US daily the Wall Street Journal has quoted Mr Modi as explaining the challenge of malnutrition in Gujarat thus, "Gujarat is by and large a vegetarian state. And secondly, Gujarat is also a middle-class state. The middle-class is more beauty conscious than health conscious - that is a challenge. If a mother tells her daughter to have milk, they'll have a fight. She'll tell her mother, 'I won't drink milk. I'll get fat'."

jo baat boli hai ye hai to sach hi... ye to roz ka scene to khud humare ghar ka(delhi)... or gujarat kya har jagah ka yahi haal hai... specially cities mai...

or ye to media ki aadat hai ki modi bolta kuch or hai or usko ghuma fira ke dikhate kuch or hain... jab maine title dekha to mugjhe bhi ajeeb sa laga tha... but jab modi ka quote dekha to vo bilkul hi alag tha... ab agar kisi ko is news ke title ke content mai kuch farak najar nahi aa ruha ho to... isme koi kuch nahi kar sakta... poorani kahawat hai "veham ka koi eelaj nahi hota"

ye news to media walo ki vikrit mansikta ka bahot badhiya example hai...

Yes, and Gujarat has girls only.

Plus there's no link of vegetarianism with malnutrition.

But I guess some people will defend anything and forget that this was in bad taste. Once cant link a girl's anorexia with malnutrition.

Swaich,

There is a great link of vegetarianism with malnutrition. If you don't have adequate amount of different varities of food then there are great chances of having deficiencies of Iron, protein etc. Plus some of nutrients which our body needs cannot be served by normal course of meal we have in day to day life. For example, seafood is a great source of Omega oil. Also we have seen a greater change in our diet and activity pattern. People in villages eat more healthy and nutritious food than people in urban places.

Baaki ontopic,

Modi is not a magician. He is a good administrator(I said because he is not convicted in Godhra incident yet). Gujrat has been doing well in the past.

Modi kept the pace of development. But at national level things are different.

Changing country is not one man job. It needs collaborative efforts and time. Things can't be changed in one day.

Country needs substantial reforms in governance which is the biggest problem in the progress of the country.

Once you reform the bureaucracy and change the culture in the bureaucracy things will automatically change.

But lack of reforms and professionalism in bureaucracy is the biggest bottleneck in the overall progress of the country.

Address the root cause and see the result.

While I agree, a non-veg diet provides a greater source of certain essential nutrients, I dont think there's yet research that proves that a vegetarian diet falls so far below a non-veg diet that it leads to malnutrition. There are substitutes for a lot of things found in a non-veg diet. If that wasn't the case, Unesco or the the nation's malnutrition programmes would have been stressing on converting people from vegetarians to non-vegetarians. But the fact is that it is possible to have adequate nutrition even with a veg diet.

Further, Gujarat is rural as well. People in rural areas are hardly figure conscious and not men for sure. The fact of the matter is that alarmingly people have been spending less on food than before. That is a cause of malnutrition rather than any middle class mentality as Modi says. Here's an article that says the same quoting NSSO figures http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...luff-on-malnutrition/articleshow/16033202.cms

Here's an extract:

The survey on consumer expenditure by households shows that in urban Gujarat 60% of the population spends less than the state average of Rs 1,909 per month per head, which is lower than the national average of Rs 1,984 per month per head. In rural Gujarat too, 60% of the population spends less than the state average of Rs 1,110 per capita, which is slightly higher than the national average of Rs 1,054. With about two out of three Gujaratis spending less than the state norm which is itself lower or only slightly higher than the national average, it is a far stretch to call Gujarat a middle-class state.

Another NSSO report, on nutritional intake, shows that the people of Gujarat are eating worse than before, and it is poverty that is causing this. In Gujarat's rural areas, the average daily calorific intake was 1,982 Kcal, slightly down from 1,986 Kcal in 1999-2000, and substantially down from 2,142 Kcal in 1972-73, according to the report. In urban areas, the calorific intake was 1,983 Kcal, down from 2,058 Kcal in 1999-2000, and again substantially down from 2,172 Kcal in 1972-73.

Now, it isnt like this is a big enough deal. There are far larger issues plaguing Modi than malnutrition one. But if you read up enough, this statement shows how Modi is trying to clear all doubts on his performance. Many economists and experts had cited increasing malnutrition figures against Modi's claims of making people rich and the state developed. The malnutrition figures called his bluff. A rich state doesnt have increase in malnutrition levels along with declining spending on food in both urban and rural areas. Even if food habits change and people eat more 'fad' food and less nutritional foods as often happens when incomes rise, the overall calorific intake increases as 'fad' foods like burgers etc are high in calories. But even this calorie intake has gone down in Gujarat. It cant be that people are getting rich but spending less on food and taking less calories. That's impossible. Spending on food is directly proportional to income.

