How Agriculture in India will survive and thrive?

Han bhai u r right. I only meant to say that money for NH comes from center. To me Hooda in first term was interested only in Rohtak for NHs n SHs. State highways are responcibility of state. Now for 2nd time we have congress in both state n centre. Its the ideal opportunity if they want to do something.

Thats y i said it depends what and where state govt purpose. I mean it just depend hooda center k lathi kis project k liye lathi deta h.

Quality of soil is definitely an issue like discussed above in one of the post for a good production. An HAU, Hisar reports reflects district wise soil details in Haryana. This report relates the importance of soil fertility with human and animal health as a part of food chain.

A weak soil not only produce lower quality crop but also many induces deficiencies in human and animal.

Report published in Hindustan Times Today

Climate change will drastically reduce the flow of snow and ice meltwater in the Himalayas, threatening the food security of more than 60 mil- lion Asians, warn ecological researchers. The Indus and Brahmaputra basins are expected to be the most adversely affected, while in the Yellow River basin the availability of irrigation water will actually increase. More than one billion people depend on the meltwater sup- plied by the Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra, Yangtze and Yellow River.
“The role of meltwater in the Indus basin is much more sig- nificant than that in other river basins in Asia,“ said Walter Immerzeel, hydrologist at Utrecht University and FutureWater in the Netherlands.
The snow and ice reserves situated upstream are impor- tant in sustaining the availabil- ity of water downstream.

Was Rohtak Well Connected ?Was there infrastructure in place?

Infact From Bhiwani you have option of connetcting to Manesar Bhiwadi and Dharuhera industrial aareas easily. It is same distance from Peeragaarhi to rohtak and Bhiwani to Manesar.

Baaki Sahi baat keh di Beggars are not Chooser.
Yes Rohtak was well connected. And still better than other places. We do not have any option as you are suggesting to connect Bhiwani to Manesar, Bhiwadi and Dharuhera. And those areas are still growing. Distance between Peeragarhi and Rohtak is around 50 kms while between Bhiwani and Manesar is around 110 kms. I hope you see some difference.

Agriculture in western UP is going through most stressful period. There is not enough water in canals for irrigation. Electricity supply is hardly for 3-5 hrs every day and that too with under voltage. Labor problem is another major issue facing the farmers. Most farmers don't have resources to invest into modern tools. Yesterday I was in village and discussing all these problems with my brother. We were trying to retrace the history of agriculture. In my childhood, mosts farmers did not expect much from the government except probably for timely water supply in canal. They dug their own wells for irrigation and paid for everything. There were neighborhood labor cooperatives. I came to the conclusion that for the agriculture to survive in India, it has to come out of clutches of government. Canals are getting dry. Electricity is not going to to be enough for farming needs for another 50 years. Government departments' irrigation solutions are expensive and impractical. Rain fed irrigation and artificial irrigation mix has to be found at farmers level if agriculture has to be sustained in India. "Palewa" method of irrigation is highly water inefficient and has to be replaced by some very practical and economic method of irrigation. I have come out with a simple system for this and will be experimenting before saying final words on its practicality. Solar power is too expensive at the moment and might become useful in future. Designing economic and practical farm tools is another area where innovation has to happen at farmers level. Grain and other products storage has to happen at micro level and not at large scale level for it to be beneficial for the farmers. Forming a informal group of technocrats on Jatland to implement simple ideas can be one step to address some of the problems. Let us form a group of engineers and basic scientists.

Between godowns and chronic hunger in India

The government of India's grain godowns are bulging with twice as much grain as is required, blocking about Rs4000 crore. More grain rots on Punjab's roadsides waiting for godowns to empty so that new grain can be picked up by the government. Meanwhile, India's hunger levels are back at the level of the 90's, with 20% of the population chronically hungry. Worse, even those not hungry are ill or malnourished.

So what is happening here? Let's go back half a century.

Many of the trans-national companies that today control the world market for food, fertilisers and pesticides, started operations during the second World War as munitions factories and those manufacturing lethal chemicals. Once peace returned, they needed to use their utilities for something quickly and they turned to making chemical fertilizers and pesticides. They needed markets for these, so they simultaneously started work on hybrid grains, to bring new varieties into the market which would grow abundantly but only with the use of their fertilizers and pesticides, and much more water.

