I fully agree with you. Men dominated society is ours and more so strong Patriarch frame work is ours.

Answer is not simple

Anjana ma'm, your question is not so simple to be answered as the issue in question is very complex and there is no short cut or quick fix solutions available. There are two prominent issues associated with your question:

Firstly:How the females get treated and had been treated in past: There is a saying and i quote," Responsible people always suffer in the hands of less responsible people." Unquote. I agree with you that fairer sex has not been treated well by our society since ages and continued to be treated equall badly till date but have we ever stopped and pondered as to why it is so? Basically a female is a producer and nurturer[ a unique and tedious responsibility] and as such they have almost entire stake in the rearing of the children, minute by minute...second by second as compare to men who might be an earning member of the family but his physical contribution in that regard is very-2 limited. And if that be so..whatever happens in the house and around there, the responsibility falls on the women and she is squarly blamed for everything she does or the children do.....so many times these poor souls get abused and thrashed because of the wrong doings of children, this is because since ages the RIGHT TO GET ANGRY HAS BEEN GIVEN TO MEN and women are suppose to keep quite when men lift the sky on their heads....THIS NEEDS TO BE CHANGED...HOW TO DO THAT..IS IN ITSELF A DIFFERENT QUESTION.

Ghar ki izzat is associated with women.....If she does something what men do every second.....she is not a straight or chaste and needs to be punished........For example she is not suppose to smoke and if she does..she is of loose morals {I am talking India please} THERE IS HELL LOT OF PRESSURE ON THESE POOR SOULS ALL THROUGH THEIR LIVES AND THE BURDON OF WHICH MAKES THEM SICK AND FRUSTRATED. They suffer in silence without raising their voice becuse if she does that...GHAR NAHIN BASENGGE. So tell me what should she do? Throw the children in a well on the name of liberation or stand for her rights and fight with uncompromising men..........Choice is tough and tougher still is the course as the choice she has to make have terrible consequences in either case and hence this delimma keeps her going in an unknown vivid direction without any clear line in the sight.

Then there are few so called educated sisters of ours who preach a route to women..which is not only unrealistic but un treadable by the majority. What they say is total liberation and TIT FOR TAT philosophy. That does not work at all. We the MEN and WOMEN have to understand that God has made us differently to suit the different kind of roles and hence demanding a paraty with men in itself is very vague and unrealistic demand. We have to search that line of EQUAL RIGHTS some where through the mutuality of the roles of life being performed by each sex. Let us not stand on the roof tops and shout for the equal rights. It is a social problem and thus has to be adressed in each household and not on the streets. Does't it appear funny that by passing a bill in parliament....equality in all respect will be distributed by weight and measure. Sorry there is nothing like that. Education is the key here. Yes indeed it is sad that women are badly treated.

Secondly: In the next part the problem will be...What exactly women want and how? Yes this is the outcome of your question. What kind of equality women want? As per me Women are much more responsible and sacrificing...and hence it is the MEN who need to do a lot to bridge this gap...What i mean is that Women are way ahead of men here. I for one salute the women for their singular devotion and sacrifice in keeping families afloat and Happy. I see no quick fixes and no clear lines demarketed for men and women as regards to their liberation.Total liberation is a myth and impossible proposition. Yes women need to be treated with love and due respect...if this can be given by men then a lot will be achieved BUT still can this happen universally on the tick of a pen??

Anjana it is a very complex issue and as such needs to be tackled at various fronts. Thanx for the poser dear.

What to talk of mortal being, even our so called Gods have not treated women folk with dignity.

1. Seeta definitely deserved better treatment than what she got. It were her two sons Luv and Kush who finally challenged the might of Rama and brought him running for Seeta. No wonder sons got importance over daughters through such acts.

2. Great Krishna was no better when it came to dealing with Radha and settling for Rukmani.

3. Peace loving Budha was no better either when he left Yasodhara and her son Rahul sleeping. I wonder how good son Rahul was..

