Q. Are they pseudo-secularists or from the Congress party who are doing this?
A. I am not blaming any party, but there are people who want to destroy the image of Gujarat.

Q. Your own people, people from your own party, the RSS, BJP, VHP are accusing you of being a dictator, not allowing people to speak and creating an atmosphere of fear. These are people from your own party, why are they all saying these things against you?
A. I am not aware of such allegations. Even if people have said such things, then it's fine because it's a democracy and people have the right to express their opinion. If anyone is able to hurl allegations at me, then it is itself a good thing.

Q.But what do you think, why it is happening, are they scared of your popularity or fame?
A. I don't think there are such allegations, so naturally I can't tell you the reasons behind it.

Q.There is talk that you will become the prime minister in the future, you are seen as the future prime minister. What will be your top five priorities if you are at the Centre?
A. I am fundamentally a person who works for the organisation and worked mainly for the organisation (RSS). I have been made chief minister in different circumstances. I have not even contested for the post of a school monitor, I have not even contested for panch, I have never been an agent in an election or been a representative at the election booth. I was given this responsibility in special circumstances and I totally focused on the well being of six crore Gujaratis.

Q.Aren't you concerned about 110 crore Indians?
A. If I am working for Gujarat and it's prospering and if five people from UP are getting employment, then I am serving India. If I am doing good work and people from Orissa are sending money to their homes, I believe I am benefitting the country. That is why I don't think of anything besides Gujarat. I have lots of dreams for Gujarat, my entire focus is on Gujarat because if Gujarat is doing well, the nation will do well.

If the provinces function well, then the country also functions properly. If there are good crops or salt in Gujarat then the country will also be benefitted.

Q. But as there are talks and as the BJP is pushing the agenda of making you the prime minister, what will be your top five plans?
A. I don't answer such loaded questions. I don't think of anything besides Gujarat. Six crore Gujaratis are my focus and I want to work for them with the power entrusted upon me by God and I obey the orders of my people.

Q. What do you want to do for the betterment of the 10-12 percent minorities among the six crore Gujaratis? What do you have in mind for the economic betterment of this section?
A. If I have built a road, it's for everyone, welfare is for everyone. I have come out with a scheme called Mukyamantri Amritam Yojna where we have spent Rs 200 crore for the treatment of poor people who are suffering from serious health issues and everyone has benefitted from this scheme.

Q. So what is your concept of India? Do you want to make it a Hindu rashtra? How do you see or how do you want India to be 50 years down the line?
A. I would want India to be self-sufficient and prosperous. The 21st century should be India's century and that should be everyone's dream. I have been working for that. This is our prime goal.

Q. It is said that you are making Gujarat a model, it is a Hindu rashtra laboratory and when you will take the lead you will make India a Hindu rashtra. Where will you place minorities and Muslims in this?

A. First of all, keeping the condition of minorities in India, the minorities in Gujarat are much better off than the minorities of the rest of India and the chance of the betterment of their status is no different from the chance of betterment of Hindus. The nation should be such that it gives equal opportunity to everyone, that is what our Constitution says and even in society and family, equality of opportunity is a must for proper functioning, it cannot function with discrimination. If you like one daughter-in-law and dislike the other, then you are inviting trouble in the family.

Q. But if there are five children in the family and one of them is weak or has some physical disability, or for some reason has lagged behind, then shouldn't he be given extra care?
A. Even our Constitution says that, that is why we have categories like OBC, SC, ST etc. If society will give up the responsibility of the weaker sections, then who will take care of them? For example, if a couple has a mentally-challenged child, then the couple gives extra care to their child, they can't abandon him because they love him so much. But I believe the mentally-challenged child is not the sole responsibility of the parents to whom he is born but he is also the responsibility of society where he is born. It is unfair to say that he is only the parents' responsibility.