Anyways, I have always maintained that Modi's PR team made more out of Gujarat's development than what met the eye and gave Modi extra credit. But he was always a shrewd speaker in interviews and never made ill-informed statements like these. So I was surprised myself. But even media, true to its style has caught on to this statement more than the Naroda-Patiya judgement which convicted a sitting MLA for riots the first time.

Modi’s Teflon Is Wearing Off

http://www.openthemagazine.com/article/voices/modi-s-teflon-is-wearing-off

In August 2004, I went with a colleague to the office of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in Ahmedabad to meet its general secretary Dilip Trivedi, who was also the Government Pleader of Mehsana district. We were asked to wait outside a room, where a meeting of senior VHP leaders was underway. The discussions could be heard clearly. My colleague who spoke Gujarati told me they were expressing a real fear that the Supreme Court could hand over investigation of riot cases to the CBI, and the VHP was working out a strategy to preempt this. As the meeting finished, we were surprised to see a correspondent for a leading national weekly troop out. My colleague, who knew him, said he was an active participant in the discussion. Eight years later, week after week, I still find him writing pieces praising the rapid pace of development of Gujarat under Narendra Modi.

It has left me with a deep suspicion of all those who attempt to separate Modi’s governance during the riots from his achievements as an administrator. Such disingenuous attempts always begin by a passing reference to the 2002 massacres and end by extolling him.
For one, they are wrong on facts. Modi’s Gujarat has done no better than many other large states, and in fact it has done better under earlier chief ministers. For another, Modi’s Gujarat has managed the unenviable feat of economic growth without alleviating the day-to-day living of its citizens. Its record on basic human development indicators places it among the worst states in the country.
But even if the commentators were granted their falsehoods, the case for separating communal violence from governance while including economic growth is so absurd that it can only be made with an intent to justify the events of 2002. It comes from an intellectual complicity in murder.

The verdict holding Mayaben Kodnani guilty of murder effectively takes away the last fig leaf that has often been cited by such commentators, that no evidence of his administration’s culpability has withstood judicial scrutiny. She was an MLA at the time and led a mob of over 10,000 people that killed 97 people. The facts in this case were never in dispute, the evidence far too strong to be denied, yet Modi made her a minister in 2007.

As an aside, but an important aside, let me note that her case parallels that of Kamal Nath, currently a minister in the Union government. He led a mob of several thousand that burnt Sikhs to death at Gurdwara Rakabganj, a short distance from Parliament. His Doon School friendship with Sanjay and then Rajiv Gandhi saw him being rewarded for murder by being made minister. But the lesson here is not that we are wrong to focus on Mayaben Kodnani and Modi, but that we should also continue to focus on Rajiv Gandhi and Kamal Nath till a similar verdict, guilty of murder, is pronounced.

To come back to Modi, he had recently argued in an interview given toNai Duniya’s Shahid Siddiqui: “Agar meri sarkar ne yeh dange karvay toh usey beech chaurahe par phansi lagni chahiye. Jo log maaf karne ki baat kar rahe hain, woh paap ko badhava de rahe hain. Agar Modi ne gunaah kiya hai to usey phaansi par latka doh (If my government was responsible for these riots, then it should be hanged at a public square. Those who speak of forgiveness are only encouraging such foul deeds. If Modi has done this evil deed, then he should be hanged.)’’

The case for exemplary punishment in such cases is well spelt out by Modi. There is no sense in which the crimes that occurred in Gujarat in 2002 or in India in 1984 can ever be forgotten or forgiven. The conviction of Kodnani is a necessary step. That it should be announced on the same day as the confirmation of Ajmal Kasab’s hanging by the Supreme Court is appropriate. Irrespective of my personal views on the death penalty, the Supreme Court has reaffirmed that what Kasab did was the ‘rarest of the rare’. The attack that he carried out on innocents in Mumbai was born of a sense of acute hatred, was planned and carefully thought out.

In this light, consider what happened in Gujarat in 2002 and in Delhi and several other places in 1984. In neither case was the violence a spontaneous reaction. Mobs were organised and led by politicians, in one case largely owing affiliation to the Sangh, in another to the Congress. The attacks carried out on innocents were born of a sense of acute hatred, and were planned and carefully thought out. Modi is right, the crime that Mayaben Kodnani stands convicted of, and Kamal Nath accused of, is the rarest of the rare. And the responsibility goes all the way to the top. Or why are we asking for Kasab’s handlers?

Swaich,

When you say less spending on food, you should also consider another factor(Hidden) that Gujratis are stingy by nature.