4. Lord Indra is known for misusing Apsaras for his Earthly missions.

I don't really know at what stage this ill-treatment of women started. Women certainly commanded much more power and attention during Mahabharat period, even though Draupdi was put on stake. Still it was Darupdi who settled scores with everyone. One often wonders whether its Indian subcontinet where the women have this problem or its all over the world. Apparantly western world might look like a better world for women, but little insight tells a different story. Indian subcontinent is the only part of the world where women enjoy maximum political status. Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh all had woman prime ministers/ Presidents. What a paradox it might seem, but this is what the truth is.

This question is invalid as it doesn't have any proper answer, coz every coin has two sides.

I would like to ask one question from all the jatlanders that if a man ask any question (even it can be very helpful for the some of them) he hardly recieve few replies and if a woman ask any stupid question or a question asked by any (man/woman) regarding actresses like mallika saharawat etc. gets more replies then required, I think women get more attention and care then men. What u say?

This is the irony my friend of these poor creatures called women. Though they get all attention, still they face all problems. May be they get attention for all the wrong reasons..And..don't call a question stupid if you can not contribute anything...

RKji, I agree there has been sex based partiality in all ancient cultures but Indians were better than other civilization of that time... plz don't draw conclusions from selective obeservations... interested readers plz read

Ranjanaji, aapki baat theek hai, rather than saying 'we should do this and that' I will to whatever I can atleast at personal level to improve situation by influencing close ones and spreading my thoughts on sex-equality, if everybody does that at personal level it will be much better.... I am doubtful how effective these discussions can be in really improving the situation, major part of victim/culprit of sex-prejudice don't even have access to Jatland I guess...

The single most important factor for the women is financial independence (and that
often happens to be closely tied to education of course). Help them achieve that and
a lot of the issues we see in our society with respect to women should be mitigated.

There isn't much point in trying to change attitudes alone. "That just don't do it,
ma maaan". Show them the Mooooooolllaaaaaaaaaahhhhh (and here I am not
talking about those dhaadee waaalaas :D but I am talking about CASH), and we'll
have a whole new social dynamic (which we do already see in the metros
somewhat).

Of course, when that happens, be prepared for a lot more divorces, lesbians, single
moms and so on. That will be the price of freeing the women ! But I think
it will be worth it.

Meanwhile if some of our women can't wait a few generations for this to be realised,
migrate to the US/Canada/Australia. It is relative heaven for women.

Agreed! I guess everybody else will agree that financial independence is way to go. Now what we do within our scope in this direction?... plz send me a check of 100$ I promise to spend it for girls so that they are more financially viable. PJ?... ha ha;))))
BTW aajkal ladkiyan bhi kum nahi hain, some of them know very well how to make use of both "independence" and as well as "dependence" which way the situation suits.
So "who is afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
"No one, atleast I am not!"

A touching Note

well, the question u hv asked seems vry difficult to answer.I hv myself seen several incident where a girl is kept in several restriction and boundaries and despite of being intelligent she is never given the same opportunities as her Kin.she being small is never allowed to take decision and when she reliazes that it's already too late.Atleast what a least parents can do for their daugter is to make them educated and finanically independent. you people know their is a old saying that charity begins at home so if u people see any kind of discrimination it a time to speak out, to raise ur voice against this ignorance.I hv come thru people who teach their son in one of the best schools but when it comes to the girl nobody wants to waste their money on her so even a school near home is ok for them, and u know what the worst is even if she doesn't study it doesn't matter atall to them but if their dear son don't study he is going to get all the bashing from dad and mom.really pathetic.
what can i say more, said really enough!

And then there were two...

“aapki najro mein ladki ki kya ahmiyat hein.ladki jaise ek packet hein jisse jisne chaha kharida aur chalta bana.ya fir jo koi jo chahe wohi kare us packet ke saath yeh to uski marji hein na kyonki usne kharid liya hein usko.”