Q. According to the Sachar committee report, the Ranganath Mishra report, a report during Indira Gandhi's regime by Gopal Singh, Muslims have lagged behind the population due to historical and societal reasons. They are socially, economically further lagging behind, with progress in society. What do you think should be specifically done for them, there have been steps taken for Dalits and other backward sections and now the reservation is upto 50 percent, but the Muslims are neither in reservation nor in the competition, how will their condition improve?
A. No, it is not the case. Like at my place (in Gujarat), we have OBC and backward class and even I am an OBC. Muslims come under more than 36 OBC categories and they are entitled to avail of all the facilities entitled under this category which are also enjoyed by the non-Muslim OBCs. Today we have schools, teachers, budget expenditure but still we have illiterate people and Gujarat has found out the solution for it. We have initiated movements like girls' education, 100 percent enrollment.

Q. Have you initiated any specific programmes for Muslim-dominated areas?
A. Do you understand what is meant by 100 percent? It means nothing is left behind. We make a group of ministers (including the chief minister), IAS officers, IPS officers, forest officers visit each and every district in June. In total we have a team comprising 900 men to cover different villages. We even have a team for the districts. In total we cover 18,000 villages. We visit each and every house. In 2001 on an average we had 60 percent enrollment rate. As a result of our drive now it is more than 99 percent.

Earlier we had 40 percent drop-out rate and now it has gradually reduced to two percent. Now who has benefitted from these schemes? I don't label people as Hindus and Muslims because that is not my philosophy.
But I believe each and every Gujarati child should get it. If I analyse the schemes then what I enjoy the most is that the turnout of Muslim parents in Muslim district school functions is 100 percent unlike the attendance of Hindu parents in Hindu districts which is around 60 percent.

Q. So, have you conducted any such functions in Muslim districts?

A. Yes, lots of them. I believe that Muslim women are much more aware on this issue on a personal level and also speak on this issue (education). In one of my visits to one of the villages near Dhata, I decided to go to a village which has the lowest education rate. I don't visit villages on the basis of communities, it is decided on the basis of the education rate. When I paid a visit to a village near Dhata, it had 70-80 percent Muslim population, we came to know about the composition when we visited these villages. Three girls wanted to meet me separately. They were from 7-8 standards. I asked the teachers to move out.

When I asked their names I got to know that they were Muslims. They said they wanted to study but their parents were unwilling. I was moved by the three young girls' desire to study which made them approach me and speak against their parents. I asked the principal to make me meet their parents but they were not around, they were poor farmers. I couldn't meet them but I asked my district education officer to meet and convince their parents to let them study. I am pleased to tell you that now they are studying. It happened two years a go. It doesn't matter whether they are Hindus or Muslims, I want children to be educated.

Q. You are right about the over 36 Muslim OBCs, but according to the survey which took place post-Mandal that if there are for example 100 jobs, then there are 1,000 applicants and there are over 150 Muslims applying for jobs but only 100 are to be given jobs and consequently Muslims don't get more than 2-3 seats, most of the seats are taken by the creamy backward layer. That is why it was suggested that the Muslims within OBCs should get 27 percent reservation because they haven't been able to keep up.
A. Our Constitution-makers have deliberated over the issue of reservations, they have debated whether reservation should be given on the basis of religion or not and there was no RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal then...

Q. Yes, Maulana Azad and the rest of the Muslim leaders themselves opposed the reservations.
A. That is why we should try and understand that period.

Q. But it has been 64 years and we have amended the Constitution and learnt from it.
A. No, it is not the same thing. These are fundamental issues. Will a country like India progress like this? I will tell you later about Sachar committee report, it should be studied. You see the condition of the so-called secular states, you will be shocked. We have nine percent of the population as Muslims and we have 11-12 percent Muslims in government, Bengal has 24 percent Muslims and it has around two percent Muslims in government and these are so-called secular states.

Q. But this not a recent phenomenon, Muslims in Gujarat were ahead in business and other fields, it has not happened over the past 10 years.
A. If they were ahead, then why didn't people talk about it earlier, that yes Gujarati Muslims are ahead?

