Dear All,

Terrorist Attack in Ayodhya:-

http://www.ndtv.com/template/templa...+7+killed&id=17250&callid=0&category=National

http://www.ndtv.com/template/templa...e+protest&id=17251&callid=0&category=National

I think now terrorists have adopted a new strategy to disturb the peaceful environment of the Country. It seems that intelligence institutes are not doing justice with their job and duty. Central Government must ensure the internal security of the country & meanwhile govt. should not break the peace process with the Pakistan. I am unable to understand the decision of oppostion to call a national wide protest. Opposition should keep patience on such serious issues because it may disguide the people.
I hope public will keep peace.

Mukesh, I agree with your assesment; opposition should be more responsible. At this hour, all parties should unite hands in ensuring that violence doesn't spill beyond the unfortunate incident. We can ill afford another Gujarat. Tagodia's rhetoric for launching our Army towards Rawalpindi is unfortunate and uncalled for.

Intelligence

Dear Mukesh,

Our intelligence services are probably one of the weakest link in our national security. There are many reasons for that. Firstly on the military part of intelligence service, not the brightest officers and men are posted to intelligence branch. Those who are posted are neither trained well nor are asked questions about their modus operandi. The quality of information depends if it is confrimed by two or three different sources. In our intelligence system, one source represents more than one intelligence agency. Hence, what ever information that person provides to these agencies, it becomes authentic by the time it is filtered and reached the top to take decisions. Not only that, the principal of intelligence is "if a source operating in another country survives more than a year, he/she is likely to be a double agent. I had known sources working for the intelligence agencies for as long as 5 to 10 years. Yet they are considered the reliable sources.

Now the civil side or internal intelligence. I believe Mrs. Gandhi used RAW to monitor her political rivals rather than to do the duty for which it was created. I believe the successive leaders may not have been different. There is always a lot of pressure on the intelligence services from the politicians.

Similarly, intelligence people are also not saints. In many intelligence service employees, take bribe and black mail people by telling them that they may file some adverse report against them. The list of inadequacy is long and painful.

As against, this, in Pakistan the Chief of ISI is considered a most powerful military figure. Many former ISI chiefs made it to COAS in Pakistan. In our country, once an officer is posted to intelligence branch of the service, he is considered as finished professionally.

Unless we change our approach to the intelligence, we will keep having attacks on Ayodhya, Parliament and intrusions like Kargil. We need to revive our intelligence services. All the operational plans are made on the firm intelligence. Thus we need to give intelligence branch equal importance if not more as we give to general staff branch. Intelligence services should remain under one control. Today we have numerous intelligence services and most of the time they use their resources and energy to compete with each other rather than to gather the intelligence. We need to break this trend, to have a sharp intelligence system. The need is to have just one intelligence service dealing with both external as well as internal intelligence. The best person to lead such a service would an army general who should be working with the joint chiefs of staff.

Col Sir,

This analysis is really insightful. Thanks! I think I agree there should be more coordination than competition amoungst our intelligence agencies -- I have followed American politics closely over last few years and after the 9-11 terrorist attacks on World Trade Center this was one of the things that was hardly debated and now under implementation here -- faliure of intelligence agencies due to seperately operating bodies like you described we have in India. We surely need to think about refrom there.

Deepender

I do agree with the analysis of our intelligence agencies by Col.Thawatiaji. This is fact that our intelligence agencies are always politically influenced and being used as a tool to take undue advantages in the politics, either it is congress or BJP or any other govt.
The attack on Rammandir parisar is a threat to our communal harmony and natioanl integrity. This type of incidents can ignite communal riots and thats what anti-national elements want. Our polotical system is not that which is interested to solve problems but it always want to take advantage in their political benefit from this type of incidents.Thats why all political parties blaming each other. This is the time when whole nation should be united and condemn this incident. One more thing I want to add here and that is the role of Pakistan. If we have enough proof of pakistan's involvement in the terrorism and this type of incidents then we should attack and teach a lesson to him, otherwise we should not blame them for every terrorist activity and incidents like this.Doing this we are hiding our weaknesses. For each and every anti-national activity we blame pakistan, this is not good for our international image too.so lets think again and re-examine the ability of our intelligence and political will power.Coming days are very crucial for whole country.
And in conclusion We all should be thankful to the security forces who prevented the parisar from destruction.
I personally feel that the forces did a great job even they are not being supported well by politicians. So salute the soldiers and their bravery.

Many times the source of information for all agencies is just one like newspaper taking their story from PTI. Stories are often planted as booby traps. Intelligence gathering has to be work of very intelligent people as the very word says...One cannot control locust when its eggs are already hatched.... May be India worked on laying booby traps for terrorists. Surely this can be done... Opposition has no reason to agitate as security agencies have done commandable job in this case..Looks like Advani ji wants to regain his Hindutva cards after loosing them in Pakistan.. Biggest joke is that Mr Modi has awarded the security forces Rs. 10.0 lacs and Advani Ji wants to go on strike...what an interesting (read stupid) game by BJP..

