Sanjeev all interrogative sentences don't have to start with words like- why/what/when/is/am/are etc. as "INTONATION" plays an important role , thus how a sentence is spoken makes all the difference. The speaker and the listener know if a question is being asked just from the TONE in how it is said.

Could you guys help me with some research in literal meaning of "suicide". Its root and other related words. I have done some work on this word. Would like to share in case you have not done it.

I am one more appreciator of this thread. Like others i also,am not perfect and wanna improve

Sunita ji,
I assume, we are talking about written English here. Not sure what role does intonation play in written English. As far as I have learnt, an interrogative word must be used while writing a question.

If it is about spoken English too, yours should be right as well. But, then I have doubt if that would remain under formal English.

If you don't concur for written part, please give valid examples. O'wise I will carry on with my knowledge. :)

Sanjeev, the name of the thread suggests LEARN ENGLISH....either way, i guess:) Even if we want to speak english, here we cant see/ show how to speak english, we have the only option of telling how to WRITE english to be spoken as and when required:)

:) !

Thank you very much for a prompt reply !

But my question is still unanswered. How does intonation ( which means, putting proper stress at the words so as to show variation in the tone of a sentence, orally.) help in writing an assertive sentence as interrogative ?

Let's take an example : You are coming to party tonight ?

Can this sentence ever be right in writing ? If yes, please let me know , how ? Can intonation come to rescue here ?

I agree with Sanjeev and feel that the example given is not grammatically correct. Maybe it can be used casually/informally but still doubt if is correct.......

I wish i could speak this sentence to prove my point but i guess i can't. Intonation is an essential part of day-to-day english. All leading BPOs give exclusive accent training which teaches what i'm talking about:)

Dear,

I am sure you still haven't understood what I want to convey! My power of expression has never been this futile. :p

First thing I want to make clear, is, I know pretty well how to intonate an assertive sentence as an interrogative one in spoken English.:)

It is the written part I'm confused about that how to achieve the same while penning down a sentence?

Guys
Please can we move forward. If you really want to learn English, i.e American English you must lose your accent. Haryanvi accent is very thick. There are problems how we pronounce v & w, s and sh, d and t.
There are few CD's available that can help you break your accent. 90% of the battle is won by communication rest is with your skills.

Do a google search "How to lose foreign accent" It will give you alot of hits. These CD's will allow you to lose your accent interactively.

Secondly, must learn how to write properly. No more of this crap, " I respectfully beg to state that I am absent today"

It will take atleast 6-9 months before you can lose desi accent. Once that is done you will see alot of doors will be opened for you if you are in right environment or company.

karan sir, i just went through some of your recent posts... excellent stuff nd nice to see you back at JATland, which surely needs more seniors like you with right combination of wisdom, experience, sanity and international exposure to guide fellow members.
...
sir, i 100% agree with you
... in fact, i pointed out the same error to one of my friend (sr. member) at JL. the usage of word beg seems to be some sort of old english... i mean why do someone has to beg to show his/her politeness or humility ? i don't mind usage of word respectfully though, which is decent and good enough to show the respect nd humbleness/politeness in one single sentence.
...
re-writing the sentence...
"I respectfully would like to state that I am absent today"... guess this is good enough, but again, its correctness nd usage of word respectful can still be argued. but using both beg as well as respectfully in one single sentence is somewhat difficult to digest... karan sir/fellow members (esp mr. sanjeev nandal/pdp beniwal), please correct my take on the matter. having said all above, i would not mind using the original sentence, at times... but only as 'sarcasm'.

I beg to differ ! :)
i wonder, as to why you got to beg someone while putting forth yr points. even if you differ, you don’t have to beg for it. :D:)

I see alot of young Jat kids from suburbia and villages who are hardworking, can write a code but they lack these very critical skills.
1. Communication (Oral and Written). You must be able to express your knowledge, skills and abilities in concise manner, clear enunciation, easy to understand simple english.
2. I have see way too many times, young jat kids will freeze in interviews, meetings, especially if their boss or coworker is a female. They will call them madam. It is not Madam, it is Ma'am. Madam has a very negative connotation.
3. Presentation is everything. Know your audience, know your subject and know how to make subject matter presentation to your audience.
4. Lack of confidence. I can tell you all, I used to be very shy, not communicative, after few years of derision, anger, frustration upon advice of my friend I took communication classes for 2 semester. What a change that brought in me and my personality. I was confident, people respected me, doors were opened for me, opportunities were presented.