I don’t agree with you Anjana, not in the least! To allow such self-deprecating ideology to preempt one’s happiness and to even remotely suggest women are a marketable commodity in this day and age is a suicidal thought! One is as ‘important’ or as ‘insignificant’ as one makes one to be. No one can do anything to you (let alone buying you) without your consent. But you see therein lies the key… there is tendency in all of us to honor social codes at all costs, because that’s how we were always taught. It takes courage to scratch the surface and dream beyond one’s limited horizon. Perhaps you are referring to the cliché about the woman being the ‘sacrificial goat’ to please everyone, be it society or the immediate family, without realizing what’s at stake for her own future. Why does she do that? For two reasons, either she is gutless (a coward) and worries about repercussions and or failures; or ‘pleasing others’ outweighs her eccentricity in the book of virtues! Social customs shouldn’t impinge on one’s civil liberties to the extent that lifelong important decisions are forsaken. To confront a rigid community that asks for larger than life sacrifices is well within a woman’s right. As it is, a woman by her very nature nurtures everyone around her and in the process compromises a lot of personal happiness, but to willingly allow someone else to hand write her destiny is nothing short of self-destruction. Somewhere, somehow, at some miniscule level even that humble, meek and uneducated woman has to begin to question the purpose of her existence. But if she herself is clueless God have mercy on her! Or shall I say oblivion is bliss? I am not going to ramble too much on this except to convey one message, “what you make of your life is your own responsibility” and you alone are accountable for your successes and or failures. And remember, to succeed, one does not necessarily need to travel to the moon; success can be measured in enjoying simple civil liberties like being able to travel just around the corner without having to answer to someone. Failures too are part of life, I would much rather fail as a human being; accept my shortcomings than to cry wolf at every hardship in my life and blame it on the entire womanhood. Oh, it’s me again God… pathetic, miserable woman!

What, men? Well men are from Mars, let them be…

A girl get married devote her life for family, even tolerate bad and still remains good. This situation is worst than a life imprisonment.

Even before marriage the things are conjusted to the maximum.

Our society has fixed a track for a girl. In most cases she has to go on the same track in her life but its her who keep on going without any complains.
Thats the only route which makes her adorable (otherwise not) in the eyes of the society.

Got to say these girls are the most powerful creatures of the universe.

Restriction and no end to the restriction ! Like a bird in a gold cage and in some cases a bird in a filthy cage. But everything seems to be a cage.

Its a cage coz there is no trust. And why dont we include the suffering of a man. Yes he suffers too as he is always attached with woman but stil doesnt give freedom.

A man suffers like a woman but still keep the strings in his hands which is a big show off of masculanity.

People got to know how to trust a relation and trust is not imposition or compromise.

People have to live life staying together rather than spending life together but not living together.

Gender related problems emerged in dawn after Adam and Eve when trust took the back seat.

Not trusting wont make things better but trusting will definitely make the things better coz there will be no cage.

Its important for these fathers , mothers, husbands, brothers or whoever, to trust their female relations and give them some space to do something in personal & professional life as a humans and an identity. Law cant enforce it, society wont tell it, degree wont teach it and its all about living it yourself. ‘Trust’ will be a trend and faith in coming years coz people will be helpless and they will realise what life is.

‘Trust’ it sounds like philosophical thing but not that practical for our society.
But when everything else is tested and we know the results. This is what we need to try, wont fail for sure!

I'm not too clear in what context you brought in 'trust' here. Perhaps, it is a good thing to have but I don't think it is going to solve the diverse set of
problems that our women face in our society.

I think that the singlemost underlying theme here is the subjugation of
women. That is no different from subjugation of the poor, or of "lower
castes" or of "inferior races" and the like. Human beings by their very nature
try to subdue and control and take advantage of those that they can.
I think it is an inherent trait in us. That is the way that the world runs.

