What is the basis of our Moral Values?

Hi Anju,
As per my views moral values is the concept that decisions should be based on a pre-existing set of laws and principles -- often contained within a sacred text. To a large extent we are shaped by our cultural setting, and its values imprint themselves on our minds in ways most of us hardly notice. I think I have put some light on the theme of this thread…..please suggest.........:):):)

i suggest you to go through the posts in this thread... your pre-existing set of thoughts are already answered ;)

basis

The basis of our moral values is nothing but our family values and the rules set by society we lives in.
Our parents teaches us what to do and what not to do and the unsaid rules which govern human lives are Moral values.
It gives people the conscience to judge wrong and right.

Hi Poonam , pretty simple and pretty nice definition through the quote , thanks for sharing.

Not to start my mathematical and finance fantasies ( which all of you are so fed up of :( ) , but would you agree that "after" is probably a long run which has stood the test of time. ( My only arguement in favour of this is that i want to reduce the fluctuations on the temporal axis ! :) )

Agree or you have something to counter ?

Regards,
Anil

Well agreed..(thought its safer to agree with ya than getting you started..:p)

Not done :)

@ Anjoo : long is like 1/epsilon , where epsilon > 0 is small!

My friend sent me the bloomberg quote for the day which read:
We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful wht we pretend to be.

How many of you all agree ?

Being 'Just' is Moral

After reading all your views on this post, I still didn't come across this simple and basic reason.

My basis of saying 'Being Just is Moral' comes from our basic decree of life as Human Beings.

We all agree that some all powerful almight creadted us, plus imparting us the greatest power i.e. reasoning(which we all are trying best to imply and practise here:)), to dicide and choose what we become.

As per general perception here being Moral is 'Right' in every way and vice versa.

Then again we can differenciate 'Right' from 'Wrong' only if both exists and it is there our reasoning comes into action to decide and choose 'moral' from 'immoral', 'right' from 'wrong' and 'just' from 'unjust'.

If we look at our history or culture or scripture or any rules in this regard, basic message remain the same 'one should be "Just" in its way of life' to be called as 'Moral' person.

I hope that is why this particuar word is mostly or should I say always associated to us humans not any other creature.

Hi Ankur , i appreciate your saying , but what i could not get was that what exactly do you mean by "just"?

How do youy define it !

Please concretise your term , would be interesting to hear :)

"Just"

"Just" if you see it is all meaningful in itself. it is where we derive 'Justice' and it where we can conclude 'Life is Just' at the end.

Well as already said why anyone need justice because one thinks something 'wrong' or 'unjust' or 'immoral' has done to the person.

So you see 'Morality' and 'Just or Justice' are synonymous.

As for defining "Just" there can two definitions :

1. Generalised i.e. where everyone agrees on some said, written or done rules, values or acts.
2.Personalised i.e. where one who is involved in the situation to be judged agrees, knows and acts as per what he\she thinks is Moral.

so there is no set definition except this basic statement "Being Just is Moral" because it depends on many variable factors.

a solitary being doesnot need 'moral values', he isnt answerable to anyone, he isnt interacting with others and his behavior doesnot affect other beings.

moral values came to be defined because man evolved as a social being and being in presence of others and to work in cooperation and coordination with them needed rules. most moral values have been defined keeping in mind social harmony as the goal.
behavior which adds to social harmony is moral behavior.
(this is my understanding)

Good Topic!!!

On almost every second thread in Jatland, we read about moral values. Is it following the religion or adhering to the customs that makes us moral? Or is it the values imparted by our elders? The meaning of the word "MORAL" has such wide connotations.
Per Merriam- Webster Online Dictionary, MORAL is
1 a: relating to principles of right and wrong in behavior : ethical <moral judgments>
b: expressing or teaching a conception of right behavior <a moral poem>
c: conforming to a standard of right behavior
d: sanctioned by or operative on one's conscience or ethical judgment <a moral obligation>
e: capable of right and wrong action <a moral agent>
2: probable though not proved : virtual <a moral certainty>
3: perceptual or psychological rather than tangible or practical in nature or effect <a moral victory> <moral support>
My moral values are dictated by right behaviour and right action. And right is "win-win" (borrowed from quote by Anilsd) for all involved in the situation.
So, what is the basis of your moral values that shapes your words, behaviour and actions?

(P.S.:If a thread of similar nature already exists in JL, do provide the reference, thank you)

Dear Indu Chaudhri Ji,

Very nice topic for discussion. To me, the simplest definition would be wisdom of differentiating between "Right" and "Wrong" and courage of defending what is "Right"

The problem is "What is Right" and "What is wrong" depends on our perception. So, where do we go from here?

I would say, we should stick to the definition of "What is Right" as given in the constitution of the nation that we live in without manipulating it.

If we feel that there is some thing that is not right within the constitution itself, we should also have courage to change it or at least strength to raise a voice against it (as you say in a democratic society) without "Favor" or "Fear".

Here on this site itself, I have seen, that being a "Jat" is good enough to be right on what we do?

Basis of moral values?
why do we find basis of everything. moral values got no basis, no base. its baseless
i dont know what bases others have written , cant read those big big paragraphs

my basis of my moral values is my mom.whatever she did and taught us is the basis of all the rt and wrong or the difference between paap and punay.

Morality is a term used to bind approval/disapproval to some action amongst a group of people, society, community etc. What may be an action supported by morality for few may be a highly immoral act for others.
Its moral for Muslims to marry their cousins which is not the case with hindus and is considered a highly Immoral act. Aghoris find it justified according to their set of morals to eat human flesh and perform other acts which are considered insane by civilized societies all across the globe.

Real essence of morality is garnered when it is put under trying condition. Let me depict a very simple case here which i was eyewitness to and this was not even very trying condition as well:-

I was en-route Hapur to greater noida by bus. I had to change my bus at sec 37 noida. It was rush hour. To make the condition worse buses were not in abundance as well. Lots of people waiting to hop on the next one. A bus was arriving on bus stop and everyone ran towards it in a frenzy, a middle aged man around 40 grabbed the handle at the door and was running simultaneously. Suddenly he tripped and his hand lost the grip leaving him fall blatantly on the road. To my amazement almost everybody ran over him just to catch a seat. Just One or two including me offered him a helping hand as he suffered a dual blow, first falling and then people running over. I wondered what happened to everybody and is it a moral action to judge a bus seat over human life.

moral

Good quote if understood in short: everything is moving from imperfection towards perfection if we accelerate the moment or helpful in movement that is moral or if we stop or try to stop the movement may not be moral.

Anil tum toh note pad pe type karke paste kiya karo:D Well morality goes hand in hand with self conscience.Self conscience helps us in deciding what is right and what is wrong so ofcourse its directly related to morality.

What I've to say about morality has already been written by other members here. But still...morality in itself is born out of a social context. Being part of society or a group we need to follow certain rules of acceptable behaviour which gradually become the values or the morals. The acceptable behaviour becomes the "right" and the non-acceptable one becomes the "wrong". As Navin ji has said an individual out of any kind of social group doesnt need to bother about morals. So morality is about socially desired behaviour.

But is it that simple? Kohlberg discussed about three stages of moral development and in the final stage of this development i.e. the post-conventional stage a person goes beyond the conventionality of values and define and follow his/her own ethics, which are self-chosen and not dictated by society. Well it is something dictated by the person's own conscience.