Q. Because earlier Gujarat was not seen as state which discriminates against Muslims.
A. But hypothetically, even if there was discrimination, then how is it possible that even after 20 years of discrimination, Muslims are doing well in Gujarat? If you predecide to take a stand against me then we can't do much about it. Look at the reality. During 1985-95, for 10 years, there was no recruitment. (Former chief minister) Chimanbhai Patel refused to hire even IAS officers. Recruitment happened during my regime. We have six lakh people in government, I have myself recruited around three lakh people.

Q. So, there are 10-12 percent Muslims recruited in your regime?
A. I have never counted and I won't do it in future. My job is to recruit people on the basis of merit without discrimination. If he is a Muslim, Parsi, Christian, it doesn't matter. This is my philosophy. Anyone who has to get it, will get it.

cheating... ye to meri line copy kar li aapne... which is more applicable on you buddy...

Buddy you cant even begin to fathom the time I have spent reading up and reviewing up info on the Gujarat riots and the 84 riots. I have been active on blogging and internet forum circles since 2007. It was one casual lunch-time conversation with an office colleague who was a Modi supporter that made me curious and sent me looking for info. And what I unearthed, not only shook my faith in the govt but also in humanity sometimes.

And you often talk about 84 riots. If you have read enough on it - the eye witness accounts, people's affidavits and foremost the work of HS Phoolka who is the leading lawyer fighting cases of victims and who has personally interviewed over 200 victims and has mentioned it all in his book "When a big tree falls", you would understand the pattern of "planned riots". The petrol and kerosene stockpiles, voter lists in the hands of rioteers, police apathy and support to rioteers, police targetting the affected instead of the aggressors, coordinated attacks are all common elements of both 84 anti-Sikh riots and Gujarat riots. But for that you have to read up enough; which I am afraid isnt your strong point.

Maybe I couldnt covey my response very well as I was replying to 3-4 people at the same time. So let me clarify my response again and take another shot..

How you interpert that i don't consider them as citizen of India ….. i wrote the above line just to high light the fact that they have already divided a country on the name of minority and insecurity …..
You doubt their rights to call themselves Indians. You are blaming them for the division of the country, are you not? But are the current generation, or the generation that faced the riots responsible for it? If anything the grandfathers of the current generation of Muslims refused to believe the Muslim League propaganda and stuck with India instead of going to Pakistan. The ones who did not trust India's secular credentials left in 47 but the ones who remained were INC supporters and stood for India. And yet here you are blaming them for the partition!

If Aurangzeb is the only mughal and as you said a blue blood then why people blame Nazis for the orders of hitler as hitler was the Chancellor and they have just followed his orders … but in India also what you think who were on the lowest level in Aurangzeb's era to execute his orders …those all were converted people …
Although going to Aurangzeb's actions will require another full fledged thread but let me still point out quickly why you are wrong in comparing Hitler and Aurangzeb.

Aurangzeb was a monarch, leading a monarchy while Germany was a republic with elections. So the blame on Nazis which was a full fledged party with thousands of members was a blot on the entire nation of Germany as they voted for the party without any compulsion. We can go into the reasons why they did so, memories of defeat in first world war and so on but that will be going off topic.

And even if you blame the converter people under Aurangzeb for the atrocities on non-Muslims, can you still blame the present generation of Muslims in India? How can you figure out that their ancestors were the one converting people? Actually dont you think the current Muslims could be the future generation of those people who were forcibly converted themselves?

and as per your logic why Rajiv Gandi became prime minister of India after Sikh Riots …… and using the same logic why Modi cant become the prime minister ….. moral grounds is a very broad and subjective term …. and in last 10 years . Gujratis are living with peace … and if he is guilty then let Law takes its way ….

Actually you have answered your question yourself but you do not know it. Rajiv won because he had managed to generate a climate of hate against Sikhs that culminated in 3000 odd deaths and rode on the sympathy wave of Indira's death. Sikhs were thought to have been taught a lesson and Indira was avenged.

