Many wonder why even forward-looking politicians fall in line with khap panchayats and kowtow before them. Many term it shocking, ridiculous and backward.

But I realised the truth nine years ago when I had to seek police protection to recover my beloved. "Some of her relatives have hidden her and they can forcefully get her married," I heard from her neighbours in Hisar.

It's normal in such circumstances in Haryana when parents marry off their daughters immediately to avoid the marriage of choice. With the help of my journalist friends and after consistent efforts, finally I came to know about her location. We rushed to the nearby town, where she was kept virtually under "house arrest".

As I had "strong" inputs about her "kidnapping", I contacted the SSP of the area. Generally, it's not easy to contact such a senior officers in such cases for a common man. But being a journalist helped.

I gave a written complaint to the police station, talking about about our love affair and my apprehension about her forcible wedding. On the orders of the district police chief, a team of over a dozen cops raided the home where the girl was housed. But I was asked to stay far away to avoid any clash. When, my girl friend insisted on my presence, I was called at the house. Her relatives were very angry, terming me responsible for their insult. She told me that she was not brought here for forcible marriage but they were just trying to convince her not to marry me.

Next day, I saw the headline of local newspaper "Dekhi na aisi diwangi", which described the entire drama despite all my efforts that nobody cover my story. After a few days of the incident, we almost ran away and got married in an Arya Samaj temple without informing her family. It took eight years to pacify her parents but not completely.

The objection from her family sounded ridiculous. "We don't have a problem with you. But it's the caste, that is the only hurdle," said her angry brother, when he came to know about our relationship. It was the first time when I realised the deep-rooted caste system promoted by the self-styled bodies like khaps.

Back to the main issue. Politicians understand this deep-rooted caste and gotra system and feel that they can win over the hearts of people by supporting the khaps. "Off the record", these politicians admit that firm action should be taken against the khaps, if they take law into their hands. Sometime, they even term them "outdated". But, "on the record" they term these khaps as NGOs. The argument of their sympathiser politicians and khap leaders is simple: khaps don't order honour killings. It's true in many of the cases that they don't openly order honour killings. But the problem is that they create such an atmosphere that the brother kills his sister and the father is forced to kill the daughter just to save the "honour" of the family.

In my case, my aunt (bua) boycotted the reception party. Angy over my intercaste marriage, she told my father, "No body will attend your party." But we did not face much resistance in organising the marriage party in my village as my father is a former sarpach. It was the first marriage which was celebrated in my village, which is one among the biggest villages of Haryana. It's true in most of the matrimonial cases. Khaps or any caste panchayats take action only when the family is either poor or not influential. But we heard some people saying about our marriage: "They (we) have voilated the social norm."

In fact, they were not against my marriage but they were apprehending that their sons or daughters may also follow the same practice. "Bhai teri to koi bat nahi jab kya hoga tab bebe bhe teri tarah shadi karegi (It doesn't matter in your case but what will happen when sister will also follow the same practice)?" asked one of my cousins. And for their surprise, my sister also followed the same path and chose a boy outsite our caste. When some jats objected, my father again took a bold stand and said, "Jab jaton ke sabse bade leader Chaudhry Charan Singh (former PM) ne apane bacho ki shadi dusari caste me kar di to main kayon aitraj karun (When the tallest leader of jats, former PM Chaudhry Charan Singh, married his children in other castes, why should I object)?" Some of my family members again boycotted the marriage party.

Again back to the main issue. Many of the politicians don't agree with the khap people. But in public, they support the khap people to gain the sympathy of the "common man". Politics of convenience.

Read what is highlighted (in bold and underlined).

In the whole story, if anybody ´objected´ to his inter-caste marriage- it was either his relatives or his Girlfriends´ family. In fact, his story proves otherwise- that there was no pressure from the Caste-Khaps but only ´obejction´ from the families involoved in the marriage!!

Am I missing something here? If I go by Mr. Satyendra´s conclusion (of understanding Mr. Siwach´s action- his being anti-khap), then defintion of a Khap is: A group of people consisting of Mr. Siwach bua, his cousins and His girlfriends parents. Is it the case? Please check with him, what is his idea of a Khap!!
Well, there is tiny catch that his BUA could be a khap leader or his GF´s parents might be khap leaders But even in that case.. these ´khap leaders´ were acting in ´individual´ capacity NOT through a khap-Panchayat (where 100s of ppl gathered to raise objection).

As far as my understanding goes, khaps are against intra-village marriages or same gotra marrigaes NOT the inter-caste. Some of my friends had inter-caste marriage. No furore. no Khap objected to that. and swell, neither did their parents.