I call this journey where Boys become Men.

Karan ji,

Thank you for giving the thread a totally new and refreshing direction. I will surely be checking this space for more. I know you have a lot to share.

I do not agree with you sir on this point(in red). To call Ma'am is not considered good as far as I know. It may be good in school but not in the corporate world.
Thanks.

CSC is a big defence contractor in USA. What does it mean, CSC provides IT services to Dept of Defense, Pentagon, US Military. I am guessing you are working in commercial sector of CSC. If you are a US citizen with security clearance- secret, top secret, top secret with sci (sensitive compartment information), Polygraph etc, with good skills you can easily make $120,000 -- $150,000 yr job with no fear of losing job due to recession or economic downturn.

If there are any jat boys who are US citizens with security clearance..these are the skills very much in demand
1. Virtualization (VMware) Senior Level Pay--$130,000
2. SAN (Storage Area Network) Senior Level Pay -- $150,000
3. Exchange 2003, 2007 with VB Scripting..Senior Level Pay $130,000
4. SQL, Oracle databases ----$150,000
5. Backup, SAN with UNIX and Linux with Perl Scripting ----Senior Level pay---$180,000

If you really think America is what it is because of English, think again!

If you really think England ruled the world because of English, think again!

If you really think China would become a superpower on the crutches of English, think again!

If you really think English will take you faaaaar in your career, you must seriously think again!

The world is your oyster, only if you have the right attitude, not the right language!

Hello JLanders,

As the name suggests this thread is all about english. This thread may be helpful to many of us who want command over the English language.
Here, on Jatland i have seen many ppl have command over the language but some lack in that. So those who lack and want to improve can make use of this thread.

Write anything withouth hesitation. Do not feel inferior to others. English is just a language but the point is English has owned almost whole market through out the world. So, there is no harm if we learn this foreign language.

How to use the thread ?

1. Ppl who wanna learn write anything but all in english with best possible languae they can use. Try to decorate ur sentences if u feel.

2. Do not hesitate at all. We are Indians and that too farmer Jats and this is not our langauge so there is nothing to feel bad if we dont know how to speak/write English. But we can put efforts to learn this.

3. Respected memebers who are gud in English, please correct the mistakes of others who are learning. Also, suggest if a word can be replaced by proper one, use of words properly and grammatical corrections and even the whole sentence can be replaced by some common idiom or phrase.

4. Please ignore the common typos but do point out if u feel its a spelling mistake.

5. Volunteers are required here. Help ur community this way at least where u just need to share ur knowledge and spend a small duration of time.

6. Do not use Haryanavi, Hindi on this thread if u r sincere towards ur learnings. Make it a complete English thread. Ask questions, reply , share experience but all in English. The best way to maintain the spirit.

7. All the best and beleive u have made it half atleast when u posted ur first reply.

Once again, Darna Sharmana manna hai. Ego ko maaro goli aur khao Angrezi ki goli.

Cheers :rock

I am surprised to see that you have quoted this post and asked me many questions.

I seriously question about the last sentence. Did you really feel my attitude is not correct or my intentions were something else? Could you understand the very purpose of this thread or just wrote for the sake of writing?

Well brother, the purpose of this thread is something else. This thread is meant to learn a foreign language which is very much in demand these days and no one is forced to learn. If someone likes then make use of this platform else can ignore the thread and move on.

FYI, I am learning Tamil also which is not a language of Americans and British and I guess it is not going to help much in my career and success. I expect you will give a damn to understand the gist of what I said rather than the words used and examples courted. If still you have any doubts then do quote my this post and I shall try to convince you to best of my ability.

I have really thought on all of the above and found English is not necessary to become today's America, British rule, Success in career, China to become superpower, for right attitude. But I could not figure it out, where the hell I stated all these mentioned in the post above?;)

I was just very curious (by reading the title of your thread) as to why people in India promote English language learning so vehemently. I am generally convinced that English is no magic wand for anybody's career woes.

Personally, I had no intention to bash your thread. I am sorry if you took it otherwise.
