ASIAD brought Colour TV to India Common wealth games will bring HD TV

Much of what we see in the city today harks back to the 1980’s including tourist attractions like Appu Ghar, and Asian Games Village on Khelgaon Marg in New Delhi. Amongst the most notable stadia which were built during these times are the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the Indraprastha Stadium and the Talkatora Swimming Complex. But the most prominent architectural heritage from the 1982 Asian Games is the sprawling Pragati Maidan Complex, which was built on the eve of the games in Delhi. It was originally built as an exhibition and entertainment venue, and it continues to be one of the most popular landmarks in New Delhi

Commonwealth Games

The historic city of Delhi will look its best for visitors during the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi. One of the legacies of the event will be that it will leave behind a city much more beautiful and charming than it currently is. The colonial city-centre and Delhi’s main shopping area, Connaught Place, has been given a new façade and is already experiencing a resurgence. Rajpath, the main avenue in Lutyens’ Delhi, is being rejuvenated. The city’s monuments, an integral part of the rich heritage of Delhi’s past, are being cleaned and revitalised.
New international standard signages and bus shelters will add to Delhi’s modern look as will new public conveniences such as call booths, shopping areas, etc.

Are Commonwealth games really worth the expenditure?

There are two threads running in parallel on JL for CW games, though with different intentions. Media is always full of reports on these games. Are these games really worth to discuss on such a big note? When TOP players from different countries are not participating, citing one reason or the other, will these games still hold their worth? Imagine wimbeldon without Fedrers, Nadals, Djokovics..
Our players will get a better opportunity, definitely, but against who? The good players are already out of contention.

As govt is repeating day by day that these games will help in building better infrastructure, i could see, simultaneously, roads with big potholes, turning into small rivers even if it drizzles just a bit. I could hardly see any improvement in Delhi as of now.

Govt is investing huge amounts in these games, some 35000 crores have already been spent just for stadias and remaining other expenditures which are going unnoticed. Will these games be able to generate back these revenues or govt has different plans to get it back by increasing some taxes on layman?

When 70% of rural population is not getting enough facilities to make their living properly, why is govt not worried about those people? Would it not be worth to spend such big amount in providing schools, sanitations, roads, electricity generation to help the people in rural areas in improving their life standards? There are people in UP/Bihar who still carry human waste on their head, to earn their living.

These over exceeding expenditures could have been utilized in much better way rather than just filling pockets of ministers and contractors.

games host karne se kuch nahi hota hai, olympic mei medal jeetne se farak padta hai. Itne hazarron crore agar sporting talent develop karne par kaga diye hote to shayad india bhi 5-10 gold medal jeet kar le aata olympics mei, par nahi, us se sab ko paisa banane ka mauka kaise milta.

If missing deadlines was not enough, now it has been reported that there is a lot of corruption in CWG related construction & other activities. Vigilance commission has asked CBI to resgister case againt MCD officials.Corruption cases relate to poor quality of construction , granting work to ineligible agencies ,awarding work at higher rates etc.Total 16 projects are under scanner.

Exactly !

Rahul, Sonia errr unke chamche err chamchan ke chamche ne khoob loot machchai sei in games mein. There will be no improvement ... potholes, traffic congestion, erratic electric and water supply, no waste management ..... it will all stay the same.
Log saas bahu err Indian Idol dekhte reh gaye .... pachhe te Sonia, Rahul, lalloo, Mayawati jisse chor le gaye saare ghar ne..

This sporting event is just a pomp and pageantry & a big scandal hatched by the Indian elites, apart from being a criminal wastage of public funds by an impoverished country like India. Successive central as well as State governments never made any serious efforts to provide basic sporting facilities in rural India, but want to show-case India through such mega events costing heavily on public exchequer. Corruption is rampant in all sports authorities/associations and people like Kalmadi have made fortunes. Even among Congress, there is no consensus on this issue. Yesterday, Mani Shankar Ayer again registered his displeasure, during an NDTV talk show, with this event saying that government should have allotted these funds for providing facilities in rural India. The bungling in tenders etc. reported recently by a section of media (NDTV expose) is scandalous. Why should the government make such events an excuse for development. Developmental activities viz. better roads, stadia and airport etc., wherever necessary, can be initiated even without organizing such extravagant events.

The sports infrastructure that has come up will not vanish the day the games are over but will be available for our sports persons to train an play.
The Metro , the elevated roads, the High Tech street lights, the restored monuments and other infrastructure will also remain for us to enjoy and be proud of . First let the games be over , there would be more than enough time for the postmortem and corrective action for any irregularities. which are bound to happen in a massibe project of this magnitude bls31

Why Delhi again?

Why has Delhi been chosen again to develop sports infrastructure after Asian games. With half the money (Rs. 35000 / 2 Crores) any other town or city would have had twice the infrastructure.

It makes far better economic and sport sense to choose a city / town where the infrastructure could have been better utilized afterwards.

