Dear Humor Forum colleagues,

I have added some 158 new desi words in the Jatland Haryanavi dictionary. For details, please see my today’s post The treasure of ‘desi’ words in “About Jatland.Com” forum.

I have compiled the list mostly from my own memory but there is a great contribution from those of you who are putting desi stuff in the Humor forum. This is the only forum on Jatland.com which is using desi words. Many words were picked from posts of Dev Dahiya, Devender Dangi, Rupendera Sheoran, Anil Sangwan, Jitu Hooda and some more. Words do not come to mind all of a sudden, either you have to be in a discussion forum or read material. I had to seek the help of my wife also who told many desi words and I must thank her too for this.

Our language is very rich in vocabulary and we should not be shy to use it. Many of us in the Forum (including me) can speak desi language as efficiently as any tau of Mandouthi or Doobaldhan. Language is a rich heritage and we must try to save it from being termed as a dead language.

I intend to prepare the second lot of desi words, which are still left out. For new words, we would have to compile a list. I am reading old posts but it is not possible to go through the entire material. If some of you compile a list of new words (which are missing in the dictionary) and put them in the dictionary yourself or else send to me by e-mail for the next lot, I think this would be a great service to our society as well as to this site which is actually our ‘Chopaal'.

Thank your for your attention.

Bhai Ravi Shekhar Singh,

Many thanks. Our Haryanavi and that spoken in UP part are very common so far as plenty of words are concerned. The one spoken in UP is sweet and lovely tongue, maybe because of sugarcane production in that area - the sweetness of sugar and gudd has mingled in that language too. But in our part, sugarcane production started late (after canal irrigation system came into being). It used to be a barren and unproductive land, totally dependant on rains. So, perhaps our tongue, though also a sweet one, looks rude to others.

The UP part has given us so many lovely words, many related to sugar and its different varieties. The ones which are not yet included in the current dictionary and I am compiling now are: Pondaa (a thick sugarcane stick) Khaand, Booraa, Sakkar, Raab, Raalaa, Seeraa, Chaasnni, Dhoondhllaa (smoke outlet or 'chimney' of a traditional oven for boiling sugarcane juice) etc. If you suggest some, shall be grateful.

Excellent Work !!

Deshwal Ji,

Really Excellent work !!

Some more words

NYARA -- ALAG HONA
NASPEETA --- ??? NOT GETTING CORRECT WORD FOR ANSWER.
CHOBARA --- ROOM ON FIRST FLOOR
AAKHAR --- WORD (AKSHAR)

.
Thanks, Sejwal ji. I have noted the words.

The word 'Chobara', though of pure desi origin, is commonly used in Hindi in written form. Our intention is to include only those desi words which are not commonly used in written form in Hindi. But there can be a few exceptions. Hence, I would include the word 'Chobara' too in the next list, for inclusion in the dictionary.

Great Initiative Sir Ji...

Jat Gotra ki tarah ek Jat Dictionary ka bhi page hona chahiye jatland pe....

Sangwan ji and others,

The Jat Dictionary page already exists on the site :

http://www.jatland.com/home/Haryanavi_Language

The dictionary was perhaps posted some years back as an initial start-up but after that, it has perhaps gone unnoticed. It was a good initiative but perhaps the translators might have been a bit immature. Compiling a dictionary is a skilled and literary job. See the definition of the word "Tau" which still exists in the dictionary :

Tau
An elderly man, with lot of time on hand, often found traveling in haryana roadways, asking directions for Rohtak, Jind or Hissar

Do you all agree with this definition? I think none will agree. 'Tau' is the most respectable rishta in our community, though it is now-a-days also a character of jokes. Remember - even though the Tau of Pandavas (Dhritrashtra) did so much injustice to them, Yudhisthira and others always showed respect to their 'Taatshree' or Tau. In one scene, Yudhisthira requests Gaandhari to bless him - she blesses him with following words: "Bhagwaan kare apne taatshree ke vishaye mein tumhaara man kabhi maila no ho".

The Meham Chaubissi had offered Devi Lal ji the 'Pugree' (the symbol of honour) and practically designated him as 'Tau'. No other politician could receive such an honour.

If all of you permit, I am going to change the definition of this word 'Tau' in the dictionary in such a nice manner which I have done in the case of word "Samdhee" (see in dictionary).

As I have stated earlier, I have already inserted my first document (158 words) in the dictionary and am going to add another such document in coming days. Apart from adding new words, hope I have the permission of all of you to make corrections in the dictionary pages, wherever necessary.

Dear Dev,

I suggest that Cheethda means a 'torn piece of old cloth' and piece of cloth is called 'latta'.

Dear All,

May i request you to try writing only words used in Haryanvi/Jaatu and then give their meaning and avoid using Hindi words like Uplaa....right word to be used instead is Gossa or Thepadi, while Gossa is quite heavy and bigger in size, the Thepadi is lighter and shorter. By using Hindi words we tend to loose the originality of the language.

Sunita is saying exactly what I have written in my thread The treasure of ‘desi’ words in "About Jatland.com" forum. Many thanks to her. Please read my above mentioned thread first.

Before suggesting any new words, please have a look into the dictionary. In case the word is there, no need for repetition. And be sure that the word you are suggesting is not commonly used in Hindi. It would be better if you suggest a word by e-mail to me through this site, rather than writing on the thread itself. Suggestions etc., may be written on the thread. I have included some words suggested by Ravi Shekhar Singh and others in my next lot.

Thanks for cooperation from all of you.