I read above posts realized that Mr. Sukhbir Siwach is being criticized for anti-Khap views. And after reading his love story I totally agree with him and his actions . Good to know that his family also supported him.

Satyenra ji, what in his story convinces you that Mr. Siwach has valid reasons to be anti-khap? Seriously, i am interested in learning your deduction theory!!

I have highlighted one statement in RED that might have some merit (debatable). Rest everything is useless ranting. Bina sir-paay ki fekan laag rya se yo!!

Without any proper reasoning or example or any evidance Mr. Siwach accused Khaps of being anti-Poor. This is soo true to the prevailing media trend- if you want to score brownie points, accuse targeted party of being anti-underdog, [Where underdog ,more often than not, are: Dalits, Poors, and Women (they overlap at times e.g, a poor dalit women)]- and Bingo you have some fans!!

His story in bullet points:

1. His inter-caste Marrige was´ojected´ by his relatives and girl´s parents.

2. Above point 1 means Khaps are anti-poor (weaker section of the socoety).

3. And hence: I, Mr. Siwach, will always use my position (of a jouranlist) to demean Khaps at every possible opportunity.

4. And Satyendra says: I can ´undersatnd´ Siwach´s sorrow.

5. I , really really, want to say: PLEASE, TEACH ME TOO this deduction theory.... anybody? !!

Where in this article , by Mr Siwach, is there a single reference to Khap Panchayat meeting, or a discussion, or a decision.

Which Khap was it?

Mr Siwach does not say?

Perhaps because he cannot .

Can some one invite to this group, to enable him to discuss his writings? Let us see if he shows up.

The tragedy is that so many of our own community are ready to believe, anything that is written against their community.

Siwaich article

Siwach article is quite misleading.

He will get away with it, because of TOI editorial policies.

The facts are quite otherwse.

Jats as a group/community, have not objected to intercaste marriage. Ther is a syaing ' Jat ke aayi, jatni kelayee'

i.e ' She came into the jats( got married into the jats) and became a jat.

There has also never been any discrimination against, the lady and her children were accorded full rights of the community, including inheritance.

This ran contrary to the practices in other Hindu communities, where offspring of such marriages were not treated on par, and were referred to as ' doghla' etc.

Those interested, and I hope many are, will take the time time to educate themselves, with the historical material here.

In this case the girl's family objected to her marriage to Mr Siwach. So did Mr Siwaich's relatives.

That is their right and privilege.

What does that have to do with the community at large?

Mr. Siwaich has some explaining to do.

What's wrong with this guy? Just look at this assertion and when it comes "It was the first time when I realised the deep-rooted caste system promoted by the self-styled bodies like khaps." Being a journalist, he still realised the deep-rooted caste system only when it came to his marriage! Was he sleeping through Mandal agitation or he doesn't know how people vote on caste lines! And then he just mentions Khaps in the same breath. Does he know about the caste situation in South India? Are there Khaps there? Tam Brahms are very conservative about marrying within their caste, and they are probably the most educated community and have no Khaps. Even within themselves, they have lots of sub caste angles. Can marry X, can't marry Y. The deep-rooted caste system is a reality in every corner of India, it is not something that should dawn to him because his in-laws were not accepting him.

It is also funny how he keeps giving examples (evidence) of how the girl's parents didn't agree or his bua boycotted and then jumps to conclusion about Khaps' roles. Whether Khaps have a role or not is debatable. But if you are taking the position that Khaps are behind some issue, then atleast give evidence to that. Don't give us story from Ramayana and conclusions from Mahabharata.

Satyendra- Let's not stereotype people as pro-Khaps and anti-Khaps. I personally see myself as neither. When I criticised Sukhbir Siwach, it is for his shoddy work. I have criticised Khaps as well. You can't justify irresponsible journalism saying it is all for a good cause.

I have invited Mr Siwach to join us, by attempting
to post a comment/invite on his blog.

http://blogs.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/khaplandtales/

Not unexpectedly, the comment section is moderated by him, presumably to ensure that only comments favourable to him are posted?

Let us see how sincere he is?

Ravi Chaudhary

Ravi,

If we see all the comments on his blog are full of Jat Bashing!!!!

Why are we giving so much importance to this Siwach???Let him do his blogging for TOI!!!!

He writes animal tales from Jatland about Mirchpur what about Jadaul in UP where Jats & Muslims are on receiving end?

Best way to become popular is to take contrary view ... Thats what this guy is doing.

Will govt act fast to stop khap terror?