India's green revolution was based on this. Yes, as its result wheat and rice grew abundantly in Punjab and the state become India's grain bowl. And yes, we became food secure. But at what cost? Over the next few decades, with the government buying primarily wheat and rice for the public distribution system, farmers across the country, multi-cropping for generations, and growing water-friendly and pesticide free millets and pulses, started switching to growing wheat and rice.

But these needed more water, so they dug deeper into the ground water tables. They also needed fertilizers, which our government was subsidising, and this led them to getting used to them, and getting their land used to them. Pulse production and that of the much healthier traditional grains like jowar, bajra and ragi started falling, not only from being grown, but also from people's thalis.

Land started getting depleted and more and more fertilizers and pesticides and water were needed to produce the same amount.
On the user side of the equation, white rice and polished wheat were seen as socially acceptable. Everyone wanted to get rid of being thought of as dehati, so slowly thalis started losing diversity in grains and pulses and adopting wheat and rice. Those dependent on fair price shops didn't have a choice as these two grains were all they could buy at subsidised rates. Falling pulse production led to higher prices leading to lower consumption and lower levels of nutrients for a populace that was, by volition or economic necessity, primarily vegetarian.

Added to this was the media blitz for sumptuous new products with unpronounceable sounding ingredients offering us what passes off as food but in fact is an amalgam of chemicals and artificial tastes. With the biggest stars on the Indian firmament, from Sachin Tendulkar to Aamir Khan, advertising the health benefits of these (remember that the trans-national companies have ad budgets that can pay billions to our stars to say these lies) loving mothers wanting the best for their children, and kids with a yen for the new and hip, also started discarding real food for these confections (primarily made of corn and soya derivatives).

The result? Millions of tons of food rotting in government godowns. About 50% of all Indians malnourished. A significant rise in childhood obesity, diabetes, attention deficit disorder, heart disease and more. Alarming drops in water tables across the nation. More people eating less of less nutritious food. Bigger numbers sleeping hungry every day. An unhealthy population, starving farmers, dying land.

But let us look at the brighter side. The Ambanis, Aziz Premji and Anil Aggrawal just multiplied their personal wealth between 100% and 300 %. Jai Ho.

Very thought provoking post RK ji!
Any initiative at this stage would be a great step forward.
In fact farmers have lost all the hopes from Govt. or any other agency.
Every word in the article by Mallika Sarabhai is painfully true.

Drip irrigation is need of the hour and cooperatives at mohlla and village level can be explored as the individual farmer are not capable of buying the equipment.
Actually, it is not necessary to look for branded products for drip irrigation but we can find people who can manufacture it at small scale level or explore the possibility of engaging village youths manufacturing the tubes, hoses, sprinklers. I am sure it doesn't need big plant and machinery to manufacture the required equipment.
Next step is to move towards cash crops and pulses that the drip system would be best suited for. Not only the storage facilities as suggested by you but the marketing of the products needs a change as the the middleman gets away with the 'mallai'.

Please do something at your level. I hope and believe that you will find like minded people to support your ideas. May not be as helpful as you seek technically blessed individuals for your cause but count me in at least a sympathizer and supporter of the the idea!

Wish you all the success in your endeavor!

Cheers!

Bade Kisan Leader Ki Zarurat hai iss desh ne....

Solution is very simple : No Government Control : Open Market

We all live in open market... our services / job / work ...all are related to open market.

So why services ( Farmer's produce ) of farmer community are being controlled by Govt. ?

And above all Farmer's Lands are being targetted from Bengal to Punjab....

LAW should be framed that NO ONE can acquire any agriculture land....if one wants land..buy in open market...

