Sex ratio in Haryana

Devender, I see a point in your perspective here. Agree that as people have right to marry out of their choice (inter caste, same caste, within or outside village etc…) so they do have a choice of having a baby gal or baby boy or not having one at all. I think nobody is questioning anybody’s choice here for the want of baby girl or baby boy; discussion is about why getting rid of baby girl for the want of baby boy which leads to uneven sex ratio.

Before I write anything else it’s worth answering your question first about “banning abortion” – as far as I know in both the cases (marrying with one’s own choice OR choice of having a baby gal/boy) Indian constitution doesn’t allow terminating life for whatsoever reason except terminating fetus on medical grounds. Abortion is already a legal crime and it’s banned in India long back.

If someone want a baby girl and the lady conceives a baby boy – should one opt for abortion risking mother’s life just because couple needed baby girl (except for medical grounds)? If a couple wants to exercise their choice selectively, they should ensure it before hand by any means whatsoever (seeking medical assistance, use of technology or apna deshi nuksa jo badde budle bataya kare - “andheri / Chandan” raat ka hasab katab :) ).

You have suggested to use of technology or other fair means – agree but what if these means fail somehow? Somebody having 4 girls and still going for 5th just in hope that it will be a boy this time should also see that it’s their responsibility (as a parent) to up bring them properly, to provide these kids with health and education. In absence of Govt’s facilities, if parents fail to do so, I personally consider this as equal a crime on our behalf –if we are not able to provide proper care to our child/children – it’s better to have no kid or have as many as kids which we can support comfortably. Of course need of the hour is to have least number of children.

It’s a matter of life & death issue first and then the social issue and “Skewed sex ratio & increasing population” are the direct implications, of course equally alarming in nature.

And big question is why a baby boy over baby girl? A few points WHY –

1. Ancestral property inheritance- In our society girls move out of parental family to join their husband’s family and don’t divide ancestral property (though law doesn’t stop them to have their right in property).
2. We live in future – ki budape me maari kaun dekh bhaal karega. Chhori to chali jaagi aagla k ghara, pher mara budapa baraan ho jaga. We spoil our present for the sake of our future. And we observe this future living in general as well.
3. Social Insecurity – Sayani chhori huya pachhe mari society me chhori ka lakdna mushkil ho ja he, maa baap ne din raat chinta hue rah he ak kad eska bya hoga arr kad marri responsibility khatam hogi. Who is responsible for “Social Insecurity” in our very own society?
4. Dowery – It might be changing it’s form now. Now a days people might not take cash/other household items but a simple demand is put to Girl’s family from boy’s family – Chaudhary saab hamne or kuchh na chahiye, bas baarat ki khatardaari theek kar diyo. Baarat ki theek thaak khatardaari karan k chakkar me chhori aala ki “kaach” bahar lakad le he. It takes 7 to 10 lacs to arrange a fairly simple marriage party. Aaalge 2 – 3 saal ka finance gadbada ja he chhori aalya ka je chhokha thaada byot na ho to. Upar te, our wrong notion in society ki chhore aalya ka kad badda ho he – donu thoka ka kad barabar kyun na ho sakta?

Ham maane ya na maane, when come to think of such social issues matter of the fact is that maare samaj me “Daugla pan” i.e double standard he and we talk double standard and live double standard. Period.

Aaj kal independent thinking ka time hai. Yaa toh abortion hi ban kar do on same ground as killing a human being is punishable. Other wise its parents choice what they want Boy or Girl. If Someone want a boy why they listen concern that sex ration is deteriorating.
If its social issue then Same gotra marriage, inter village marriage and many other things are not on same level. Then government and people who are more civilized says its independent thinking of two people. But when some one want Boy its bad, kyon bhai. I Dont even see that some one crying when they have two girls and a boy but what if someone want a boy and they have to gave birth to six girls. Ab population nahi increase hotee. Its indepedent choice that what kind of baby they want. either they have to use modern technic to get that fulfill without burden of population increment or they will use Try and Hit method.

I am having a baby girl and i am happy with that and i know atleast 10 other Jats with same situation.I dont say kill girls just to get a boy, they are equaly good or may be better but i dont want to challenge choice of other people just because sex ration is deteriorating. All people are not same and so are their choices. I had seen cased of 4,5 and even six girls just to get a boy and i will think its better to use modern technology to keep that to two or three childs.

Karnal village sets example in gender equality

Registers ratio of 1,857 females against 1,000 males
Tribune News Service

Karnal, January 16
The sleepy village of Naru Kheri in Karnal district has shot into prominence as a symbol of empowerment with a sex ratio of 1,857 females against 1,000 males.

The figures are incredible in the land of khap panchayats and honour killings. The village is rated the best among 18 villages with a sex ratio in favour of women. It boasts of having sent a woman to the Army and seven to the police force.

The women in the village are bold and refuse to be dominated by their male counterparts. “I have three daughters and all are studying. I want them to excel in whatever field they chose and compete with men,” said a village woman.

Chief Medical Officer Vandana Bhatia said some pockets had shown remarkable improvement in the sex ratio but the wider picture remained grim. In some areas, the sex ratio continued to decline further, which was alarming, she observed.

