing a women high on alcohol with a male friend, getting out of clubs. They take such women for granted. Male friend is injured & thrown out, and lady is abducted in car, raped and thrown out. And hit the headline next day.
