Denial of visa to Modi 'insult' to nation: BJP

http://in.rediff.com/news/2005/mar/18modi1.htm

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday slammed the United States for not allowing its chief minister in Gujarat Narendra Modi to enter the country.

The BJP said the action was 'unwarranted' and had caused 'insult' to the entire nation.

Modi has been denied diplomatic visa and his tourist/business visa already granted has also been revoked as per the US Immigration and Nationality Act. The Act prohibits 'any government official who was responsible for, or directly carried out, at any time, particularly severe violations of religious freedom' from travelling to that country.

"We do not need lessons in religious freedom from anyone in the world, including the US," Bharatiya Janata Party Vice-President and party spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.

* Narendra Modi denied visa to visit US

He said the denial of visa to the elected head of a state government was an 'insult to the entire nation'.

The whole world knows about India's democracy and its pluralistic culture, he told rediff.com.

Another BJP leader said if religious intolerance was the criteria, the US should ban the entry of Chinese leaders.

The issue is likely to snowball into a political controversy, with Naqvi saying the government should disclose if it knew such a step was going to be taken.

"The BJP condemns it. The government should lodge an official complaint with the Americans," he said.

Senior BJP leader and former external affairs minister Yashwant Sinha said the Government of India should protest against the US decision.

"The government should tell them that if the US government gives this kind of treatment to our ministers and Constitution heads of states like Modi, then we would give similar treatment to their leaders," he said.

"Granting visa is the sovereign right of any state, but the manner in which it was done and the reasons given (for denying the visas to Modi) are unacceptable," Sinha said. He said the central government should take up this issue 'strongly' with the US embassy and the government.

* The Gujarat riots: Complete coverage

"Modi was going to the US on an invitation from the Gujarati community. The US administration has come to the conclusion without checking facts with the Gujarat government," he said.

BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu expressed surprise that the 'world's biggest democracy and champion of human rights' acted in the manner it did.

Party leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra said the BJP will meet shortly to chalk out its response to the latest developments. The party is also contemplating to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he said.

whatever might be the reasons, denying VISA is not an answer....

I thought that it was pretty clear that Modi had a big hand in ecouraging the communal violence that happened in Gujrat. Atleast if he was not directly involved, he could still be blamed for govt. inaction. If US is denying visa to someone like him, then why should we crib about that...

I think the denial of Visa is not enough. The US homeland security should arrest and expel people who invited a person like Modi.

Why

I suppose Modi has had a hand in screwing over Rajasthan's Jaat population (along with every other BJP worker/activist/MLA/MP) ?

And how do you justify the USA giving visas to people like the Bangladeshi PM, (given that Bangladesh has a really poor record with its minorities)??

Or, even, take a non-South Asian example. Until 2005, Gerry Adams leader of the Sinn Fein (Political wing of the IRA) was going to the USA every year and drinking Guiness with the Irish-American community including people like Teddy Kennedy? IRA has blood of many protestants and Britishers on its hands.

Justify please.

I have no "for" or "against" views as such on Narender Modi in particular, but this is insulting as there are far worse people than him around that the USA has let in.

Regards, and RAM RAM.

I think Modi should not have been denied the visa. This action is certainly arbitrary and uncalled for. I think it stinks of hypocricy too. What prompts the US to point a finger at Modi when its own action in Iraq is questionable.

The massacare of 1000's of innocent people is in itself the biggest testimony to the govt.'s delibrate silence and inaction during the communal riots. Even if inspite of all this apparent evidence, the situation still mandates an expression of my opinion in supreme court, then god help India.

Thats the ground reality, US can refuse visa even to Indian PM but India cannot pay back in the same coin. India is incapable of refusing visas to US diplomats on the basis of what happened in Iraq. But two wrongs cannot make it right. US has the real ability to be ideological in its international conduct. So atleast appreciate that!

so do you appreciate that what america has done in iraq in the name of weapon of mass destruction .

In fight against terrorism , instead of stopping terrorism they have create more terrorist.

how can US deny a visa to person who is elected representative of the state.

it is really a insult for indians...

