How the drip irrigation system is cheaper? Installing a drip irrigation system will take lot of money. Is it good in non deserted area too and for a small scale farmer ploughing just 2-3 acres of land? Samar..any idea?

Samar, farmers are being motivatied

Prashant ,

State and Central government provide almost 90% subsidy for drip irrigation system. It can be instilled in any area irrespective of deserted and non deserted area. Places where there is even 5% availablity of Canal water it would be good. However, it is best for horticulture. There is one mission of Govt which is called National Horticulture Mission (NHM), under this scheme you can avail subsidy from a district and block level.

Yes, I have met with SDM and Visited "sarkaar gaon ki aur" project. Even in developing Green houses there are upto 90% subsidy.

I am planning one "Green House" after current crop.

And as my land in small blocks, I am also want to adopt vegetable methods with covered plastic tamboos.

I am just Entering in Agriculture field along with my job (software engineer)

Lets see how my passion and interest give me results.

And

Our farmers are dying, to hell with the World Cup !

Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa announced plots for all the players. But land? In Bangalore? You must be kidding, Mr. C.M.. So he retracts and now wants to give money. But where will it come from? Taxes, yours and mine. Don't the poor farmers need the land or money more than those players who are already earning in crores?

A government-owned bank will give you loan at six per cent interest rate if you are buying a Mercedes but if a poor farmer wants to buy a tractor, do you know how much it is charging him? Fifteen per cent! Look at the depths of inequality. Water is Rs. 15 a litre and a SIM card is for free! For how long can we bite the hand that is feeding us? The recent onion price fiasco was just a trailer. Picture abhi baaki hai doston!

In 2008, Lakme India fashion show venue was in a Mumbai five-star hotel and was covered by 500 journalists and the theme was ‘Cotton'. A few hours drive from there, cotton farmers were committing suicide, 4 or 5, everyday! How many TV journalists covered this? Zero!
Sixty-seventy per cent of India's population is living on less than Rs. 20 a day. A bottle of Diet coke for us? The electricity used in a day-night match could help a farmer irrigate his fields for more than a few weeks! Do you know that loadshedding is also class dependent? Two hours in metros, 4 in towns and 8 in villages. Now, who needs electricity more? A farmer to look after his crop day and night, irrigate, pump water and use machines or a few bored, young professionals with disposable incomes, to log on to Facebook and watch IPL?

A wonderful article, must read .. reveals real picture of our shining India !

It really surprises me that we vote for people who are implementing policies that will rid us of all our cultivable lands.
how and where will we grow crops and what will we eat.

Look friend! The government policies would continue to be what they are unless we hold some influence on the government for which it is of utmost importance that the farmers of the country unite and hold some sway over the voting and/or they are able to donate large funds to the parties and thus get the legislation enacted as per their wishes.
Of course you are right but you sound too critical and too negative. In the changing times and changing world we need to understand that we should use change to our advantage and do something positive about our problems. As the famous saying goes " God helps those who help themselves". First we need to list our problems and then find some positive solutions to them. So the list of our problems includes i) Erratic Power Supply, ii) Over-dependence on rains and/or the ground water, iii) Depleting ground water table due to overuse, iv) Lack of Storage Facilities along with the inability of the individual farmer to withhold his produce from the market, v) Inability of dictating his own price of his produce, vi) Exploitation of farmers and consumers alike by the laws requiring farmers to sell their produce to the Mandis.

As we know our problems now so what are the solutions? They are:
i) Co-operation among farmers for establishing the following:
a) Village or Block level co-operatives which will function first for establishing storage facilities at village level like granaries and cold stores etc. and second to provide advance to the farmers against their produce which they can sell at the right time (i.e. at the time they are getting maximum revenue for their produce).
ii) Village level collaboration for claiming, re-claiming existing ponds(Johads) and establishing newer ones for storage of rain water and for recharging ground water.
iii) Adopting eco-friendly and organic methods of farming.
iv) Being innovative not only in land, water and power use but also in terms of crop variation and crop cycles and also being more market responsive.
v) Establishing farmers co-operative at may be district level for producers(farmers)-consumer interface. That is these higher level co-operatives can establish grocery stores which would buy farm produce directly from farmers at a better price than prevailing market rate and sell directly to consumers at prices lower than the prevailing market rates and the farmers would be equity holders in these co-operatives and the profits can be re-distributed to equity holders in the form of dividends thus a win-win market oriented situation.
If we think positively, stop whining and be action oriented which the Jats are supposed to be then perhaps we would not be dependent on the government and would truly be independent citizens of an independent country.

Though I broadly agree with Mr. Manoj Kumar yet we will have to find out solution to our problems ourselves and at local level. Now division of land holding among the new generation is a big problem as our land holdings have become uneconomical and are unable to support our population. We will have to use modern modes of farming as well as reduce the number of our population depedant on agriculture. We have to keep in mind that the growth in agriculture is arithmatical progression i.e. its produce increase in the sequence of 1,2,3,4 etc. whereas the increase in population is in geomatric progression i.e. it grows in the sequence of 1,2,4,16,256 etc. So it will be prudent to think of our problems taking a holistic view and reduce the burden of our population on agriculture besides using modern modes of farming and selling our produce prudently.

http://www.bhaskar.com/article/SPLDB-write-up-on-corruption-in-agriculture-2476114.html?OTS

An eye-opening article !

i dont find any increase in farmers income.

der is a rise in average rate provided by govt for a crop but with tat there is a rise in production cost.

earlier when the crop was produced,it was almost at 0 price bcoz everything seed,labor,fertilizer(khad-gobar ki),no machines were used etc etc was available almost free of cost at home.