Similar is Modi's case. He allowed the riots to happen and then used them to divide the state along communal lines to move almost all Hindu votes towards BJP's side in Gujarat. But he knows that in today's day of information access he cant absolve himself and cant use the same tactics at the national level. So he has deliberately focused on his developmental credentials and sought to distance himself from the riots. His PR machine has worked overtime to spread the opinion that Modi is a god-send for economic progress. Many of the stories of progress have been known to be cooked up or exaggeration. In one of the initial pages of this thread I have posted economic statistics on Gujarat's development that are far different and lets say not as positive as Modi projects. Even noted economists like Shekhar Gupta of JNU have pointed out how Modi's figures for Gujarat's developments are nothing extraordinary and are continuation of his predecessor's works.

And further, you do make an apt comparison between Rajiv and Modi. We all know Rajiv had to pay the price for his hand in the riots and his fate caught up with him. I hope fate doesnt disappoint this time and has something similar in store for Modi.

Please answer my question what matters to you corruption free head with a vision and proven administrative skills ruling this country or incompetent people with very very high pseudo secular values ……

I do not like the Congress. In fact after I read up enough on 84 riots, I couldnt ever vote for congress. I have either voted for Akali Dal (which is BJP's partner in fact) or an independent like Manpreet Badal this time. I want development and corruption free economic and social progress for my country. But do I also want a monster and known right winger who has the blood of thousands and who rode on the corpse of religious harmony in his state on the road to power? Hell no.

Never i never doubted their rights as Indians but your interpretation skill are very strong you can build your view after reading my line … Even my govt is appeasing them for votes by giving them some special Indian treatment then how can i say they are not Indian……. IF you are thinking its a blame then whom you think was responsible for divisions did HIndus demanded for Pakistan oh yes they did ….. I am sorry sir …….. You cannot separate individuals from communities and religions . How can you say that those muslims remained in India were pro India and are not anti Indians. Maximum people those who refused to go to new nation were financially and literally back ward people.

which elections you are talking about 1933 or 1932 more over he owned a personal army cum guards known as SS waffen before those elections . Did he took part in any elections after 1933 then as per your
logic he got the divine rights to slaughter people like your divine monarch Aurangzeb did ….. on what basis you are justifying the slaughter ordered by monarch … Man except ss all the other concentration camps were monitored by Greman Army they were following the orders of non elected dictator and they were not Nazis if you are blaming Nazis for holocaust ….. if you are thinking in this way why Kurdish people blame Sunnies of Iraq for the carange of Kurdish areas ……… again please don't interpret me .. I am not blaming any on just throwing some light on history and trying to figure out how can i save myself and my region if we face the same situation as we did in past its in …. such type of things happened in your muslim dominated areas of India …. If you don't believe then read about Kanpur riots. and I am not blaming converted people they did that ......

I copied this from wikipedia regarding German election :

Federal elections were held in Germany on 5 March 1933. The Nazis registered a large increase in votes again emerging as the largest party by far, nevertheless they failed to obtain absolute majority. Thanks to the success in the poll, the party leader Adolf Hitler - appointed Chancellor since 30 January - was able to pass the Enabling Act on 23 March, which effectively gave him the power of a dictator.

Rajiv Gandhi was killed by a monster which was created by India only … Sikhs has no role in his death. Developmental Credentials …man without doing something why he got elected h 3 times . He never apologized for the riots . Why this PR machine become tyreless for other Chief ministers ,you are right if he can deliberately focus for development in Gujrat then he can replicate this in India also … and In this era of Media no one can cook any thing and Indian media is always skeptical about him . I read you chart and reelpy of Sanjeev busted that.
I don't know about economist shekhar gupta but in know a journalist with the same name ..and he was the one who blamed Gen Singh as a coup conspirator

You are making a grave mistake if you are clubbing individuals in the combined bracket of their community. You are generalizing to a great extent. Blaming today's Indian Muslims for the partition is like blaming all of today's upper castes for persecution of the Dalits. Its not their fault that their forefathers committed those actions. They just happened to be born into that particular family.