Why can't this Togadia fellow be posted in Kashmir along with his followers ? Let us see what he does ? I wonder if he has ever dared to undertake even Amarnath Yatra? Same can be said of Singhal..

About intelligence agencies, the less said the better. Just to show they have so many agents all over the country and abroad, funds are allocated but where the fund go is an open secret. After every such unfortunate incident, I think the security forces should put Togadia and his likes at least under house arrest if not put them in jail so that they don't try to spoil the communal harmony. The present opposition has no business to cry hoarse as during their tenure the terrorists had entered inter alia in Parliament and Akshardham temple. Security people could not have done better. We should be proud of them.

Security Again Tightened....

Dear All,

The people in the intelligence services are not posted from Mars or any other planet. The overall degradation in the society does, must and will reflect in the uniformed services as well. Has anyone seen the photograph of a DCP being carried on the shoulders of a Constable across a flooded street in Ahemdabad? Leadership in action!!!

We have enough good, intelligent, dedicated and loyal personnel deployed all over the country in different intelligence services. The problem was, is and will be dedicated leadership and clear political direction. Be it the Armed Forces or any other organisation. The fault thus lies not with the foot soldier but with the commanders. As and when the directions are clear and concise, the results are there to be seen.

Now comes the question of a single intelligence agency. The kind of character our politicians possess and the kind of nepotism that is growing in the uniformed services, having one agency would be handing over the nation's security to the most corrupt and useless kind of establishment. Checks and counter checks are very much required. I don't believe that a retired General would be the right choice to head the intelligence services. A professional from any service should head the service.

Let us not expect too much from ourselves and our so called capabilities. Let us also not live in a make believe world. In a country where there is rampant corruption, how can one expect intelligence agencies to be above board. Here people can sell anything and everything for a price. Just yesterday a 'Black Cat Commando' was arrested with narcotics. A systemic failure exists. Please don't accuse me of pessimism as what I am writing is the truth.

Attack on Ayodhya is a result of too many failures on the part of our 'System'. But I am glad that it happened at this moment because many people had started believeing that Pakistan was now genuinely interested in peace with India. We have forgotten that a country that can take USA for a ride over decades and the EU for years would do the same with us. It is her character and you can't change it. Terrorism is a business in which all parties involved are winners. The only losers are the common people and their livelihood. Our government too had become complacent and thought that by exchanging old school marksheets of Manmohan Singh and birth certificate of Parvez Musharraf, peace had arrived. Pakistan would continue to bleed us. And we don't have the guts to defeat them. Our politicians are too weak, polity divided and Armed Forces restricted. May be we can only hope for an asteriod striking Pakistan!!!

And see how the politicians play the blame game. I agree with Rajender Ji. Let RSS, VHP & Bajrang Dal make a 'Jattha' that would storm Pakistan. I am ready to lead it provided all the leaders of the 'Sangh Parivar' send thier sons alongwith. I will make sure they are right in the front. If any one from this forum knows any 'Sangh Parivar Member' please give my offer to them. I have served in J&K long enough and I know many routes through which we can infiltrate.

Now the security would be TIGHT for a few days. BJP wallahs will say "Aar Par ki Ladai" or "Muh Tod Jawab Denge" for a few days and then stall parliamentry proceeding for weeks. Though all of them, cutting across party lines, would drink scotch in the finest of hotels in Delhi together.

And the ISI has already planned the next attack.

Respected uncle ji,

Your anguish and concerns are based on the facts which are in front of all of us. In this country people are busy filling their pockets with BEIMANI KA PAISA[how it comes is immaterial] In Mumbai and Ahamdabad there are" SATTAS" being played on every thing...ie..rains will be less or more, After attack on Ayodhya site DANGGE honge ya nahin, Shiv Sena TUTTE gi ya nahin, Kal Suraj nikle ga ya nahin..Etc-2. Honest and dedicated people are confused, Liers and cheats are dictating terms, Govt has no direction, Opposition is creating situations so as to come back to power and corrupt the moral fabric of this nation further. There is hardly any DESH PREM....it is all MAYA PREM and TAKAT PREM. Judiciary and independent institutes like CBI stand manipulated. Common people have to suffer as their condition is like a frog in the well. This country needs OVERHAULING and not the Patch work but then who will bell this HUGE CAT?

Dear All,

Having one intelligence agency may have its pitfalls like any thing else, but it would definitely be better than the current set up. Further it is not to be led by a retired general, rather it should be led by a serving general in the rank of an Army Commander or DGMI. Let all int agencies report to DGMI if we want more than one int agency. The appointment of DGMI should be done by none other that the President/ or Chief of Staffs Committee. The branch may also have officers and men from all the services including Airforce, Navy, Para Military forces and Civil Services to have a better cordination.