I think US blundered here. They have gained a lot of ill will, and for
very little gain.

I would have suggested the following:

1) Let Modi have his Visa (America is a free and just society !)
2) Plant some gorgeous female "companions" in his hotel room. (Good
American hospitality !)
3) Let them do their thing, and get it all on tape...the confessions and the
hanky panky stuff.. (Greate investigative American journalism !)
4) If evidence is not sufficient enough, fabricate the rest (Proven American
expertise in managed research and intelligence ...remember Iraq !)
5) Take Modi to trial (Great American Justice system !)
6) On being found guilty, send Modi to Guantanamo Bay where the Muslim
terrorists are housed...and let thing take their own course ! (Justice Indian
style !)

There you go. America would have maintained the goodwill and yet this filthy
murderer would be rotting in hell !

I think America really screwed up this time !

I think the US has the rights to deny somebody in its territory; India has similar rights and could exercise that if felt necessary. No more waste of words or sentiments for the BJP hate mask. The fact that many people in both BJP and congress-ppl like sajjan kumar,HKL etc should have some deterrance in actions outside their "akhadas" is a good sign; this is a strong message and signal by the US government which is also looking to appease the muslims world over. Value this move more for its strategic importance and do not fuss over this trivial issue to common ppl.

I don't agree with your view. When a country like North Korea can stand up to the US, so can India. Also, 'US being ideological in its international conduct' is a farce. It has different set of rules for treating different nations.
I think if Modi is a fanatic, so is Bush. Even Bush used religion to win the recent elections.

Not entirely true.

Jagdish Tytler is the current "NRI minister". He frequently enjoys trips abroad incl. the USA.

He was the mastermind behind the anti-sikh pogroms in delhi in 1984.

Tytler is a christian. (And many of the sikhs killed were Jats).

This whole thing is a "muslim kiss-ass" exercise on the part of the US, and has probably been masterminded all along by the haraami Congress waleh at the top of our Gov't. Including worms like Natwar Singh and Antonia Maino (Sonia Gandhi).

It's a Bloody SHAME... It's a denial to a CM of INDIA!!!

...Don't forget guys it's a presently elected Chief Minister of INDIA we are talking about! An elected representative (re-elected after the riots I might add) of one of the important states in the Union of India!!!
Just step back and think for a moment the meaning of this... Look; I don't care much about the monkey business in the BJP (or the monkey business that Congress has indulged in till now and will continue to do so) either, Cause they are own Country's internal business!!! So consider the implications of the US government doing such a thing to a self respecting, major giant of a player NATION in the Asian sub-continent!!!...
It is downright humiliating and a slap on the face of the so called inetrnational diplomacy!!!

What the internal politics are, is a matter of our own concern!!! Let the legal system take it's own course and bring the guilty to justice for the Gujarat riots etc.!!!
Those of you who are jumping the gun and gleefuly clapping the hands for the Modi visa refusal should first point fingers at our own legal system rather than jumping with joy AT SOME OTHER COUNTRY's (guilty of it's own war crimes) Slap on your own Nation's face by refusing entery to an ELECTED LEADER and representative of your own country! GEEZ............
[I mean COME ON, even the Indian (Congress) Government has issued out statements aginst that US decision! Do you think that tells you something???]

Don't you think it is another way of an another Country saying; your elected leaders are a bunch of criminals and the election system in your Country is a JOKE??? Consider that again....YOU are the people that voted for these bunch of criminals and Jokers! (Sure I would agree on that with you on any given day of the year, but by george, let some freaking foreigner even say that to me in PUBLIC!!!)

Do you really think that 'they' should decide who is guilty and who is not, specially when it is the representatives of our Country!????!
Shame on us that even for a moment applaud this decision of some another Country that has no business interpreting the character of our leaders!!! (be it laloo or Modi, or any other...)

Rest of the interpretations of the real implications of such a denial of entry by one government to another govt's representative you can make for yourself!!!..........

So what are you gonna do abt this...apart from feeling ashamed...:p..
