C for Congress, C for Corruption, C for Communalism and C for Crime

For Democracy to grow it is very important to have a strong opposition but in our case we neither have strong opposition nor strong government. If govt was strong they would have gone for vote on day 1 on FDI but they waited to buy/convince/pressurize SP/BSP to abstain and then went ahead. People voted SP/BSP to put there point in parliament not to abstain from it. But as I said earlier ye sab khel satta aur raj ka hai.

oooo ...................lillee dawat(ink pot) choodd they pndayaa

Shiela Dikshit says Rs. 600 per month is sufficient to feed a family of 5.

This goes on to prove that the Congress has lost touch with reality. This is the development model of the Congress party where a person can feed himself with Rs. 4/day. This country is indeed progressing.

Andher Nagari Chaupat Raja (Oops! Maidam)

600 is surely not enough but I would rather look at the benefits of the whole scheme of direct cash transfer to poor and needy rather than finding such nuisances.

Vikas i do agree there might be other aspects to this scheme otherwise Rahul would not have said that Congress can win next two general election on basis of this scheme if implemented properly

"Shiela Dikshit says Rs. 600 per month is sufficient to feed a family of 5" , i dont think this one is such nuisances otherwise it should not be coming from a CM who has been CM for more than a decade now. Either something is wrong with CM here or scheme.

I said that 'For democracy to grow we need strong opposition but in our case i.e. India unfortunately we dont have strong opposition as well as strong ruling regime', n democracy here means any democracy not only India ;)

Besides an election gimmick, which most parties practice, this direct cash is not only just nuisance but rather a criminal nuisance. If your beloved regime is thinking that they can actually extend the scope of vote for cash from the parliament to the nation then they need to do some pranayaam.

Off late, I have been dealing with labors, and whenever I rewarded them (expecting it to be a motivation for their hard work), most didn't reported to work the next day. With that extra reward, most of them had an extra glass of alcohol!

These days one can easily, in most parts of India, earn 600 in days and 6000 in a month by doing simple labor work. So what's the real objective of providing these Rs 600? Does your beloved regime want the poor to have that extra alcohol or bidi or gutaka and then go to the hospital with their BPL cards for free treatment?

Do some pranayam and think about the kind of strain it would be putting on the system?

Illiteracy gets worse when illiterates get money. Give them facilities, food, shelter, clothes etc but not money.

It seems those in the beloved regime are left with little time from the scams to think as to why all these reputed charitable organisations do not provide cash as a relief.

I agree on that note on a philosophical point but reality is govt pays(be it any party led) directly in every state and Aadhar is a mechanism that ensures only those who are real beneficiaries get the money and not the middlemen.

It seems your beloved ones are left with little time from the scams to think as to why all these reputed charitable organisations do not provide cash as a relief.

P.S. I hope you learn some manners of participating in a debate, this is not a you vs. me fight or a fight at all.

While the timing of the move can be questioned, it does have its benefits. Here are a few I can think of. I am sure there would be others -

1. Bypassing PDS - The public distribution system is rotten, corrupt and beyond repair. Kerosene and grains meant for BPL families are routinely siphoned off by unscrupulous traders and govt. officials. This cash transfer will by pass the PDS system and directly deposit the benefits in the needy's account.
2. System Efficiency - Depositing money directly makes for an efficient system as the inefficiencies of the system - delays, corruption, under utilization etc. are checked. If made possible to be implemented at a large scale, it will also save money spent on setting up the PDS infrastructure

Now, I know an illiterate could very well the spend the money on alcohol as you pointed out. But the govt. cant decide what he should do with his money. To draw an analogy, an illiterate also has the right to vote. We can argue that since he isn't educated he cant use his vote wisely, in the same way as he cant use his money wisely. So would the govt. also decide where he will cast his vote? If we can trust an illiterate to do as he pleases with his vote, we can certainly trust him with his money.

Another thing, like an illiterate can spend on alcohol, he could also use the money on something beneficial. We cant assume it will all be spent on wasteful expenditures.

So overall, I think it is a good idea provided no inefficiencies like those in the PDS creep in. The bank babus handling money shouldn't be corrupt and should allow the money to be handed over without hassles.

Think a bit deeper, had the family been wise enough to use the money wisely, they wouldn't have been living a life below poverty.

In a poor family, only children, a baby's mother and a sick person need relief, and what that person needs is food, medicine, shelter and proper guidance.

A "beg" makes the handicapped more handicapped than what he/she is!

Also, with direct cash, how would the government ensure that the money would reach only the needy and there would be no middleman?

A family with healthy having fertile lands (enough to support a family of 2-3 but may be not of 5-8) and healthy folks also have BPL cards. How would direct cash remove them? How would direct cash stop letting out the BPL cards to more and more Bengaladeshis?

Inefficiencies are not just one kind, they are in plenty. What needs rectification is the entire system not just the modes (of the system).

About the bold - I dont agree. Some people are born into a poor family and irrespective of how hard they try, they cant jump up to higher social and economic levels. This could be due to a lack of opportunities, resources or simply circumstances.

I can see your point around not providing for free and doling out freebies, but what about reducing corruption?

Agreed with "some". What I mean here is "most".

Yes, corruption would decrease with aadhar. However, that's not the objective of the relief package.

India and Israel (Hindus & Jews) are true friends in this World. Both are Long Live.

राजपाल जी यहूदी तो सबसे बेहूदी कौम हैं धरती पर .....वैसे आपने सही कहा दोनों सच्चे मित्र हैं ;)

Its needless to debate about semantics of 'more' and 'some', since these are figurative words. We dont have figures to back our statements and there's no way either of us can prove it.

Actually, this move had been doing the round of south block for quite some time. Many noted economists including Swaminathan Aiyar had proposed this move many years back. Again, the timing can be questioned as you mentioned. But given the limited rolling out of the benefits, I wonder if it will actually sway voters.
