Foreword by General K.M. Cariappa
I have read the “History of the Jats” by Lieutenant Ram Sarup Joon with great interest.
This is the first time ever I have read such illuminating, impressive and educative write-up about this great class of our people—the Jats. Many ‘cobwebs’ I had in my mind about the origin and history of this virile community—the Jats have now been removed. I have been more than impressed with all that is said in the book. I did not realize that the Jat community was such an ancient community who once ruled Italy and played very important part in the life of far off European countries like Spain, Portugal, Greece, Scandinavia, Turkey and so on.
I see from the various quotations in this book, from authentic publications by renowned historians, that Jat Community is one of the oldest in our country with a great past both national and international.
Perhaps at some future date some of our own historians may say something about the claims made by the author about the Jats but until then, I feel we must take all that is said in this book as correct.
Lieutenant Ram Sarup has indeed done a yeoman’s service to this great community and to our country in writing this book. He certainly had done continuous, energetic and fruitful research all these years and has produced a very readable book.
I congratulate him on this splendid work of his. I hope every Indian will read this book because it gives such a fine, detailed and impressive evidence of the greatness of this fine community—the Jats.
During my service in the Army I had on many occasions Jat soldiers and Jat Units under my command. Their sense of duty, their loyalty to the country, their efficiency as soldiers and their bravery as a class were all of the highest order. I have happy memories of all these in these fine sons of our soil.
I congratulate Lieutenant Colonel Dal Singh on the splendid translation he has made of this Book from Hindi into English.
I hope a copy of this book will find a place in every library—military and civil—throughout the country.
K.M. Cariappa,
