Food Security Bill or a Lollypop?

Couple of points :

1. Malaysia, Singapore and HongKong they all were colonies and are still well ahead of India. USA was also very diversed with people from all over the Europe still they are no 1.

2. Pakistan was growing at a much better rate 40-50 years earlier till they lost its course.

3. Just becuase India has sufficient grains this Food Bill wont impact economy? How does this work? How will this get funded?

1. About Malaysia I agree with you. Though much smaller in size and population, the pace of development has been much faster than in India –thanks to the liberalization of economic policies much earlier than it all happened in India. The system works and country is marching very fast with a vision to be in the club of developed nations by 2020. But you are forgetting that Malaysia is a petrol and gas rich country with vast oil reserves. And mind you, Malaysia also doles out lot of subsidies and welfare packages like free education upto school level, subsidized tertiary education, maintenance allowance etc. similar to our food security bill. Singapore and Hong Kong are just city states and there can be no objective comparison with India. Similarly, US also has no comparison with India as it is three times bigger than India in area with vast reserves of natural resources like oil and coal. Moreover, it got independence much before India. The diversity of population there is in effect a boon for that country as it is a country of immigrants which consist of only skilled people. Given the strict immigration check, it is difficult for unskilled people to get entry there. Therefore, the country has a huge pool of highly skilled immigrants and diversity of population has, therefore, proved to be a boon for the country because it is diversity by choice.

2.
Pakistan was growing at a much better rate 40-50 years earlier till they lost its course.
It is a good joke.

3. As already explained, India has huge stockpile of food grains and no expenditure will be required to be incurred towards imports. It is normally the expenditure in hard currency towards imports (like oil) which causes current account deficit pushing the economy into doldrums. Raising of infrastructure for implementation of food security bill is also not difficult as it does not require any foreign expertise and technique. We have got sufficient manpower to manage it. It will rather generate more employment.

Finally, approval of the bill by both Houses of Parliament, is a testimony to the fact that it is widely acceptable by the people of India as Parliament is voice of the country. I think some major opposition parties also have endorsed the bill. If it had some lacunae, why the opposition (including your own party) would have supported it.

food security bill passed.. "food" for the poor, "security" for the congress, and "bill" for the tax payers

VP Bhaisabji,

Could you pls elaborate a little more 'how' of it.

May be, most of us falsely believe that it'll involve massive procurement, logistics, distribution, staff costs. (+ a pinch of corruption costs) adding up all, a big burden on economy and big probability to divert funds from other priority areas: Defence, Education, Infra, power.

Even, if no fund is diverted. Can you pls explain, how this project will be funded. Without raising burden on common people in the name of higher direct & indirect taxes, removing susbidy on cylinders, hiking prices diesel, petrol which will spiral up more inflation.

On a serious note, your apprehensions about logistics required for massive procurement, distribution etc. are unfounded. We have huge mass of unemployed youth, transport facilities and other necessary paraphernalia, indigenously available. It is not a rocket science as the concept of public distribution system is very old in India in the shape of 'ration shops' and the new arrangement is just an extension of that system.

I think that all these types of corrupt bill or the bill which are helpful in enlarging the corruption and making stockpiles of money in foreign bank accounts of all these corrupt politicians are passes without any veto in this so called temple of democracy (Parliament).
Non of these corrupt politicians ever pass the legislation for Lokpal Bill. Who don't want to support any bill directly just walk put helping the ruling party indirectly.

These politicians are just eating the country like Termites.

Sounds like in IPL - Indian Parliament League, every bill passing and uproar is staged and fixed among ruling and opposition players.

If you feel that Pakistan has been ahead of India, then you can advise your party to follow that module. May be you are right, Sir.

Sir, first of all mind your language. Habitually, you have been calling everyone who does not agree with you as 'botru'. Agreed, you are extra-smart guy but do not think that all others are dimwit. What resources you are talking about? Our country has all the resources available. The biggest resource is goodgrain itself, which we have in plenty. Other things required are manpower and transport faciligtes which also we have. India has sufficient Indian Rupees also to meet the expenditure towards wages and procurement of grain etc. No hard currency or import is involved. Everything is indigenously available and it is only a matter of book adjustment. The main thing is availability of material which already exists. What else do you need to implement this programme? Above all, if this programme is detrimental to the Indian economy why the bill was not stalled by the opposition in Parliament. Now, no more silly questions.

Habitually, you have been calling everyone who does not agree with you as 'botru'.

And who is that everyone, except the one we all know, a big congress spoon, who'll defy the misdeeds of congress, to the extent of distorting the fact, diverting the debate.

Bhaisab, first off you got me wrong. I meant to say apne botru jat wali bat keh di, (as wo bhi sawal ka jawab kuch aur deta hai) maine apko botru jat nahi bola hai. Agar apko aisa laga ya nahi bhi laga, to bhi Sorry. I hope you'll pardon a younger brother.:)

Now i will come to the debate on the topic of discussion.