now when in modern time ,farmer has to buy processed seed(for more production or better quality),fertilizers(dap, urea, potassium, zinc etc etc),pesticide, insecticide ,diesel for tractor or engines, labor cost is also increasing, even though rates has increased but if u will c overall equation der is hardly ny profit.

people say vegetables gives a huge profit but its nt so.

a carat tomato weighs around 15-20 kg.n i hav seen times when in market tomato is available at a price of 15-20 rs kg n in vegetable market in narela it was bought at a rate of 1 rs per carat.

lets c dis equation--lets assume carat weigh is only 15 kg so for 15 kg farmer gets 1 rs but in markets its at 15 rs/kg which amounts to Rs.225.

so the middle man has made a profit of 224 rs on 15 kg or almost 15 per kg but as compared it to farmer who has to buy for the product's labour cost, transportation to market etc n didnt get even 10 paise /kg for his product.in business terms a total loss

hu's to blame for dis????

if we tlk abt govt policies den-----

subsidy

i agree govt provides subsidy but wat abt redtapism in getting tat subsidy?
a illetrate farmer doesnt even know if der ir such thing n if he knows den where to go to avail dem

DAP is available on subsidy but den there is a huge shortage of it in market.

govt provides subsidy on irrigation equipment but wat abt electricity to use them?

there are soil testing labs but who will make people aware of them?

a farmer has to pay penalty even when canal washes its bank due to improper maintenance.

to say,a lot of deflooding equipments are available with flood control department but wat abt providing them to farmers when there region is flooded due to rain water?
n if a farmer has his own equipment den he has to send a huge amount on fuel as electricity is nt available .

there are a lot of regions in India where irrigation is entirely dependent on indra dev or farmer has to pay huge bills for fuel

there are no electricity lines in many regions

wat to say abt govt policy of acquiring land. instead of using a less fertile or barren land for development or for huge projects de go for highy fertile land.take exapmle of RAjiv Gandhi education city in kundli, sonipat.2500 acres of land on the bank of yamuna river.

isnt it a huge waste of fertile land????? n tat too just for damn political carrier.

the more i say abt this thing,it willl still be a needle in a heap .

Good information has been put in the above listed posts by Sumit Dahiya.

People engaged in Agro-forestry, horticulture, dairy, animal husbandry and the like activities should acquaint themselves with the latest techniques and apply them to get maximum produce. Moreover, they must meet the concerned officers like BDPO, Nodal bank officers and other officials for getting the latest information as regards subsidies and other financial concessions available to them.

In addition to financial help through other government departments, Khadi and Village Industries department also advances help in the form of project reports and subsidies for rural entrepreneurs.

So ample opportunities are there waiting for the enterprising farmers and rural people to maximize their incomes by engaging in the listed activities.

NABARD Rural Innovation Fund (RIF) is a fund designed to support innovative, risk friendly, unconventional experiments in Farm, Non-Farm and micro-Finance sectors that would have the potential to promote livelihood opportunities and employment in rural areas. “The Fund with a corpus of around Rs 140 Crore was established in October, 2005 and projects are funded out of this corpus. This Fund is a 5 year fund (extended up to 2012 recently),” says Mr. C.K.Gopalakrishna, CGM. The corporate office of NABARD is located in Mumbai.

NABARD and Swiss Development Corporation (SDC) have been active in promoting rural non-farm sector activities for the last over 25 years by extending NABARD refinance to Rural Financial Institutions, as well as through promotional activities like skill/ entrepreneurship development, market promotion, artisan cluster development, etc. by way of grant assistance to NGOs, etc.
During the studies conducted on the effectiveness of these promotional initiatives, it was observed that there are a large number of product and process innovations reported from rural areas – most often from farmers/ artisans without any formal education or exposure to markets – which have great potential to improve income generation capacity of large number of farmers, reduce the drudgery of rural population especially the poor women, increase employment opportunities, etc. only if these innovations are scaled up and its benefits made available to the large world outside its origin.

NABARD and SDC therefore agreed in 2005 that the promotional funds made available to NABARD by SDC still remained unutilized could be used to spot such innovations and help the potentially useful innovations to be scaled up. This resulted in the creation of a separate Rural Innovation Fund in NABARD for this purpose. The Fund is administered by NABARD under the Steering Committee headed by Chairman, NABARD with representation from NABARD, SDC and external experts in rural development.

Criteria for Project Selection

When asked about the criteria for selection of projects, Mr.Gopalakrishna says, “Any innovations in the rural farm, non-farm or microfinance sectors will be eligible form support under RIF.” The applications will be subjected to scrutiny with regard to capabilities of the champion of the innovation, the concept and the likely impact of the innovation, its scalability/ replicability and the contextual relevance of the innovation, before it is accepted for funding support under RIF.

Despite being an agriculture-based economy we are all well- aware how India is facing an agrarian crisis. More and more farmers are being pushed to poverty and nobody likes to highlight their plight of course as these stories are not so glamorous. Saw this brilliant documentary today portraying the crisis.

So many things can be improved in India with just a simple change. That is reforming labour laws. I don't know why government does not take any step to demolish the labour department which is killing every single business in India. Get new liberal laws and you see the astonishing change in the growth of overall sector.

I am with you on this one and all liberal views. However, I would also like to emphasize that we need to review our farming methods. We should stop imitating the west in the farming sector. We should not kill our land by over tilling it and by overuse of artificial fertilizers and pesticides and insecticides. In fact, the whole farming business is based on unscientific methods and is more of a fight with nature than going along with it and harnessing its powers, as it ought to be. Please watch this documentary by BBC to understand my point of view.
