Dear Members,

I don't understand the wisdom of keeping Mr. Natwar Singh as minister without portfolio. Is it not some thing a police inspector is assigned to lines? In all morality of issues, he himself should have resigned and let the investigations prove his innocence if that be the case.

People in India would know more about the issue. Kindly share your views on the performance of Mr. Natwar Singh as the foreign minister and ethical issues with his own politics.

It's pretty obvious that this whole business of 'minister without a portfolio' has a lot deeper reasoning’s attached to it...after all Congress gets to lose much more (than just the embarrassment it has now)....it's the 'Chup rehnae ki keemat' more likely....

Imagine what all he might have to say/disclose/leak if the party throws him out outright and he then starts behaving like a stung animal!?!....

"Fooled-for-Oil" - UN Oil for Food program.

Congress had taken this step to escape further embrassement and would not like to be hunted for life like the bofors' saga.

It's hard to doubt the credibilty of respected politician and an able diplomat like Natwar Singh. He is one of the few ministers who is for aptly suitable for their portfolio.

But I have some serious doubts about his son, Jagat Singh, was earlier also in media's cynosure, during days, when he given some solid maar, in a starred Delhi hotel, to coca-cola excutive, who had relationship with his estranged wife. After very few days, mysterious death of his wife due to fall from Hyatt Regency roof top.

But Jagat singh could hardly be the beneficiary of Sadam's Oil-Gift-Vouchers without the support from his father.

US claims that they have bombed all the government buildings in Iraq but spared the Oil ministry building and documents there helped in unearthing the scam. Hope they have missed one guided missile. It would have saved the skin of so many people and corporate around the world, who knowingly or inknowingly(as some claims that kickbacks were actually service and tranportation fees charged by Iraqi Authoritues) are involved in scam.

I am quite sure that Bush's Texas oil company would have also made some money out of Oil-for-Food program ....

Oh My God!

A few months ago somebody wanted us to stand for Sajjan Kumar and he was chased out of the idea. Now we have a situation which needs objective examination.
An American alleging that Natwar was a wrong and they were right when they went to war in the Gulf....makes me laugh and dismiss it outrightly.
Let the unfortunate episode bring out the truth and we will wait untill it is out...and i am sure Natwar will come out clean. To hell with the foreign office.
Kisiko bet lagani ho to bolo.

Is America really has any role against Mr. Natwar Singh in this episode. As I can read in some articles in newspapers that America does not like Natwar's forieng policy. I read that documents which have been used by Volker committee, were handed over to Volker committee after a deep inspection (Heraferi) by USA Army, and Natwar Singh being a Nehru era’s man won’t like to support whatever America did in International politics. During the Iraq war congress opposed NDA Government’s almost decided decision to send Indian trop into Iraq due to Natwar’s suggestion into parliament. So might be there have any direct or indirect role to drag Natwar Singh into this scam ?
Any inputs on this point plz ?

politics cheez hi aisi hai............. congress ko to bus manage karna aata hai. apni image bhi bachhi rahe aur dhere dhere natwar bhi bahar. waisee natwar sahab ko khud hi resign dee dena chahiya tha.

the other view

dear all
it is indeed worthless to discuss the image of congress party and for that matter any politician here.they all are hand in glove when it comes to the self benefit policies be it Natwar singh, george ferdandis or late Rajiv Gandhi.
so we should wait for any substantial evidence if ever it comes from UN or the enquiry commitee. How ever it is unlikely that this eyewash (the enquiry)will result is something unusual.it is mostlikely will give 'CLEAN CHIT' to both natwar and congress.here is a link which will be substantiate my views.

I don't know how many of you have read this article on rediff.com:

Author is not well known but he's written very well here.

Aaj America wale hame batayengey ki kisko Foreign minister banana hai. Their report mentioned Natwar Singh's name and India fired him! Pity on our govt.

Kofi Annan didn't resign from UN when his son's name was there in the similar controversy.
Bush and his coterie didn't resign when they went on to destroy a country without any fault of theirs. Infact they get elected for a second term.
Blair also won a second term.
A.Q. Khan, the father of Pakistan's nuclear weapons program, was given clean chit by Mush and Bush

And the list goes on & on.....

But in this case, our govt. acted blindly & foolishly. I don't know why they
want to show it world they are still puppets of US and other major powers. Infact, they fail to acknowledge that they are going to be a major power soon if they don't act like this.

But who's going to tell this to them !!

What do the Members Think about the Issue now?

With the interview of Ambessador to Crotia known, should Congress still keep Mr. Natwar Singh a minister while the inquiry is going on. Or it is Mr Natwar Singh who should resign on moral grounds (if he is convinced that he is innocent). I was just wondering, that if Mr. Natwar Singh had not been close to the Congress President, would he still been the minister in the cabinet?

Holding a position of a Cabinet Minister does affect a lots of things while the case is being investigated. If congress party feels to keep Mr. Natwar Singh getting a stream of income and position in the organization based on his past record, then it would be a good idea to adjust him in a Party Post rather than keeping him a minister. This would also silence the opposition and would allow some business to be conducted in Parliament.

Quite right, america wale are no one to dictate to us. But a rotten apple is rotten. It will spoil the rest of the lot. For all his qualifications, Natwar is no dhoodh ka dhula. For last so many years he has been in Congress, can he remain aloof/ untouched from the keechad that is the basic Cong culture ? I think nobody should support hih just because he ais a fellow Jat. The fact is that a bad person is bad for the whole country in the long run.