They spend less and save everywhere. Whereas if you go north, say in Punjab, Haryana, you will find opposite spending pattern(Accha Khana peena is always a priority) .

Also the type of food Gujratis have may not have sufficient nutrients(Dhokla, Chat poodi etc).

So this less spending is a specific trait found in Gujratis by and large and could be responsible for malnutrition.

* Note: This is my personal finding. Other's finding could be different.

Swaich,

Malnutrition also happens due to unbalanced diet. Even the families which are well off and spend appropriate money on food may have malnutrition because of the type of the food they have. When you are a strict vegetarian, you need to be very careful with your diet. Because in order to get all the essential nutrients you need to have different varieties of food. Otherwise you will have deficiency in one way or the other.

That's a possibility too and as you rightly pointed out when compared to Northern states. But spending going down when compared to previous levels of Gujarat itself? Are Gujaratis becoming more stingy than before? I find that a little hard to explain based on just stinginess. And rural people, working in the fields will need proper meals. This stinginess might be a factor for urban but rural people can hardly afford to spend lesser on food. Also what about the calorific intake declining? Shouldnt most snacks be high calorie?

Swaich,

I am not debating on that Gujratis are spending less nowadays than they used to. It may be the stereotype about them. I am just commenting on my personal experience. Even Gujratis who have a good earnings tend to spend very less and save everywhere. That's their nature.

Also on the calorific intake, malnutrition also happens when you have an imbalanced diet. That's what I said earlier as well. Even families which are well off and spend appropriate money on food may not be consuming all the essential nutrients.

Swaich,

From the TOI article link you have pasted above:

Cause of Malnutrition:

1. Inadequate or unbalanced diet.
2. Eating a single vitamin in diet.
3. Eating too much calories.

So there may be many people falling in above categories. As you said, most snacks means high calories( That means urban people might be suffering from this). Or people eating a single vitamin in diet or unbalanced diet could be another factor largely responsible for this malnutrition.

A Gujarat court convicted 32 people, including former BJP Minister Mayaben Kadnani and a Bajrang Dal leader, Babu Bajrangi for the massacre of 97 Muslims in Naroda Patia in Gujarat riots in 2002. Without a tacit approval of Chief Minister a minister could not be a party to genocide of this magnitude. Prima facie, Modi’s culpability in the genocide cannot be ruled out and the needle of suspicion points towards him. However, there is one tantalizing paradox. Because of his administrative acumen, Modi’ quotient of acceptability is very high in Gujarat. . He has done a lot to develop the state. But this fact cannot wash off his sins. Hitler was also very efficient and took Germany to the heights, unfathomable by many sister countries in the region for several decades to come. But, Germany was a country licking its wounds after Ist World War. He made Germany a powerful country to confront dominant powers those days. Does it mean that he is to be lionized?

Was reading a comment somewhere on a social web-site which is as under: “Have Gujaratis sold their souls to the Mammon-the god of wealth? Have irons gone into their souls? Do they not suffer from qualms of conscience for the massacre of innocent Muslims who were also Gujaratis? There is a move to project Modi as the Prime Ministerial Candidate of the NDA. I very much wish that this comes out to be true. If whole of the country behaves like Gujaratis and he is the Prime Minister, many would be compelled to think whether this country is worth living or not. However, I am quite confident that this would not happen.”

Last night, Google hangout by Modi was too good. I don't know whether he will become PM or not. But one thing is sure that he set a new trend in Indian politics. People always remember first. I will not be surprised if we will see in coming years more and more direct conversation with people by few more politicians who are honest in their approaches. This event will go down in the history books. Those who missed it, here is the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzUTCXKnmZg&feature=g-all-u

I am not here to defend each and every statement of him. So, please don't quote me after picking out some sentence from his interaction. If anybody has any question, just go to his webpage and ask from him. Hopefully, he will answer.

jisne bhi ye article likha hai... kya vo bhai thodi si research kar ke batayega ki... Modi ke CM banne ke baad Gujarat ko kitni bar best state ka award mila hai? Modi ko kitni bar best CM ka award mila hai? or agar aadhe se jayada bar mila hai to ye kaise bola ki "gujarat has done no better than many states" and "earlier CM's were better than modi"... or agar ye boli gai batein sahi hain to... centre govt(congress ruled) ne paise le ke award diye hain kya apne sab se bade dushman ko??? or agar award dene mai koi dhandlebazi nahi hui to award jeetne wala, na jeetne walo se better to hoga hi... or agar vo better hai to ye negative propegenda kyon failaya ja ruha hai kisi ke bare mai???

Modi dont need Teflon, facts speaks for him.