Women have, throughout history and across societies, been seen as
inferior and lesser than men. They have been objects for us to
enjoy and take advantage of. They served us, and we protected them...
as long as they were loyal to us, and subject to our complete authority
over them. We (some African societies) went as far as such
unthinkable atrocities as female circumcision (also known as female
genital mutilation) to gain complete control over their minds and bodies !
Even our very own RAM made Sita sit on the pyre ! [And talking
of trust, look where it landed Sita. Aur kar lo 'trust'. I think she
would have been better off with Ravan. A 10-headed lover in a skirt
who was willing to lose everything for her vs.
an untrusting RAM who wanted to ensure she was pure. What a jerk !!]

That was the dynamic that existed across most if not
all societies. And yes, this was true across western societies too !
The so called female liberation within western societies is a very recent
phenomenon, that dates back to a few decades at the most. Before that
their role was pretty much similar to what has existed in the Indian
societies, i.e. to serve the men.

So the issue here isn't one of trust so much as it is an issue of
empowerment of women so that they no longer are weak and dependent
on men for their livlihood and protection.

It is also not a question of merely making laws to favor them. Laws go
only so far and if taken to an extreme make things worse by unduly
favoring one side over the other ( as has become the case in dowry
related issues, whereby a mere complaint by the female side lands
the guy and his parents in jail !). A legal framework is good to provide
guidelines to punish deviant behaviour, but it can only go so far
in eradicating the problems. It merely serves to provide justice after the
fact. Its role as a deterrent is only so effective, and it is especially
less effective for the male female dynamics that are so
deeply ingrained on our societies.

I always feel that when it comes to social problems we have to look
deep underneath for the underlying reasons that exist for any issue.
We cannot make patches at higher levels and hope to eradicate the
problem. (Its not too unlike the issue of modern medicine vs traditional
Aryuvedic medicines) ! We need to get to the root cause and fix that.

The question then becomes as to what is the root cause.

And, in my opinion, a lot of it has to do with the dependence of women
on men for their security, and that translates into financial dependence
for the most part. Help them achieve that (via economic plans and
incentives, via education, via legal enforcement......) and the dynamics
WILL begin to change. And that is exactly what has happened in
the western world !

Economic power is the real power in this world ! Give more of that to the
females and you will see change. Anything short of that is mere bandaid.

We need to lift women in their personal lives and that will work in every area of their life. I took 'Trust' as a very broad term here. It about not confining women from having power or supporting them coz of social stigma (yey its a stigma coz of insecurity or whatever). Its the personal relations of a woman at first place which create hiccups.

When u trust someone (say a woman in your relation) u give power (independence to do things, finance, motivation etc) and thats what we need !

genital mutilation) to gain complete control over their minds and bodies !
What a jerk !!]..

Again if we take a context from history the things wont change. Ram was a pile of **** everyone knows. We dont need to repeat the history and get rid of it.

I know girls from those communities myself who has gone through circumcision (its the most painful and bitter experience of their lives and its just to kill their physical feelings to an extent) same with guys but it creates more sensitivity in guys , which is another example of unfair society and religion.

Its like cheating in front of eyes and one cant do anything. Thats why I said we have to chage things in personal life which will change the things in aggrigate.

So the issue here isn't one of trust so much as it is an issue of
empowerment of women so that they no longer are weak and dependent
on men for their livlihood and protection.

As I have explained above.

Dont you think its efforts of a woman in different forms which empower a man ? A mom spend years looking after children , husban, brother , father and so on. And We see working Indian women who work and look after family at the same time and thats a 24 hrs job.

In a same way Man has to do his part for woman ! and he is lackin in that may be coz of social things or trend or insecurity. And that where our 'faith' and 'trust' in our personal relations will empower the things .

Economic power is the real power in this world ! Give more of that to the
females and you will see change. Anything short of that is mere bandaid.

Financial independence is good but not all. that will be achieved and I have never ignored it in what I wrote above and before.

I know we guys are sitting here in capitalist economies where husband and wife fight with each other over one dollar and in lot of cases goes to court coz of disputes which are emerged coz of financial greed taking over respect of relation ship.

This principal is not going to work in Indian conditions where people doesnt give too much **** to money when it comes to healthy relationship.

In India money collectively work for a family.
