UP Election-A Hung Vidhan Sabha

Dear All

The division of votes will be on Jat Got and the issues of people like education , Health, Sustainable and equitable growth are on the back seat. Kharid Farokhat Hogi aur sarkar banegi. Kiski? Mulayam+ others or Mayawati + others may be the game.Chhote Chaudhary ke din lad liye deekhain sain.

R.S.Dahiya

Mayawati has surprised everybody by a near clear majority.
A lot of factors contributed to her win and loss to Mulayam singh.
Could we have the analysis, what led to this verdict.

My 2 cents

Mayawati is going to be next CM of UP. I do not have much idea about UP politics but can guess what led Mayawati to this position:
1. She did not highlighted the "agdi-pichhdi jati" factor much this time. No use of word "Manuwadi".
2. She choosen many candidates from socalled "agdi jati", I mean ticket distribution was based on real constituency caste distribution.
3. Mulayam govt.'s failure in law and order helped Mayawati a lot.
4. Weak congress and BJP could present themselves as an alternative.

Looking forward to see more detailed and real analysis.

Dear Every one:

It is unfortunate that Ms. Mayawati has once again come to the power in UP inspite of her corrupt practices in the past.

Any way you get what you deserve.

I think with a thin majority or may be looking for one or two MLA's it might be a good idea for her to join hands with Ch. Ajit Singh which Chote Chaudhary would love to do to get into power.

How well that work for the state is any one's guess. May be we will see more bad roads, power shortages and few new Ambedkar statues all over the state in the name of development. Some of the new rest houses PWD in Badalpur may be in offing for the old one is I guess is in a bad state.

God bless Uttar Pradesh.

And by the way What does it say about the Central Elections next time? Is Congress and BJP watching?

Tavathia Sahab,

What has happened in UP is something like a revolution. Its going to spread in entire Hindi belt in no time. For the first time in the history of India a Dalit has been accpted as a leader even by the so called upper castes. I don't quite agree with your analysis. As far as corruption is concerned, there is hardly any leader or party who is devoid of this. My Gut feeling is that Ms Mayawati will be a much better CM this time as she has her own majority. Her eyes are already on the PM post in next general election and she knows well that she has to perform well in UP to make it to the PM's post. Don't forget that this time she has brahmans running her programmes. India is heading for many surprises in coming few years as far as I can see.

Rajender JI

Just echoed my own views ,This is the beginning of a revolution and the results will be felt very soon across entire Hindi belt. This is a welcome disicion as people who were oppressed for centuries will get what was long over due
This time there was much more consolidation of Dalits votes and results are obvious.

As far as corruption is concerned I totally agree with you and some times find such logic weired that corruption of so and so is bad and corruption of others ,OK , reservation because of economic privileges of wealthier section is OK , but very harmful if some other form of reservation are sought ,Hinduism is OK Jatism is wrong ,Harynvi is wrong and Indian is right ..etc .... little digression though....

I don't feel that upper class voted that much for her but it was division of these votes that helped her a lot ,whether they accept her or not, fact is she is their leader and it is a triumph of democratic process.

Mayavati and Kanshi succeeded in their efforts to get what was due to them and was their right also but see our Jats of rajasthan and western UP who are pulling each other legs and further climbing down the power ladder.

Election!

Ye to hona hi tha.....!

Positive side of the result is that "we are not going to have legislative election at least for next five years".

If that is the Best So Be It.

Dear Dr. Sahab,

I hope it is so, but I don't have any faith in Ms. Mayawati or any one. We need a fresh change. I am amazed to note that even intellectual class forgets things soon, leave aside the less educated for our village folks who have little access to the wealth of information to base their decisions.

Your statement that Mayawati would be a better CM this time, does not seems to be inspiring to me, for once a theif is likely to be always a theif. Actually this time she would have no checks on her corrupt practices. By giving tickets to Brahmins and other so called upper casts, I don't think that has changed any thing as far as the character of the person is concerned. What she has been able to do is, to fool the general public including the intellectual class. Most of the voting in our country is done on Caste basis. Brahmins or Jats or Muslims are given tickets not because of her love for upper caste or change of heart for upper castes, but because of the demographic compositions of the constituencies.

What we are trying every time is to bring one corrupt leader after another. Actually it has become, innings game for them with our full support. The simple confidence we put is that you loot the state for 5 years and then give chance to another for next five years, only for the first one to come back to do it again.

Let us be practical. We need to find and groom the new generation of politicians. Create a political atmosphere for our young generation to groom and build this nation. May be supporting the person in power, we might get some benefit to fulfil our own agenda or projects, but that is not the solution to our root problem.

I will speak on this subject after one year. I hope you would be able to put some concrete figures of developments. And let me assure you Sir, I would like to be proved wrong if it helps the state.

I am expecting more Ambedkar parks in UP!!!!

She has already suspended somebody for not taking care of Ambedkar Park.

Tavathia Sahab,

1. Please tell me the name of an honest UP politician who would have made the best CM ?

2. Review of work after one year, be it for Mayawati or anyone else, will always have some down sides and some shining sides.

3. Who stops these so called honest and competent people to join politics and work for the upliftment of nation ?

So far Dalits had the upper castes to be balmed for all their problems. I am sure they will have their own people to blamed and this will certainly mature the Indian democracy down the line.

Respected Tevathia Sir,
More than often, Like our President , you are quoting about grooming of young blood to lead.I would like to ask you about practical possiblity of it? If yes, kindly devise some solid plan keeping in the mind that Politics is the frustating process of very slow growth. It takes decades.
Otherwise here, In the era of "Think Global-Act Local" ,we will keep on discussing 'Opnionistic' issues and another XYZ would lead.
There are various groups and honest people working for some good purposes,

Question is How they can be bring together under one agenda?