It is a good point for debate.

As far as opposition is concerned, having any impact on the life of a common man by bundh and agitations is just helping the very terrorists and the organization that want to harm us. Whether it is done by BJP, Congress or any other party. I am against all kind of processions that affects the normal life of the common man, be it a political procession, religious procession or a social procession like BARAT. We all need to expose those who indulge in stalling the normal life or proceedings of any forum that costs tax payers their money.

.............................................................................................

I personally feel that the peace process with Pakistan should continue. Peace process between two warring Nations is not a thing that can be sorted out over night. With so many areas of dispute ranging from Kashmir to sharing of river waters, one has to come up with a smart and innovative plan where the other party agrees to it and yet you are able to achieve your aim. Pakistan has done it couple of times with us, and we need to be smart enough to do it at least once. That is a serious business.

If Pakistan has taken EU and US for a ride that does not mean that we should not continue with the peace process. War should only be the last action to achieve peace. It is an expensive business and has to be resorted to only once all other options are closed. I think we lack diplomatic skills to isolate Pakistan and thus force any thing on them. Having good relations with Iran, Afghanistan and China may be a good start to isolate Pakistan from her neighbors. Pakistan has a very small coast line, with land routes from China, Iran and Afghanistan under control a naval blockade of her coast can create a lot of problems for Pak without resorting to actual war. There could be many more options available to make Pakistan believe that we mean business.

We must also understand that as we in our country are unable to implement every thing that our leaders decide because of corruption, the same is the case across the border. Thus branding the Pak leadership for every act that may or may not be conducted by their approval may not be the right thing. L-e-T's presence in Pak may be a political compulsion with the Pak leadership as we have RSS and VHP or Huriayat in India. Let us try and find the peaceful solution to the problem. The WAR is in no one's interest and should only be resorted as a very last means.

Security tightened...now...WHY??

It's a shame on the system as on one hand they reported that this is the most heavily guarded site in India and when the security was breached yeaterday following a terrorist attack, they don't want to accept that it was security lapse. Moreover, after the encounter, India was put on high alert...Can anyone ask them a question...why now?? The terrorists have almost done their part of the job...The security should have been tightened before or after?? Terrorists are not fools...they won't attack more than one place in sequence...and if they want to attack more than one site, it will be in parallel...like bombay blast and in that case also they won't accept their failure....PITY!!!

Another thing, OK that India is on high alert...and it'll be the same for 1-2 more weeks...then security will be lethargic again...see the difference below:
- In India, after parliament attack, India was on high alert...and was said that security has been tightened everywhere but after some months there was AksharDham attack...again High alert...and again Ayodhya attack...BUT
- in USA, after Sept 9/11 attacks, security everywhere in US has been tightened...new Visa rules...new passports...+ most important they destroyed 2 countries after that...

Then the intelligence failure...was it a failure?? NO...I think there wasn't any intelligence at all...With India so prone to terrorist attacks, still they are not paying enough attention towards gaining information in advance. So big a country...big economy..big military..nuclear power...and no intelligence. I think we'll have to pay a BIG price for these lapses.

I think it's a matter of serious concern.

Now the another Question

Respected Virendra uncle ji,

Can we equate L-E-T with VHP and RSS....as later does not carry out terrorism and Suicide attacks on foreighn land.Just enhancing knowledge! As regards Security..........There is no security in this country........it is a free walk baring a few big-wigs security.

There was a report that some BJPian & VHP workers attacked in a sufi shrine at Indore during the protest. ... oh God yeh kab sudhrenge.......

rumour-mongering..they tried to stop an aircraft from flying

Our government too had become complacent and thought that by exchanging old school marksheets of Manmohan Singh and birth certificate of Parvez Musharraf, peace had arrived. Pakistan would continue to bleed us. And we don't have the guts to defeat them. Our politicians are too weak, polity divided and Armed Forces restricted. Beautifully put. But then I read somewhere that "secular progressive" government didn't disclose the identities of attackers for sake of peace process!!!

The WAR is in no one's interest and should only be resorted as a very last means.
Allow me to quote Carl von Clausewitz : "War is merely the continuation of policy by other means,"

in USA, after Sept 9/11 attacks, security everywhere in US has been tightened...new Visa rules...new passports...+ most important they destroyed 2 countries after that...
I hope now you aren't going to compare US of A and India!
So big a country...big economy..big military..nuclear power...and no intelligence.
Big only in terms of population, rest is all illusion.
Let RSS, VHP & Bajrang Dal make a 'Jattha' that would storm Pakistan.
No militarism please we are Hindus, we are genetically programmed to be subservient to our masters and to be mauled years after years. It is just not in our blood to give a fight.
BJP wallahs will say "Aar Par ki Ladai" or "Muh Tod Jawab Denge" for a few days and then stall parliamentry proceeding for weeks.
After hArdvani"s confession in Pakistan that would look really funny and yes even Congress would have raised hue and cry had it been in Opposition.