And as you said, most Muslims who didnt go to Pakistan were too poor. But dont you think poor people are more prone to propaganda and would have fallen prey to Muslim League's propaganda more easily? So we cant really be sure. We have no way of determining that. So why blame them for partition?

Actually could you explain what you are trying to convey by comparing Hitler and Aurangzeb? They both did crimes against a section of the people they were ruling. I agree with that. Beyond that I do not understand how this comparison is relevant to this discussion. I tried to explain earlier too how its a very vague comparison.

My apologies, the guy is Dr. Dipankar Gupta. He is a sociologist as well as an economist who often appears on tv panels as well. This is him http://www.rbi.org.in/scripts/bs_viewcontent.aspx?Id=2444. I think I confused his name with some one else. You could just google up akeyword like 'Modi's false statistics' and you could see the info for yourself.

The point I was making about RG was that his fate caught up with him. He had a major role in allowing the riots to happen and paid the price in a violent death one way or the other. So one does pay the price sooner or later.

The point about exceptional economic growth of Gujarat under Modi has been proven to be false. Sanjeev didnt bust anything. In fact after I posted economic data followed by data on health indicators, he stopped talking about economics and the discussion solely moved to the riots. So the question of replicating Modi's fantastic economic developmental of Gujarat at the national level doesnt arise, because he didnt do anything special and just continued what was being done previously. And if economic progress is a benchmark than Nitish Kumar would probably deserve a better shot because he had a weak base to work with in a state like Bihar.

Thanks buddy the only thing which i want to say here is we are not selecting best of best in India …we are selecting less bad among worst ... we dont want a holy cow to rule this country one who is ruling not less then a Cow .... we require a shrewd nation head to catch up with the world...... if BJP is right wing party then who are akalis ?????

I too think the same. We can make a less communal person to be PM and avoid Modi. It doesnt have to be from the Congress which as you'd agree is communal in its own way by appeasing minorities. I am sure we can find a person who is like that. I just think that even if Modi becomes the PM as he is supposedly an economic messiah, all the progress will come to naught, if the specter of Gujarat 2002 is repeated at the national level by a person like Modi.

[h=1]22 convicted in Dipda Darwaja Gujarat riots case, 61 acquitted including ex-BJP MLA[/h]
Ahmedabad: Twenty two people have been convicted, but 61 accused, including a former BJP MLA Prahlad Gosa, have been acquitted in the Dipda Darwaja 2002 Gujarat riots case.

On February 28, 2002, an entire family of 11, including two children, were hacked to death by a rioting mob at Dipda Darwaja area of Visnagar town in Mehsana district. The bodies were then set on fire.

Of the 22 people convicted, 21 have been found guilty only of attempt to murder under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code or IPC; none has been convicted of murder under Section 302 of the IPC. A former police inspector, MK Patel, has been held guilty for dereliction of duty. Quantum of sentence is expected to be pronounced after 3 pm today.

The judge gave the former BJP MLA, Mr Gosa, the benefit of doubt while acquitting him.

Charges had initially been framed against 83 accused, including three women, but the court later allowed the application of complainant Mohammad Iqbal Baloch, listing Mr Gosa and the policeman Mr Patel, as additional accused in the case, taking the total number to 85. Later, one accused was found to be a minor and one died during trial.

The Dipda Darwaja massacre is one of the nine cases, including the Godhra train burning case, that was investigated by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on orders of the Supreme Court. It is the second case of rioting where among the accused there are three women who were charged with murder and other crimes. Former Gujarat minister Maya Kodnani and other two women were tried in the Naroda Patiya case, verdict in which is expected next month.

Pending cases will be resolved too... culprits will be behind bars(irrespective to their religion and political parties)..... and innocents will come out clean(Modi will be one of them)...