Dear Mukesh,
Whar RK sir has analysed in his post is totally what happened in UP.What Mayawati would do , thats another question. In these election, Ithink for the first time election were carried without any hassle in 7-8 phases and due to mostly unbaised approach of Election commission.
Morever, Why do you think more than 30% adult people who have voted for Mayawati are idiots and they dnt understand to whom they are voting.?
Mayawati is a mass leader in UP.After all She has won a election in democratic way.

Would you like to tell in detail about 'revolution' you have mentioned?
Democracy is the best natural system to be practised. It might not be perfect because it demands honest participation of Public. If you have guts or any one in this case, can empower it.
Good Luck.

.

I really don't know what they are ? but when it comes to election I'm more than sure at present most of the people hardly think to whom they are going to vote..there are very few who think a lot before going to cast their vote keeping the national interests in mind...people follow the heard mentality..they have only few points to think upon like cast, religion and emotional issues...and when these issues come to rule people hardly think from mind..feeling of revenge is omni present in every election which is against the true spirit of democracy....politicians like mayawati know very well that how to play with the sentiments of the voters and because of this strategy they succeed every time... people cast their vote blindly inspite of knowing that he/she is the same person who had betrayed them..they are making the mockery of democracy...

Mukesh,
Here's ans excellent article on the Indian democracy (or the lack of it!!) by Atanu Dey ..... I have reproduced the article here.... the original post is here...
http://www.deeshaa.org/2004/05/17/cargo-cult-and-democracy/

There is an interesting anthropological curiosity which arose amongst the islands in the South Pacific after the Second World War. It is known as the Cargo Cult. I first came across it in Marvin Harris’s book Cows, Pigs, Wars & Witches many years ago. (By the by, I highly recommend Harris’s book OUR KIND: Who we are, Where we came from & Where are we going—Evolution of Human Life & Culture.)
The islanders had noticed that Europeans had some sort of powerful magic which allowed them to receive stuff from the heavens. The islanders decided that they too must make arrangements to receive stuff. So they faithfully reproduced the artifacts that they saw the Europeans use in magically making cargo appear out of the skies. They cleared a large area in the forest, lit bonfires around this, built a hut close by in which they put a box with antennae sticking out of it, made ‘headphones’ out of coconut shells, and spoke earnestly into a ‘microphone’. Then they waited for cargo to drop out of the skies, just as they had seen the Europeans receive during the war.
It is a fascinating tale and has wide-ranging implications. The islanders were not stupid, merely ignorant. They figured out what we could call the ‘front end’ of the whole enterprise. They did not know that there was a very deep backend to the deal. In their ignorance, they expected a facsimile to work and when it didn’t, they attempted to modify the front end to more accurately reflect the bits they had observed the Europeans use.
The cargo cult is an amazingly important metaphor for our age. Technology is increasingly becoming more complex and the effective use of this complex technology confers immense advantage. However, the more complex the technology, the more its use is dependent on a complex ecology within which it is developed. Transplanting the technology without the supporting ecology is a waste because it does not work as advertised. The technology—whether it is hardware, software, all sorts of institutions—co-evolved with other bits that form an ecological whole which make the whole system function whereas any subsystem in isolation will not work.
Let’s take an institution such as capitalism, for example. Hernando DeSoto in his book The Mystery of Capital: Why Capitalism Triumphs in the West and Fails Everywhere Else outlines the missing bits in the case of capitalism. Another example: why did the shift to a market economy spell disaster for the former Soviet Union. A market economy has a very deep backend. That backend includes institutions such as the legal system which enforces contracts, a flexible labor market, a number of banking and financial intermediation institutions, and so on. Without the supporting institutions, the market institution is a non-starter. It is merely a cargo cult market economy.
In the area of digital technology also, we see the cargo cult mentality. The modern computer evolved in advanced industrialized countries (AIC). AICs have other systems that support the use of computers and these systems also evolved to keep pace with the rapid evolution of computers. Transplanting computers to a place where these systems don’t exist is silly because the computers are then like the props used by the South Pacific islanders. It is no wonder that they don’t work as advertised.
My final example of the cargo cult metaphor is the institution called democracy. Voting every so often to elect representatives that sit in a great big hall to decide matters of national importance is the front end. The deep backend requires an informed public at a minimum. Even under the best of circumstances, aggregating individual preferences is a risky venture as students of public choice theory will appreciate. (See Ken Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem.)
In the case of India, we have a cargo cult democracy. It looks like one with electronic voting machines and election speeches and manifestos, with pollsters and pundits, with election commissioners and voting stations. Only the deep backend is missing. There is no understanding of issues of substance among the people who vote. Put up a name which is recognizable, and they would vote for or against that name. Promise enough freebies (free electricity, for instance) and they will vote for you, never mind that it may bankrupt the state and that eventually it will impoverish the same voting public. For democracy to work, you need accountability—both among those who vote and those who are elected. In an area where the government is seen as a source for endless handouts by the people, and the leaders look upon their stint in the driving seat as an excellent opportunity to steal from the public, democracy is not likely to work. All the talk about the smart voter is so much hogwash that the mind boggles.
The Indian stock market is crashing. People are voting with their pocketbooks and sending an important signal. The signal, as I see it, is that the Indian economy is spinning around in the bowl and will soon be down the tubes as soon as the flush cycle finishes.
It is all karma, neh?