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...t-to-stop-khap-terror/articleshow/6128240.cms

After terrorising the youth not to cross the obscurantist social boundaries on marriage drawn through their deadly diktats, the khaps are now having a grand congregation at Meham Chaubisi Chabutara in Rohtak on July 17. The point of discussion -- seeking lowering of marriage age for a girl from a legally prescribed 18 years to 15 years and for a man from 21 years to 17 years.

The mahapanchayat will be attended by representatives of around 600 khaps of all castes and communities, including Jats, Rajputs, Sainis, Gujjars and Dhanaks, claimed Om Prakash Mann, who is the Haryana president of All India Jat Mahasabha. The social expert in him also felt that lower marriageable age would help prevent young couples from eloping. That is, they would be married off by their parents even before they were mature enough to choose someone as their life partner and think of eloping.

For Mann and his ilk, here is a brief sketch of the history of the gradual increase in the marriageable age of girls:

In 1884, 22-year-old Rukhmabai waged a lone battle against child marriage and refused to go to her much older husband Dadaji Bhikaji to whom she was married off in 1873. She even wrote in Times of India attacking obscurantist elements and built up public opinion. Her efforts and the death of 11-year-old Phulmonee of marital rape in 1890 forced the colonial government to raise marriageable age of girls from 10 years to 12 years in 1891.

Social reformers realised the grave danger to women from child marriage and pregnancy-related problems. Led by Harbilas Sarda, they campaigned relentlessly and succeeded in making the government enact the Child Marriage Restraint Act in 1929 (popularly called Sarda Act after the chief campaigner) that made marriage of a girl below the age of 14 years an offence. The 1929 Act underwent amendments in 1940 and 1978 raising the age bar to 15 years and 17 years respectively.

But these did not protect girls from being married off much earlier than 17 years, especially in the hinterlands, as a National Family Health Survey of 2005-06 told us that 45% of women aged between 20-24 years were married before the age of 18. In 2006, the government enacted the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act providing stringent punishment to anyone who married off their children before the prescribed age -- 21 years for a man and 18 years for a woman.

It's hard to expect the gotra, community, village and caste hardened Mann and khap elders to spare a thought and understand the wrenching struggle of Rukhmabai, the mortal agony of Phulmonee and the singular efforts of Sarda. But would the government not be regarded as insensitive if it doesn't stop such mahapanchayats from even discussing ways and means to lead society to the dark ages when men used to be masters of their wives.

The government has been preparing drafts of a law to deal with khap panchayats which seldom flinch in ordering killing of youngsters who elope and get married. The ministries headed by P Chidamabaram and Veerappa Moily even had a close look at the idea of bringing an ordinance to rein in khap panchayats.

True, a law or an ordinance needs to be discussed and debated before being put in place. But it is not always possible to have a wider discussion when the problem is getting out of hand. So why not immediately bring in a law that would deter khaps from signing death warrants? One can always keep debating the provisions and if necessary amendments can be made.

Prevention of child marriage was one of the objects which had made the Supreme Court on February 14, 2006 (in the case Seema vs Ashwani Kumar) direct compulsory registration of marriages. The objects, which the government will do well to consider, were:

* prevention of child marriage and ensuring minimum age of marriage

* prevention of marriage without the consent of parties

* checking bigamy and polygamy

* enabling married women to claim their right to live in the matrimonial house, maintenance etc

* enabling widows to claim their inheritance rights and other benefits and privileges which they are entitled to after their death of their husbands

* deterring men from deserting women after marriage

* deterring parents/guardians from selling daughters/young girls to any person including a foreigner, under the garb of marriage

Respected Hemant Hooda Ji.
We respect sharing news at Jatland and also respect your rights to post any material here until it is not objectionalble in terms of vulgarity/obscenity/relevance.

It will be more beneficial for the portal and our members if you put forward your own opinion as well with news and articles you post. Mere copy pasting news/articles does not reflect you opinion and I am sure members will be more interested in your point of view rather than artilces/news.

Ravi Ji has also aksed the same thing from Satyendra in one of his posts. Simply putting forward someone else's views is not going to help us when the writer is not available to disucss further/answer question raised by members.

To add to above, I would like to remind mr siwatch that caste system was never permoted by jat community, even earlier days, jats were marring in other castes including so called lower castes, secondly, I always said that if families concern donot want, no khap, panchayat or caste promoters can kill such couples, I know hundreds of jats rich and poor, who married their children in other castes but khap raised no issue directly or indirectly. I have read views of siwatch to only & can say neither he knows the entire social/khap system nor being a jat, correct on his part to express irrelevent views. I suggest to mr siwatch that even if he wants to air his personal problems or views on the subject, he should do it at some community forum, it would be batter for him as well as for the community. regards