[ For any project of whatever intensity ..atmax 200 acres are sufficient...which can be bought in open market at ease....................
why through government....................? ]

that's not true. every country is different and has different needs, specially when it comes to agriculture. if govt had not intervened, it would have been a disaster. you know how the inflation has been haunting us from almost a year now. if govt had allowed free trade of commodities, farmers would have become rich (which many of them are already) but many of us would not have enough sugar to sweeten our tea. we shouldn't always debate on comparing numbers with other countries.
in fact biggest mistake the govt has done is MSP and loan waiving which in long term are going to hit not only agriculture sector but also the overall economy. subsidies are always a bad idea. alwaysssssssssssss, we must look at other ways to encourage more people to do framing and increasing our yield than expecting maximum price. why don't you see how advance other countries are in terms of agricultural technology adoption. here when govt waived farmers debt, farmers didn' buy tractor or harvestors, they bought car. why because they know next time govt could provide tractor for free.

beta you may be right in your way but my openion has been formed after seeing ground reality for more than 60 years, regards

Anybody still bothered about the fate of Kisan?
Hapless farmers resort to distress sale
http://www.tribuneindia.com/2010/20101104/haryana.htm#3

I am sincerely bothered about the fate of Kisans. But the irony is that kisans themselves are less bothered about their fate as they vote recklessly in the elections. Candidates having blessing of only two/three dyansties in the Nothern belt of India(especially Haryana, UP, Rajasthan) get elected. Money and muscle power plays a vital role in the elections and our innocent farmers get swayed by the skillful oratory of these so called "khandani messiahs" who cash in on the image of their forefathers/clan leaders. Sincere, well-meaning, honest and well-informed people never get elected to the Assembly/Parliament. They rather lose their security deposit. Therefore, I do not see any light on the other end of the tunnel.

These two farmers and their recognition at Harvard is a good moral booster. Well Done!

==========================

http://www.hindustantimes.com/Two-Maharashtra-farmers-to-lecture-at-Harvard/Article1-628182.aspx

After former railway minister Lalu Prasad, it is the turn of two Indian farmers to take the lectern at Harvard and give its audience yet another insight into India's rising economy. Hemchandra Patil (40) and Rajendra H Patil (50) — who built decent farm fortunes from scratch in Maharashtra's Jalgoan district — will tell their stories at a food security symposium at Kennedy School of Government, Harvard on November 21.

Ray A Goldberg, Harvard's George M Moffet Professor Emeritus of Agriculture, will be among those listening.

Goldberg believes their stories could answer critical questions, including why some farmers succeed while others don't.

For industry perspectives, Harvard has also invited an Indian company working with small growers, the Mumbai-based Jain Irrigation Systems Limited, which has pioneered a water-saving irrigation technique.

Hemchandra grows onions, Rajendra bananas.

They were once "marginal" farmers — owning just an acre or less of land. About 80% of India's farmers fall in this category. Now, each has more than 20 hectares and robust earnings.

Here's what the Patils did differently: They got a formal education. They shifted to drip irrigation, a watering technique that's being subsidized by both the government and private sector. And they went for contract farming for assured prices.

What will they tell their Ivy League audience?

"Agriculture has enough power to bring prosperity if done rightly," said Rajendra.

17,368 farm suicides in 2009 !!

.

Our so called 'Krishi-Pradhan' Country is growing in true sense when it comes to Suicide toll of Poor Farmers. This is the harsh reality, The picture and figures our bureaucratic govt is selling of India's growth in terms of GDP, investments n' all is utter bull$#it!

http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/columns/sainath/article995824.ece

At least 17,368 Indian farmers killed themselves in 2009, the worst figure for farm suicides in six years, according to data of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). This is an increase of 1,172 over the 2008 count of 16,196. It brings the total farm suicides since 1997 to 2,16,500. The share of the Big 5 States, or ‘suicide belt' — Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh — in 2009 remained very high at 10,765, or around 62 per cent of the total, though falling nearly five percentage points from 2008. Maharashtra remained the worst State for farm suicides for the tenth successive year, reporting 2,872. Though that is a fall of 930, it is still 590 more than in Karnataka, second worst, which logged 2,282 farm suicides.

Economist K. Nagaraj, author of the biggest study on Indian farm suicides, says, “That these numbers are rising even as the farmer population shrinks, confirms the agrarian crisis is still burning.”

If Farming in India a Curse?
Your inputs and views please ..

Of course, it is a curse.
Apart from a very very tiny %age, farmers are doing 'farming' out of compulsion (no other alternatives); most of them will happily sell their land to get a job... any stable job, however low income it might be. And why not, a peon/clerk/primary-teacher/constable/jail-warden can support his family much better than a farmer. A constable might have a 'horrible' job, but at least his wife and kids don't have to slog with him.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88hIQ0NlUB4
