Anger and lots of it by most! :)

Phool hit the nail on the head , pretty sure the days of this couple are numbered!

But as Jit points out , we should not be looking at this behaviour in a case by case basis but rather as a phenomenon which has started to happen and increasing by the day!

Sunita ji probably got very near to it , the rapid depletion of the affection between the two families is the cause ( the biggest one to me !)

Do not believe the discussion can really achieve anything if we do not scrutinise things in good detail , so let me try and be the devil's advocate .

Have read all the posts and some thing really worry me ( because I guess people have not pondered over it well before really writing those lines! )

Please reflect over the following points in your spare time:

1) We are so agaisnt the marriage in the same village but what if these things happen in colonies. I have seen many marriages happen in the same colony ( for example : I lived in palam colony near Dwarka , its like a half-village types , not so big , I have seen many arrange marriages happen within the colony)! Is proximity the criterion to be against ? Not really!
People seem to be fine about intercaste , in which we donot have any idea about the person , so to me , such marriage is a random marriage in terms of choice , why can't that choice be extended to let's say the same village and same gotra!

2) Deepika mentioned that it is height of lust and desperation ! I beg to differ because the couple involved know with all their conscience that whole family , village and society will be against them. If lust and desperation was an issue they could have enjoyed themselves and parted! If they were meek and weak (and the strength of personality reflects pretty much in the relationships ) they would had a weak realtionship and so would not take such ahuge step! On one hand we talk of true love and on another we are n eglecting examples which might come close!
(I can already hear an uproar against me ! :) )!

3) Parents are not to blame ? Give me a break for God's sake! No parents are fool not to know waht their children are upto. I am very much sure that in 95% of these cases parents know every iota of the things and they make amtters worse for everyone! It is this haste of them to ge ttheir daughter or son married off to someone else which ignites these couples to run away !
Talking to them , convinving them , counseling them , pleading to them ( if need be ! ) , giving them time to ponder over things is much better a solution than giving them only a few days to think( in a sense not think! ) and do silly things!
Also I am very much convinced that there is something missing in the parenting else children do not move to such extreme and irrational behaviour!

Next look at the consequences of a successful campaign against such couples:
1) You get let's say the girl married off to someone. One you are spoiling a person's life ( the guy to whom she's married) , then his immediate family! Marriage is a confluence of two people on physial , mental , spiritual , emotional domains and you are ruining the guy's life for no fault of him ? Same for the other pair.

Now coming to point of teaching such people/couples a lesson , ummm.. pretty tricky to me!
I know a family in which elder daughter did an intercaste , the younger also wanted to ( some 6-7 years later than the first incident ) do the same , parents were dead agaisnt it (they had no contacts with the elder daughter as well during all these years) , and tried to get the girl married (hurriedly!) to a guy and guess what the girl did: She faked up everything and made sure she convinced her parents that she is with them in everything and then eloped away one fine day!
So do these people learn ? NO!

I know a lot's coming my way ! Let's see how much I can be of help in getting a good discussion going! :)

Anil,

I agree with your points. I can understand that such a thing is to our distaste. But living in a democracy and enjoying fundamental rights means that we should respect others' right as well. If someone wants to go against the society, it is their choice. They'd suffer in terms of relations. But all this chest thumping about an essentially personal choice is ridiculous.

Coming to the reasons, I think the difference between a colony and a Jat village is that in the village, everyone born there is supposed to be a big family (brothers and sisters). A colony is by definition a collection of people from different backgrounds, so there is no inherent bhaichara. You can have an affair with your neighbour's daughter and there might be a lot of sh*t show about it between the families, but no one in their right mind can come out and say that she was your sister. But that is the argument in a village. So I have full sympathy for villagers' sentiments as this is against their faith. But that is that. Life is unfair, they did something you don't like, you have to live with it. The panchayat can serve the people better by indulging in some developmental activities rather than issuing illegal death warrants.