India needs a true right of the center party with far right breathing on their neck, that would provide some sanity to indian polity. BJP,RSS et al are joke on the name of right wing political activism.

Intelligence Faliure or CRPF Success ??

As far as the talk about intelligence failure goes, let's not forget that 9/11 did happen in American with world's most advanced intelligence organizations like the CIA, SS, FBI in its wings; or that frequent terror and suicide attacks do occur in Israel with all its intelligence prowess in Mossad, with all its nuclear stockpiles(Israel has been a nuclear state since 70s), and with one of the most powerful airforces in the world.....Occasionally we have to expect these terrorists to strike in India too. The question is how we deal when those strikes. Like Tom Friedman, the future nobel-laureate from NY Times puts it "In this world where too many people hate other people’s lives more than they love their own, occasional terror attacks will occur. Even in America". And I reckon, unfortunately also so in India. But on the brighter side, India, I strongly feel, has done a tremendous job at curtailing terror strikes so far; even in this case, let's give her the credit to foil evil intentions of those 6 terrorists. Surely those terrorists didn't expect in their wildest dreams that even after such a hate filled attack they all will be killed with not even one citizen or security personnel down. And with zero damage to the site they meant to attack and bomb.
Cheers to our CRPF guards who brought terrorists down with minimum harm done, and cheers also to our intelligence agenciesfor let them prove to the world that India however anarchous on the surface will not be bled by many more such attacks!!

I think the broader question here is how you chose to spin a incident such as this. Do you want to see the good or the bad in the way this attack was handled? Do you want to criticize India’s intelligence and security forces for the sake of criticism? Or do you want to give India the credit that she deserves?

Abhishek - I disagree with your comment on "Big in terms of population, rest is illusion". India, even with her gigantic problems and issues, is far from a illusion, its very real and its a miracle. I'm sure you did not mean this. Let's keep faith in Indian dream man....

You talked about a true right of the center party -- I feel that will occur only when we have strong positive nationalists. Who powerfully believe in Indian miracle....as opposed to negative nationalists who wait in their underwears to jump on to a blame game as an excuse to blame others (like Pakistan or China or US) for our problems, and to incite hostile feelings...all this to get political mileage I suspect.

Dear Abhishek,

You have made many observations. In my view;

1. India needs neither right nor left, but a party who has its head in centre. We all know the jokers on the left and right side of Indian politics. Only dharma left has, is to oppose every single sensible economic policy of government in India and say nothing when Chinese do it.

2. Parties on right like BJP have initiated many good policies but their lifeline RSS etc are extremists without AK47s.

3. Then we have parties of Mulayam, lallu, ram vilas paswan who are nothing but political pollutions. Look at what has happened in Bihar recently. No wonder Ram Vilas Pasvan got heart attack..in Sanskrit we call it..."LOBHO Nasasya karnam". Kingmaker ended up in broken heart..

4. As I had mentioned earlier in one of my posts, India has not done so bad on any front. Of course we could have done much better. But again this is the way democracies work. They are always slow, but steady. The areas where India needs to focus now are, water, roads, electricity, rural education and healthcare. I can see present government putting lots of its energy on these issues. World media is now taking notice of India. There are talks that India and China deserve to be in G8 more than Canada and Italy. As Indians we should be proud enough of this achievement.

5. Now coming to India as not the one who is aggressive in attacking others. I do not agree to this general belief. Indian kings like Ashoka and Akbar had been very aggressive. Unfortunately BJP walas think that Muslim rulers were never Indians. In my view everyone after Babur was Indian as they lived and died here. India broke Pakistan into two parts in 1971. I am sure that was an aggressive approach. Take my words today. Just watch another few years. We will all see Indian forces sitting on the western border of Pakistan in the name of peacekeepers in Afghanistan. Pakis know it already I am sure.

6. What has happened at Indore airport is shameful for the CM of MP. The CM should be dismissed. Reaching up to the tarmac and holding an aircraft is unprecedented in the world history. BJP government in MP should be dismissed for this lapse. What message these jokers are sending to whole world?

So my friend, cheer up. Gone are the days when India could be ignored. This is going to be our century..

Finally, as I mentioned in some other post, terrorism is like jukam khansi and its here to stay. We have to learn how to live with it and deal with it. Chambal dacoits were nothing but terrorists. We in India are the most trained to deal with them. May be USA can outsource our services here.... LOL

Outstanding commentary! I agree down to every iota with these views....

And the piece about Ram Bilas Paswan, however ironic, is hillarious to read!