Too early to praise him for delivering justice. Many cases still remain.

Read again my dear brother... i said "And why are you saying "Finally some justice"... Many cases are resolved till now... and many more will be resolved too... And i trust Modi's Government to support the Judicial Proceedings in every possible way... and that is what he should be praised for!!!"

Pending cases will be resolved too... culprits will be behind bars(irrespective to their religion and political parties)..... and innocents will come out clean(Modi will be one of them)...

Please see key words in bold. As I said, a lot remains to be seen. Lets not absolve him just because a couple of cases have been concluded.

My dear brother, i again request you to read again... I fail to understand why it is so difficult for you (or why you are so rigid) to accept the following simple things...

1. It is not a couple of cases which are resolved... more than 50 cases are resolved till now... and Modi's Govt supported the Judicial System in every possible way...
2. This "will" word reflects the commitment, dedication and surity... and used by only Modi's Govt... Other opt to use words like "may be" or "shall"...
3. We praise for the things/acts which are already done... so I dont see any harm to praise Modi's Govt for their commitment to bring the justice...

Please see key words in bold. As I said, a lot remains to be soon. lets not absolve hum just because a couple of cases have been concluded.

AHMEDABAD: A power surplus state with near 24 hour electricity supply not just in cities like Ahmedabad and Vadodara but in all the 18,000 villages. Now, the Gujarat government plans to further sharply increase power generation from 13,500 MW now to 18,000 MW by the end of the current year.

The Narendra Modi government was able to ensure almost 24 hour electricity supply, especially in villages, by implementing the Jyoti Gram project. Even the Government of India has accepted this as a flagship scheme for the 12th Five-Year plan (2012-17) for supplying round-the-clock, high-quality, three-phase power to all villages.

Commissioned in 2006, Jyoti Gram provides for a separate electric feeder for domestic use and a limited agricultural supply of nearly eight hours a day, continuous and of constant voltage. A recently released Planning Commission document, "Faster, Sustainable and More Inclusive Growth : An Approach to the 12th Five Year Plan", says "the separation of agricultural feeders" in the country will enable villages to get "24 X 7 three-phased power for domestic uses, schools, hospitals and village industries".

As for the farm pumpsets, which require more power, they can obtain "eight hours or more of quality power on a pre-announced schedule." The document underlines, "The programme of feeder separation has to be carried through across the country. Gujarat has achieved very good results by combining feeder separation with an extensive watershed programme for groundwater recharge. Punjab, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh have also moved forward in this direction. Feeder separation needs to be extended to all states, especially where groundwater is extensively used."

The Gujarat government spent Rs 1,200 crore to implement Jyoti Gram by separating 12,000 agricultural feeders from domestic feeders. It brought down transmission and distribution losses from 35 per cent five years ago to 15-19 per cent this year.

Already a power surplus state, Gujarat sold 5,105.43 million units (MUs) to other states last year earning a profit of Rs 1,888.53crore. Last year, the state had sold 5,105 million units to states like Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and Maharashtra. This was approximately seven per cent of total power produced in the state — 68,710 MUs. According to minister of state for power, Saurabh Patel the government sold power at Rs 8.51 per unit to Rajasthan, at Rs 7.70 per unit to Maharashtra and 9.52 per unit to Delhi. By selling these surplus power, the government was giving Rs 3,000 crore as subsidy to farmers.

With new plants planned to come up, the situation would further improve. And, Gujarat is not just planning to have more imported coal and gas based power plants, but is also negotiating with the Government of India for a second ultra mega power plant (UMPP). There has been no looking back since 2004 when the state successfully unbundled the loss-making Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) into smaller power utilities. Smaller set-ups improved efficiency - cutting T&D losses and better plant load factor - helping the firms to make profits.

I don't know how much Modi is doing at ground level. But unlike other BJP leaders, he frequently mentions agriculture and rural development in his speeches.