As far as causes are concerned, I don't think it is due to some inherent lack of affection or morals in the said individuals. Or lack of parenting, etc. etc. We can feel good about ourselves by showing them in bad light, but that is all it can achieve. Things change with time. Society has changed enormously and is changing every day. Just 50-100 years back, we also had sati, child marriage, no education for women, untouchability. And all these are things recognised as EVIL right now- just a few decades ago they were the norm. Now villages have cable TV. They may not live in cities, but what happens in cities is beamed in their houses. Also villages themselves have grown in size and there is no inherent sense of brotherhood when you don't even know the other person. In that context, it would be a leap of faith to expect village youngsters to behave any differently from their city counterparts. I atleast give credit to this couple for going the whole hog and marrying rather than being in a short term 'leisure' relationship (which is a reality in villages these days as much as we dislike it). Which brings me to my final point- why play god when each one of us would have our own shortcomings. Remember these lines from a song picturised on Rajesh Khanna "Aaj is paapi ko milke hum dand denge saare, par jo paapi na ho wohi pehle patthar maare".

The sarpanch of that panchayat should be hauled off to jail for issuing death threats. Make an example out of him ... see how fast these death threats go away - one example is all that is needed. The sarpanch and the panchs don't want to go to jail because that would mean that they would miss out on the embezzelement of village funds. I would say outsource their jail term to the San Quentin Jail in California. When the black guys rape them in the shower they should'nt crib about it since it is not in the same gotra.

All the members here who appear oh so sanctimonious - when one of your loved ones life is on the line ... we'll see how much you talk. If you still talk you have no humanity.

Ha ha ha Anil why r u so scared of me?:Djokes apart....to be very honest there's nothing to argue about as u expressed ur views about it and i framed mine.We all can't have the same opinion as we all are born with different minds:)....but still i wud say its desperation(this is how it seems to me)....secondly i bet parents can never figure it out as they have so much faith in thier kids they they believe their kids can't let them down untill they really do tht:DMoreover kids have grown real smart(not only in cities but in villages as well)...do u think when a guy or girl is out for a date they tell their parents about it?Ofcourse not.....and about behaviour i don't think so any child will show any gestures in front of parents which wud give a hint to parents tht theres something wrong wid kid somewhere....Human beings are gud at pretending and acting like saints when in real they r exactly opposite the image and reputation they build(i have seen so many:D)So parents are definitly not to be blamed.....well u must have heard'Vinaashkaale viprit budhi"...as u dont agree to my opinion tht it is derived from lust and u consider it love(rather)...then again m sure u must have heared'Love is blind" and when it rules ur mind everyone seems to be fools to u...parents ki bhul hi jaaiye:D....So if they are blindly in love(u can't deny as u think tht way)they won't listen to even parents. So parents r not to be blamed at all for one individual's doings.Parents always to their best to give right upbringing to their kid. This case reminds me of one similar case where the couple(from same village)got married and eloped and panchayat took a decision to boycott the girl's family and made them clean some public area everyday in exchange of not even a rupee a day.Now that was such a cheap and non sense decision. Were they punished because their sin was that girl belonged to them? Why parents are blamed for something wrong their kids have done?....Punishing one individual for his/her wrong doings is o.k but not family memebers

Sid, it appears that you have first hand knowledge of San Quentin Jail(California, USA)......hahahahaha
Now let us come to the topic. Marriage within a gotra or other gotra within the same village is really unacceptable in our(JAT) society. Parents should teach their kids when they attain puberty. Lack of knowledge and poor upbringing leads to such a situation and things get out of control at later stages. Only solution to stop it is that society should generate puiblic awareness about it.

HAhahaha ... tehehehehe tehe tehehe ... Do you watch TV? movies? anything? in North America ... don't you know the condition in jails here?

Lets get back to the topic ... the topic is not teaching kids stuff when they reach puberty, its about death threats. Its the first line in Jitender's opening post -- did you read it? That is why I was trying to address the TOPIC .. I hope you don't work in an occupation that requires an attention span of more than 2 seconds.