Agreed, you are extra-smart guy but do not think that all others are dimwit.

I asked a simple question about the funding. Which every concerned citizen (who is worried about the falling , dwindeling economy, rising inflation) is asking all around, in all forums, media. I didn't understand, how it makes me eligible for the title 'extra-smart'. I chose to return this title with bend knees. :-)

What resources you are talking about? Our country has all the resources available. The biggest resource is goodgrain itself, which we have in plenty.
Agreed about the resources, but that foodgrain doesnt grow in government farms, for which govt shall incurr very low cost of produce and govt could afford to sell it at a very low price.
What i'm saying is, it'll be procured from farmers and this will involve massive procurement cost.
(now, the requirement is N times the food grain rotting in govt warehouses)

Other things required are manpower and transport faciligtes which also we have.
Yes, But there is a cost for it.

India has sufficient Indian Rupees also to meet the expenditure towards wages and procurement of grain etc.
But this expenditure is so massive that it'll be at the cost of other areas. Our budget has income of X and expenditure of X. To make room for a new expenditure, it'll have to cut down on other expenditure. And what those will be.
Or another thing could be, to increase income, and for that, it'll have to bring more direct and indirect taxes, raise fuel prices, removing subsidies. May be, this is the part i'm interested to hear, how govt will be able to meet this expenditure without making sure, not to hit a common man. And i wish, you'll touch specifically and precisely on that in your next post. Which i've been waiting to hear from you.

No hard currency or import is involved.
Fully agree on this.

Everything is indigenously available and it is only a matter of book adjustment.
This book adjustment is what i want to hear specifically, how !

The main thing is availability of material which already exists. What else do you need to implement this programme?
Extra Money.

Above all, if this programme is detrimental to the Indian economy why the bill was not stalled by the opposition in Parliament
Because no political party could dig its own grave by attempting to vote against for it. It'll be suicidal.
Imagine, can any opposition jat neta in haryana dare to go against jat-reservation? His political career will be finished.

Now, no more silly questions.
Questions are not silly, it' the bill and its timing.

Disclaimer: I'm not against this bill. I'm only concerned, how and where the finances will come from. And how it'll not hurt the already limping economy, and the common man. Because govt is providing only cheap foodgrain. how about saag, sabzi, daal, namak, masala etc.

ye to wahi baat ho gai....'chaar aane ki murgi, barah aane ka masala'
And why was this bill not tabled earlier. When congress has been in chair for so long. Why should it not be seen as an attempt to garner votes, at the very last moment?

Lo, kallo baat:-

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...a-litre-LPG-by-Rs-50/articleshow/22185230.cms

Diesel prices may be hiked by Rs 3-5 per litre, kerosene by Rs 2 and LPG by Rs 50 per cylinder as oil minister M Veerappa Moily urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take steps to tackle a record Rs 180,000 crore of losses arising from dipping rupee and surging oil rates.

Moily, who had on Thursday met finance minister P Chidambaram on the issue, on August 30 wrote to Singh saying without a price increase the government will have to shell out a record Rs 97,500 crore to subsidise diesel and cooking fuel.

"If the present position persists, the total under- recovery (revenue loss) would reach to a level of Rs 180,000 crore in the current financial year as compared to Rs 161,000 crore during 2012-13," he wrote to the Prime Minister.

Ok Satinder, I accept your explanation. However, I would like to request you not to use this word for others too. Being an educated youth, more valuable contribution to this forum is expected from you.

Coming to your concerns about the food bill, I have noted your arguments and will answer the same only after doing some more home work.

Hypothetical situation ..........suppose Modi PM ban jata hai .

What I was wondering ........from decades jo humara nuksan hua hai by Government ( i m not saying congress ) . It would also take decades to repair the DAMAGE , Modi is not magician .

For Eg ......Congress played right cards with Food Security Bill 1- They might get votes
2- Agar votes nahi bhi aaye agli Sarkar ke pas paisa hai nahi is Food Bill ko success banane mei , then in opposition woh Govt ki full on A B C D karenge .
3- Agar agli sarkar Congress ki aa bhi gaye , so what itne sare bill pass huye kitne success ho gayee ek aur add ho jayega Food bill .
4- This is WIN WIN situation for Congress........damn they are Smart .

Farmer's Suicide will increase drastically with Food Security Bill, in most of the area farmers pay in terms of food to their labour instead of money, Now no labour will accept food they will ask for money, farmers are always short of money, they also sell usually 20 % of crops in village . Now no labour or other non farming community will buy directly from farmers. Still Govt do not procure all the produce of farm . Do you think farmer will be able to sell all the wheat or rice? No. Now all the left will be rotten in farmers's field instead of Govt Godowns. Farmers will pay very heavy price for this Food Security Bill. I think most of the users on Jatland Forum are from medium or rich parents and they do not know much about farming.
