Well, we all must have met or been friends with gays/lesbians sometime in life, its just that we never realised it, as being a part of indian society its a taboo and we never give them the freedon to come up as what they are. We treat them as an unacceptable breed and look down upon them.
Why?? Just because they have a different sexual orientation, (again, m not sure if this word is acceptable, we really need to grow up if its not) that doesnt make them any less normal than us. They have full right to choose how they want to live their life.
Not accepting gays/lesbians in indian society doesnt ensure that there are no gays/lesbians or less gays/lesbians. They still exist in large numbers and our society is only supressing them, their life in India is a constant struggle to hide their true identity and lot of people related to them also suffer in this process.
Its high time we give them their right. Not only are we ruining their life but also of people related to them. Some parents dont accept their children being gays/lesbians and force them to get married. This is happening all around us...its only that we are not aware. I personally know a couple of people who went through this, and lot many stories i have heard through them. Sometimes under immense pressure to get married or be normal, these people are forced to leave India and move to US and other countries where they are accepted. Imagine leaving your family, frns, country to conceal your true identity...not fair at all.
Parents think that marriage will probably make them fine/normal. What we need to understand here is that they are as normal/fine as any of us, its not that they are going through some disease that can be cured, its just a state of mind because of which they are inclined towards a different orientation. In our country, marriage is such a sacred institution, not only for two people but for two families, imagine being tricked into getting married to a gay/lesbian and then either living all your life with it(again society pressure) or ending up with a broken marriage without any fault of yours. Most of the times, we Indians suffer because of rules and boundaries laid down by us/ancestors. If we accept the gay/lesbians and give them the freedom to come up as they are they can live a normal happy life, no one will be tricked into such a marriage, parents will accept their children (this is doubtful though
One inicident I would like to highlight here. One of my very good frn is a gay and not by choice but by chance. He was molested for a long time by his cousin brother at the age of 8. And by the time he realised whats happening his mind and body was used to thinking that its normal. His life has been a constant struggle, first to accept himself the way he is, then to hide it from others. He even took doctors help for a long time to become (what we call) normal. He told his parents at the age of 25 when they were planning to get him married and now escaping mariage is another struggle for him. Imagine growing up under such a tense environment without any support....he is planning to move to US someday like all others.
I quoted this story to make people realise that sometimes its not their choice at all and they are always struggling to be accepted as normal people by frns, parents and society.
For all the parents, pls take care of your kids, this is just one incident i have given here, there are many such unfortunate cases.
Well i can talk lot more on this...lwill continue with the dscussion if the post is not deleted. So lets handle this post like mature people and i request it not to be deleted as its important to bring this to everyone's notice.
Lets give Indian gays/lesbians a chance to live a peaceful and beautiful life and with pride.