But if it was lust, then couldn't they have just indluged in their lustful activities and get on with life? Won't that have been the easy route (and for sure practised by a few in villages as well as cities)? Why create such a ruckus and risk their lives? Obviously, they would have known that it'd be a dangerous path. So we can rule out ignorance completely. The chance of both of them being mentally challenged to an extent of not appreciating the risks is also very low. Which means only 2 things are possible: they felt that they couldn't live without each other (which we can safely call love) OR they were looking for some cheap publicity. I think there are other ways of getting publicity than getting yourself killed, so there is a good chance that they were in love.

Aha Dalal brothers attacking me from left right:Dm a lil scared as both of them are intelligent beings but still i will try to survive wid my opinion abt it:D...so here i go.......Well even if it was love then i wud say it was between two wrong people:Dwhenever we do something our selfconscience warns us if we are wrong...m sure their selfconscience wud also have warned them initially but they din't listen to....love can never be something which fails to listen to ur inner soul....if u overhear ur selfconscience for such bonding then i dont think its love.....love is something ur selfconscience approves of,thts wot i think of being in love.

Maybe, this couple is just stubborn a-holes like a lot of members here ... cheerleaders and self confessed enablers of death ...

Why don't you guys go back and settle down in this bucolic paradise and live by this panchayats jurisdiction since you are with them on this ... It will be a lot of fun .. try it.

Deepika, I hope you trust me when I say that I was not attacking you..:D
And Anil is too sweet to attack anyone.

While I appreciate the majority sentiment here coming from the same background (my mother would be the first in the queue of those demanding punishment for this couple), I am quite clear that it is incorrect. Right to life and liberty to live it as you want is the most basic human right. I don't think anyone can claim to be moralistic, if he can't respect that.

I agree that people should have a self-conscience. But who are we to impose our self-conscience on these people? Maybe they felt a guilt but their desire for each other was much bigger. Or maybe they didn't even feel the guilt. What difference does it make? The bottomline is that it is none of our business. If I don't like them, I'll just throw them out of my life. Refuse to see them. Stop talking to them. I have full freedom to do that. But there is a law of the land and that doesn't grant me any right to cause harm to those who don't live according to my sensibilities. If we want to have a right on their lives because it hurt our sensibilities, then Ram Sena has a right to beat girls in the pubs, terrorists in Kashmir have a right to kill all Hindus, Taliban have a right to stone to death any non burqa clad woman, etc., etc. The choice is yours- you want to be ruled by the mob or live in a free democracy. I hope you see what I am getting at.

m sure u know that i dint mean it(that u guys were attacking)..it was humorous:I do agree that killing may not be the solution to it but if panchs stop doing it things wud go worse and we would see rise in number of such couples drastically.....and then may be later we wud hear first cousins doing it and so on....we should draw a line somewhere....U are elder to me and m sure u sound more wise....but then if we won't be strict then it might make the things more nasty(i suppose)

Quite interesting replies!

So. What’s the outcome ?

Should we recognize the marriage in same gotra or not ?

I don’t find it ridiculous that people getting married in the same village ( not in same gotra ) because all the noise is made by the KHAPS and panchayatas which are prominent in the inner Haryana ( say Rohtak, Jind, Bhiwani, Sonipat etc ). Rajasthan, Punjab and UP have much more substantial Jat population rather than Haryana but there is no KHAP or such thing and hence no such case ( as far as my knowledge).

I failed to understand that what the hell these KHAP leaders have the right to interfere into the lives of the people. Did you ever heard about any such case in Rajasthan, Punjab and UP. Or in the area of Hisar, Sirsa. I bet hardly u came across like this. Then why this thing happens always in the so called inner Haryana where these KHAPS and Panchayats are bigger than everything. There is certainly something wrong and everybody knows that.

For God’s sake, please come out of this KHAP system and try to observe the life as a human being.

If you think that the COUPLE did something wrong then ignore them and don’t entertain them but nobody provided you the right to kill anybody unless somebody wants to kill you and you have to defend it.