The NGOs, campaigning against female foeticide and the dowry menace, need to show results on the ground. “It is intriguing that no NGO has adopted a village to make it free from the evils of female foeticide and dowry. Much of their claims remain on paper,” said social scientist Prof Ranbir Singh. Sarpanch Sandeep Narval and former Zila Parishad chairman Prakashwati Narval said all credit went to the residents of Naru Kheri for the change in mindset and they no longer discriminated against the girl-child.

This was one reason why a large number of girls from the village had excelled in sports, they added. Health Minister Geeta Bhukal will present a cheque for Rs 1 lakh to the village sarpanch at a Republic Day function for setting an example in gender equality.

Gender ratio - 2011 Census of India

Census of India 2011:
- Child sex ratio drops to lowest since Independence (914 females / 1,000 males - the lowest since Independence 1947)
- The ratio has declined to 914 from 927 females against 1,000 males in 2001.

Punjab and Haryana, which have traditionally seen low sex ratio, have recorded an increasing trend but still remained at the bottom of the list. Haryana has 830 female children and Punjab 846 against per 1000 male child.

Haryana's Jhajjar (774 females) and Mahendragarh (778 females) districts have the lowest sex ratio

Now Point of discussion for everybody -
Despite of Haryana & Punjab being the amongst the most literate & prosperous states, how come these states lack in gender ratio?

Now Point of discussion for everybody -
Despite of Haryana & Punjab being the amongst the most literate & prosperous states, how come these states lack in gender ratio?
The notions of false honour and medieval mindset prevailing in the Punjab & Haryana hinterland are primarily responsible for the lower sex ratio of female versus male in these two states. Right from the birth, girls are considered a huge liability. Apart from the financial liability viz. dowry etc., the girls have to be protected against the sex related crimes too which in itself is not a mean responsibility in a society where one cannot trust even the closest relatives. Therefore, the female foeticide and other means to have only male child are very much in vogue inspite of preventive measures, demotivation or ethical sermons by government or society.

To some extent, it is a natural phenomenon also and there has never been a stict parity of fifty-fifty between the girls and boys at any given time in the past. But the existing imbalance is alarming and need to be addressed to by the civil society and the government by introudcing some punitive measures against foeticide. Women empowerment and various incentives to make them self-dependent is one of the most effective means to rectify this historical human error.

People are, though, getting awakened but the pace is abysmally low. NGOs and social forums can also play an important role in this campaign.

Though India's worst, Haryana's sex ratio is best in 110 years

CHANDIGARH: Haryana has both good news and bad as far as the state's skewed sex ratio is concerned. First, the good news. As per the data by Census 2011, the state has reported a rise in the sex ratio - 877 females per 1,000 males, the best figures in the last 110 years. The last census in 2001 showed the sex ratio to be 861. Within a decade, the sex ratio has increased by 16 points.

Since the first census in the country in 1901, the latest provisional figures have shown a marked improvement in the state's sex ratio.

But now, the bad news.

Haryana ranks lowest among all 28 states on the sex ratio front. Against Kerala's high of 1,084 females per 1,000 males, Haryana reports a sorry number of just 877.

"In Haryana, the sex ratio of 877 in Census 2011 is the highest since 1901. Among the neighbouring states, sex ratio of Punjab is 893 and of Himachal Pradesh 974," Haryana's Director of Census Operations Neerja Shekhar said.
The sex ratio recorded in the census carried out after every ten years from 1901 to 2001 was 867, 835, 844, 844, 869, 871, 868, 867, 870, 865 and 861.
Though the state of Haryana was created Nov 1, 1966, the sex ratio figures of earlier census includes the districts of erstwhile Punjab, now part of Haryana.
But officials in the state are seeing a silver lining, even though the state's sex ratio figures in the bottom of the all-India list.
"Haryana is one of the nine states in the country in which the child sex ratio (0-6 years) has also shown an increasing trend. In all remaining 27 states and union territories, the child sex ratio has shown a decline over that in Census 2001," an official said here.
"As per Census 2001, the sex ratio of Haryana at birth was 819 females per 1,000 males. However, as per provisional census report of 2011, Haryana has been able to arrest the declining trend. The 0-6 years child sex ratio had increased to 830 per 1,000 males," Shekhar added.
State Chief Secretary Urvashi Gulati said that although sex ratio figures, compared to the 2001 numbers, are encouraging, a lot remains to be done.
With a ban on sex determination tests, health officials in Haryana had conducted over 11,600 searches in private clinics and health centres to see if there was any violation of the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act.
Among Haryana's 21 districts, the best sex ratio has been achieved in the backward districts of Mewat (906) and Fatehabad (903), while the industrialised districts of Sonipat (853) and Gurgaon (861) figure at the bottom.
The Haryana government is attributing the increase in sex ratio to strict implementation of the PNDT Act. Health officials have been conducting raids at private health centres and clinics across the state to curb sex determination tests. The state government has also floated several schemes for the girl child, including the Ladli Scheme, which provides for financial incentives to poor parents who have a girl child.

I have no problem with increasing sex ratio. But naturally more number of males are born.

Even if sex ratio increases, the sufferer will be womens only as 80% women like same 5% men.
