Dear Seharwat Ji,
Present of India is very different than her past. The time when we fell to divisive forces, we were ruled by kings and public hardly had any role. What was happening inside Red fort was not known to people in Chandni Chowk. There was no media. It used to be months before a man in Hisar would know of the new king in Delhi. Times have changed. Most Indians are very conscious of India's place in world. We might differ on whole lots of issues, but all Indians get united when it comes to foreign policy or any country talking or doing anything against India. Fate of India is not in hands of few like Jahangir or Bahadur Shah Zafar. Development of India has now become like a sacred cow. Irrespective of which party comes in power, development has to proceed at higher and higher speed. All politicians know this now. If one looks at Indian and world media, there is more economic news on India than anything else.
No doubt, many issues remain and many more will come which needs to be addressed at top priority. As I had mentioned in one of my other post, Indian priorities have been changing according to need of the day. When she became free, development was the top agenda. India was one of the first countries in Asia to start the atomic energy programme. Contrary to all beliefs, it was Nehru who was keen to have the atomic Bomb. Things got temporarily delayed when Shastri came. Sarabhai was another person who dragged the programmed to its grinding halt. It was our democratic parliament, which kept the pressure ON, and finally we have the atomic weapons. Democracies might be slow, but they are people friendly. Similarly we started steel production and many more large industries. Might be our model was not right, but intentions were.
All is not rosy in China as all the news is censored. They also have massive power cuts and water problems. There is farmer’s unrest in China as well. There are thugs operating in China.
India has improved its defence to the extent that no one would dare to attack it so easily. This is a big achievement. Indian education is well respected all over the world now.
I do agree that there are many fronts on which we have not done so well, but again with limited finances, picture is not as bad as it appears. Water is receiving lots of attention and I am sure India would solve this problem sooner or later. India is a democracy and as already mentioned, it takes time to implement projects. Thought late, but India has been implementing the path breaking projects like Sethusamundarma canal, Construction of naval aircraft career, Chandrayan, almost 3-4 satellite launched every year and so on.. There are not many countries in the world who are anywhere in race now when it comes to high technology projects. Let us not forget that as a democracy, we are hardly 58 years old.
Now coming to corruption. Yes we have this problem in India and there is no doubt about this. However, institutions like CVC and courts are fairly active now, though slow. As we have more and private industries and role of government decreases, I am sure corruption will also go down. More than government, it’s a people’s habit. Slowly it’s changing.
Overall I would say that the picture is not as hopeless, if not rosy. Comparing to world scenario, we are faring well and hope to do much better in coming years..India of today has some identity, unlike many countries that are loosing it fast. Look at Europe how fast it is loosing ...Its like a dead star almost. Look at Japan, one of the richest countries, literally bending back and forth for its rightful place in the world. Chinese are treating Japan like a nursery kid. I am sure you won't find anyone doing that to India now. I feel this in itself is a major Indian achievement.
Regards
Rajendra