Moral values varies from person to person and everybody have their own definitions.

Bakkal taar dungi--hehe

jokes apart, u completely missed the point mate
1) it was an arranged marriage nt love.. so my parents were fine with it if didnt work out (there were initial objections only, but wen realized that its futile considering the distance--buddhey gave in).toh koyi panchayat ni thi

2)seem lagney ki to kya baat..beech me nirey gaam hain

3)N well, I thought gaam me bhaichara hota hai ek khoon k hotey hain.
pick a bio. book n have a look at genetically predisposed diseases.

4) nuu sab freedom n rights ki baat karengey to ...total anarchy..
itney behisaab k rights bi nahi hotey..musalamano punjabiyo aali kar di
arr padosi baraat me javengey ak kanyadaan ghalengey;)

Similarly, when your children would come on Jatland and see these archives, they would be surprised why their mom was making a fuss about such a non-issue.[/quote]

Ha Ha Ha@ being raped by black guys. Who knows maybe the Sarpanch will enjoy it. Lot of people who appear to be so socially conservative have double lives.

Personally, I believe there needs to be some kind of law that prohibits people from same gotra to be married. This would eliminate the possibility of such incidents happening.

There are customs that held our society together for hundreds of years. Our society is being torn apart, a strand of fiber at a time. They are right when they say America is 50 years ahead of India.

American society started to be torn apart some 50 years ago by Social Engineers who wanted to recreate the society in their own image. Today, 40 % of children are born out of wedlock. More than half the marriages end up in divorce. Kids are doing drugs. Those who abstain are froced to be on drugs by the psychiatrists. The standards of education are being lowered every day.

I work with children in Kern County, California; who are not doing well at school. It seems like the sole goal of the educational system is to create diploma factories, so that every year there are more children to flip burgers at a fast food place. And even those jobs are vanishing because of the way other institutions have been run in the country.

The state should never be allowed to dictate the norms of the society. It should be nothing more than an enforcer of the existing norms and customs of the society. Otherwise, we will see India turning into another America; at least socially.

But, we must strive to find non-violent solutions for situations like these. There have been countless examples of couples murdered for daring to cross the thin red line. But, it doesn't seem to be working. I believe children are being emboldened by the support being provided by the state to couples like this one. So, children think they will get away with it if they did it themselves.

Coming to the topic, i've written in past also that those who advocate this type of marriages should try this fashion from their own home. Acha/bura likhna, khud ko mahan deekhana tabhi uchit hoga jab uss pe khud ko bhi rakh kar dekhein. Maine suna tha ke iss type ke kaam chuddey/chamara mai hoya kartey, baki bujurg kah the to hotey hongey:o

Maybe I missed it, but has anyone "advocated" this type of marriage on this thread? If yes, who is he/she?

A couple of points!

1) Thanks Kapil for calling me sweet ! :) I hope people take it in right sense , i mean brotherly love! :P

2) Next , Kapil this ain't fair , do not read my mind :( . I was saying the same thing , NO BODY HERE HAS ADVOCATED THESE MARRIAGES!
( Strengthens people's opinion that Dalal brother's think alike :D)

3) I see only 4 kind of posts here:
a. People vehemently attacking the incident/couple.
b. People opposing the incident/couple but also opposing death threats.
c. People opposing the death threats irrespective.
d. As always some are just here for writing crap! :)

Please bear in mind none of the 4 groups is actually wrong , so appreciate the discussion and difference of opinion.

As already clarified , Phool , Kapil have pretty much written what I wish to contribute ! If you want it in bullet points , here you go!

  • These things need be discouraged but by proper ways , laws against these are a good bet , this will cut the problem at the root , these couples will have no where to go to and will learn to respect societal norms.
  • Death threats and honour killings are not a solution!
  • On a more subtle level , we need to engineer our society in an moving towards better! Everyone (since everyone is a part of society) needs to improve. I totally appreciate the correlation Phool has drawn with America , we do not wish to go into that kind of mess!
