India's dwindling livestock
.
India’s livestock is dwindling. If this trend continues, the day is not far when a litre of milk is available at Rs. 100 ! See statistics at the website of GOI's Department of Animal Husbandry – the two statistical tables for livestock census of 1992 and 1997 :
http://dahd.nic.in/census/liv92.htm
http://dahd.nic.in/census/liv97.htm
(Put three zeros (000) after the figures)
Total cattle in 1992 = 204584
Total cattle in 1997 = 198882 (decrease)
Total goats in 1992 = 115279
Total goats in 1997 = 122721 (marginal increase)
Total livestock in 1992 = 470860
Total livestock in 1997 = 485385 (marginal increase)
There exists statistical figures for buffalos (a negligible increase), but no figures for cows ! Is it not strange?
The marginal increase in some sectors is not really an upward trend – compared to increase in India’s population.
India is nowhere listed in the table showing per capita consumption of milk and milk products in various countries. See the following link:
http://www.foodsci.uoguelph.ca/dairyedu/intro.html
United States, with its population of just 30 crores, produces 82,462,000 tonnes of cow milk annually (India just 39,759,000 tonnes for its population of more than 1 billion). Even Russia produces 31,100,000 tonnes of cow milk for its population of just 14 crores !
With this pathetic scene, should we still advocate cow slaughter in India? Should we wait for the time when this creature will become extinct from our land?