Was any kind of debate or thinking gone into choosing the venue or was it purely on the whims and fancies of Kalmadi

I think it was more on terms of earnings & kickbacks(from corruption)!!!!As we know how highly efficient DDA & MCD are in terms of corruption... :)

Players are players and they should be considered in that way ONLY. Wimbledon would always be a Wimbledon whether Fedrers or Nadals plays or not. Borg, Becker, Sampras, Aggasi gone. Fedrer, Nadal are also suppose to go one day.

USA boycotted the Moscow Olympics in 1980, USSR boycotted the Los Angles Olympics in 1984 but were still Olympics. Its the game that lives forever but not the players.

These international events are held to prove the economical, social and political strength of a nation irrespective of domestic situations. A successfully handled International event raises a nation's status.

USA is considered as the richest country in the World but still there are substantial percentage of citizen living in underprivileged conditions. They are spending billions of dollars in terms of money, medicines, arms to the world instead of raising the life style of those poor Americans. What for ? Its all about the International community and 'where we stand' strategy. India is still considered as a poor country but we still try to donate money to the nations who are facing natural calamities, disasters and other problems. Try to see a bigger picture and you will see the substance in it.

Don't we help our relatives or friends even if we ourselves are facing a financial problems. Or Don't we organize marriage parties or same stuff even in bad financial position ?

If we are just talking about corruption then it will always find its way ... games or no games.

To start with take example of Cricket, we hosted 1987 World cup and since then our infrastructure improved to the International level. After a few good performance, we started hosting International Tennis tournaments ( we still need to improve), We hosted Hockey world cup. Now as our boxers are doing with their gloves, we are paying more attention to it.

There maybe a debate that top international players are not participating but ask yourself honestly are we competitive enough to compete with them. In Sports, we are in the second layer of International standards and we have to cross that layer to compete with the creamy layer.

This event could be boon for our players to prove their abilities or we just want to fill up the formal Olympic quota of players to participate there ?

Let Them Play !

True words ...spend the f money on your infrastructure for atheletes and athletes ,things will be much better

The actual cost would have been more if new stadiums were built. A lot of the proposed money has been spent on renovating old stadiums. There are some other factors which were considered to choose Delhi as a host of commonwealth games. The public transport is already in place to help tourist to roam around easily. Metro is now connecting every part of Delhi. Also Domestic and International Airport are in Delhi.

Vijay, In the first place we lack professionalism, infrastructure and congenial environment for organizing such mega-events. Number two, we have some other more important areas which could have been given the powerful injection of funds diverted to Commonwealth. Thirdly, a substantial amount of money earmarked for this event will be siphoned off to third countries in the name of importing expertise and logistics. Charges of embezzlement by various agencies and their officials have been surfacing up in the media and , prima facie, there seems to be some substance in these charges. Successul, if at all, these games might of course bring some favourable publicity to India, but at what cost is a million dollar question. In case it turns out to be a flop show, there will be adverse publicity too, apart from the money going down the drain. Post-games, it may not be possible for the government to maintain the edifices elected by it in a huff. Quite possibly, tenders for constructions work may also get mired into controversy soon. Finally, the sporting facilities at grass-root level seems to have been neglected under the shadow of the Commonwealth jamboree. The pace of development of sporting facilities in the countryside is likely to remain abysmally sluggish in the near future as the government will have an excuse that there is shortage of funds due to Commonwealth Games. Who will be the worst sufferers, our own 'Gudri ke lal' I mean the indigenous Haryana, Punjab, Rajashthan, UP etc ke chhore.

Yeah, all the athletes should run on the metro track. A metro train should follow them with piped oxygen and water. All people should stand on their rooftops with umbrellas to watch them in action.

You see this way it wouldn't even require any renovation of stadiums, etc. It would be very cost effective.

We have proved that China was a fool to built a new sports city outside a metro city. We have again proved that Indians are much more intelligent and innovative.

Yeah..Beijing was a rural suburb in China and after hosting Olympics, all of sudden it became a metropolitan city. After all China is growing economy and is now second largest economy in the world. They have got lot of money to spend. That is why they spent just $423 million on building one stadium in Beijing. A significant amount of money was spent upon transport infrastructure to assist people and new airports were built all of sudden. In this way Beijing became a metropolitan city in China. Same case was with Sydney and Melbourne. Sydney was a rural town in Australia before hosting Olympics 2000. Government spent a lot of money to build new stadiums, airports, and railway tracks to transport athletes, spectators, and officials between venues. Same case was with Melbourne. Melbourne used to be a rural town in Australia. To build this town, Government choose Melbourne to host Commonwealth Games in 2006. Yeah you are right. Indian Government did a blunder of choosing Delhi as a host city. Bhiwani is most appropriate place to host these games. Government should first build an Airport in Bhiwani and Metro, new highways, stadiums to host these Commonwealth games. In this way, India will have a new Metropolitan city.