Some outdated but interesting info :

found this reponse at a forum. Says it all!

Right friends. Which part of
Kashmir did Ghulam Nabi Azad crawl out from? Why he didn't have a constituency in India for so many years? Who is Oscar fernandes, Ahmed Patel, Ambica Soni? What is their political stature? Mani Shankar Aiyar can't even compare to Chidambaran. Sonia's father-in-law was Feroz Khan, who changed his name to Gandhi at the time of marriage (see web encyclopedia). Rajiv converted to Roberto, now Priyanka is married to Robert Vadra and Rahul has the Colombian-Spanish connection. This, is the ruling caucus of India. Naturally, they are all Hindu-haters, spewing venom on Saffron, which has kept alive India's spirit of independence and tolerance through centuries of foreign misrule and sheer loot. These are lootocrats of India, subverting the media and academia fed on scraps thrown from the overflowing coffers of Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Foundations. The whole country they want to mortgage to the foreign powers. This is why in AICC they forgot national issues and engaged in bootlicking the Italian soles. Mr. Binu George, you sound like a pathetic specimen, from the Italian laundromat, neither here nor there. Forgive him Oh Lord, for there is not a single patriotic bone in his body. Please help him understand the sanctity of the national flag for true patriots anywhere on earth! Uma Bharati is the most powerful woman in India today! The worst efforts of Hindu-haters will help in producing the finest blossoms of Indian independence and patriotism in each moment of crisis, as proven oft-enough through history. Jai Hind.

In 1997, the then I K Gujral government allocated a government bungalow in
Delhi
's prestigious Lodhi Estate to a young married couple. It was a significant wedding gift, with a market value in excess of Rs 100 million. It was also the first time in the history of Independent India that a newly married couple had been given such a subsidy by a country that has more desperately poor people within it than any other.

However, obviously kind-hearted as he is, the then prime minister decided that a capital cost of Rs 100 million and annual costs of Rs 4 million plus on security and other expenses was not excessive, especially as the taxpayer and not the himself would have to foot the burden.

Sadly, the wedding gift did not save poor Gujral from being bundled out of office by the very mother of the charming bride. Perhaps the official reason for the gift was responsible for the lady's anger. It was expressly stated that the new residence was essential for 'security reasons'. Logically, this would mean that the bride and groom would have been unsafe in the sprawling government-provided bungalow occupied by her mother, the mother's two divorced sisters, and her son on his visits to
India
. What a slur to cast on anyone, that her own daughter is not safe if she shares the same roof as her mother! No wonder that Gujral was bundled out by Sonia Gandhi, the distinguished occupant of 10 Janpath.

Sonia Gandhi has given no indication that she is below the poverty line. Indeed, the income-tax records of her parents, sisters and their former husbands would indicate the financial progress of this delightful family, especially during the 1980s. However, for some odd reason neither our globetrotting journalists nor any government (including the present one) has as yet revealed ANY of the details about the most powerful family in -- sorry, in and out of --
India
.

No one has asked whether Rahul has been these past nine years, and what he is doing now. No one is going into the progress in the business of the son-in-law ever since he married into the family that owns
India. And if there have been news reports about the periodicity of the family's foreign visits, and their cost to the taxpayer in one form or the other, these have appeared in publications yet to be launched. Such a lack of interest in the likely candidate for India
's next prime minister indicates that it was not just during the Emergency that the press crawled before the official Gandhis.

For there happens to be another daughter-in-law as well, one who stays in her own house and who writes about dogs and cats. The difference in what the State spends on the one and on the other is enormous, though that can be explained away by the fact that as a nation,
India is yet to forget the fact that it was ruled by Europeans for 500 years. Had Sonia been from Africa or from China, definitely the elite in Mumbai, Delhi
and other cities would not have crawled for an invitation to some banquet where one can view the Empress of India from far away.

Way back in the Narasimha Rao years, Digvijay Singh, N D Tiwari and others would not have waited in the sun at
Lucknow
airport for hours to catch a glance from Sonia (and a smile from Priyanka) as they boarded a helicopter for Amethi. In the old days, domestic servants used to wait at the gates for the Master and Mistress to come. Nothing has changed.

Lest all this be construed as an attack on Sonia, let it be clear that the lady was a loving wife and is a devoted mother. Rajiv Gandhi was lucky to have won her heart, and she took good care of him. She has also been a supportive parent, especially to her son. In private, Sonia Gandhi is a shy and attractive individual, sincere both in her likes and her aversions. However, she should never have succumbed to the pressure of retainers and entered politics. By doing so, she has taken up a task that is both distant and distasteful to her. She has opened herself up to scrutiny and criticism, which cannot long be postponed.

There is a proverb: be careful of what you wish, you may get it. Should Sonia Gandhi get the position that she has been aiming at, the chair once occupied by her husband and two others from his family, her first few forays in Parliament will show the extent of her mistake. While journalists may exhibit a masochistic delight in being ignored, the likes of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and George Fernandes are unlikely to be so forgiving. Instead of one decision every week, there will be twenty or more in a day, many of which will attract the same flak that Sonia's help to Rabri Devi did.
