All these people with negative criticism, I say you are hypocrites. I say you know inside your hearts what I said is true. I know you talk about the same things privately again and again. It is no different then what I put down here openly. Those of you living in foreign countries and criticizing me (with some exceptions out of ignorance) with all this "love/patriotism" for India in your hearts why did you leave the country? Why didn't you stayed in India and made it better?

Yes India has changed. But has it really? Some things are still the same or worse. In no particular order.
1. Beggars - 1.2 billion people so not a surprise.
2. Roads - impassable with boulder size potholes.
3. Child marriage/widow burning/dowry(social change) - ?
4. Exploding population - biggest worry. Too many, too many. The sheer mass of people, the congested cities.
5. Urban sprawl - mumbai now vs mumbai say 20 yeras ago? same for banglore, delhi, chennai, kolkatta. trees gone(deforestation)....
and change everyone talks about based upon?
6. Indians and their foreign partners screwi*%# the poor and the underpaid for profit.
biggest challenge?

I do not know whether this will be a arguement in vain but let's try and r ationalise this stuff man !

Yes India is shining ! I do not have an iota of doubt about that and if you be rational and take it in a postive sense I am sure you would also see it! :)

Beggars , Show me a study where you see more beggars than 5 years back ! Being a mathematician , I will only accept proofs ! The near double digit growth has helped ! There were more jobs , remember all this hue and cry over call centers , youth today does not have to wait till 22-23 to get a job , they can join a call center part - time and/or and they have an income ! full stop ! If we are improving , we should be happy with it ! Poverty does not go in a day and if you have any doubt about "poverty" not being there in US or any other G-7 , go and ask their premier , they are scared like "hell" , Gordon Browm ( UK's prime ministers face tells you a story ) !

Roads : If you have not had the opportunity to visit Delhi in the last 5 years , do it , Time for one i guess ! See the fly overs all around !! Again we are better off than where we were !

Child Marriage / Widow burning / Dowry : There are girls who put up their ads on Jl ( visit JL matrimonials and you will find ads which say no dowry ! change ! happy ? ) You can see so many girl and ladies faces in here as pretty strong faces! :) Few are in admin list ! Waht else do you want ?
A nd regarding social change , buddy , go and visit some hip-hop place in delhi , restro-bar etc , I am not arguing whether it is good or bad , but the change is there and I am pretty sure , it will be to your liking!

Exploding population : It is on decrease , if not first derivative , then at least on the second derivative , If you cannot get what I am saying , go and read some first sem degree Maths ! Do it !

Urban sprawl : Ohh , so you are an climate change concern person , Did you protest in London yesterday ? Obama was there! Ohh , you missed it ? Do not worry , times are probably too bad , its time for survival and not luxuries! There have been a lot of planning thingy now going into city development , so again better off !

# 6 : Inequality : World has seen a period of growth and big time because of capitalism and led by capitalism. Now that it has gone bust , you are seeing all these fiscal stimulus and all , the attempt to reflate , and the recapitalisation of banks and more recently IMF.
More sovereign controlled will be the way forward and for sure will foster equalities! So at least the future looks bright! In any case , come up with a report showing there are more ( as % of population) people under the poverty line and I will stop ! But the fact is that our near double digit growth has actually helped us to reduce it , so we are again better off than we were in past!

Regarding anything else , read FT and you will PM Manmohan Singh's take! And he has with all his confidence said that the growth in India is more "durable" than even China ! :) That's a statement of sorts !
His view is that although cumbersome but still democr acy is mor e conducive than an one party rule !
So appreciate the realities and fact and do not try and look down upon everything!

As they say : Just being different does not make you a genius! :)

I can argue you to death (trust me I can :D , i also have the time because i am a banker , so no work u know ;) ) and with proper facts and logics , the above is just a very small glimpse!
And before you pounce on me , it's only one and a half year that I am out of country and only like 1 and a half before am back full time again! :)

That should probably settle it unless you want to have some more fun!

Pretty sure gonna have some after Monday morning fire ;) That's not an indian term !

I dint criticize you but i was wondering the purpose of you posting this thread?Did you suggest any ideas to bring even a slight change in it?As u have already accepted that we all know about it and discuss it privately then why did u post one thread on it?we already knew it and i guess u din't have to post it as a reminder for you.Well living abroad is not a sin and if one is staying out it doesn't mean he/she doesn't love motherland. One goes to foreign country for several reasons.I am here because the kind of course i am doing here is not available in India. Its not the first time i am living abroad but to be very honest i love India and prefer living there. These skytouching buildings, flashy nightlife and foreigners all around fascinates only for a couple of days. After that it looses all the charm and one feels like going back to the motherland. Why did you post a list of problems when u have nothing to mention as a contribution from ur side to bring a change in it?Its easy to be a faultfinder but takes a lot of courage and efforts to rectify the errors.

Aman,

The picture you have portrayed is not far from truth, in fact it is the truth itself.

Various governments that have come to power especially in a little more than the last decade or so have no dout given respite to the enrepreneural class of India by removing the licence raj. These steps of the BJP and Congress governments have seen the Ambanis, Tatas, Mittals and others of their ilk flourishing as in actual flourishing. In order to further increase their asset and capital base they created business empires with actual functioning and some fake (on paper) companies. And in doing so, provided directly or indirectly employment opportunities to lakhs (maybe millions). The mantle of job/earning/bread provider was now donned by the new elite class and ever influential class of these industrialists. Their influence has penetrated deep, far and wide in the corridors of power (central and state governments). Major policy initiatives by the government centre/revolve around the business objectives/goals of these industrialists. Majority of these initiatives have indirectly benefitted the common man.

However, this businessman-government nexus has handed over immense power in the hands of the industrialists like Mr. Goyal (of Jet Airways who sought government favours in lieu of not sacking thousands of employees) and the Ambani brothers (controlling a major chunk of the crucial sectors as telecommunications, power, oil refineries, retail, etc between them). Of course, not to forget Mr. Raju of Satyam.

The industrialists control not only their respective trade but also the destinies of the common man with no actual checks and controls. Majority of the workforce is being employed in the towns/cities by these industrialists using the retainership/contractual model which is very similar to the 'Hire & Fire' model of the west. The government checks and controls are not sacrosanct and easily bought out by the industrialists by greasing a few palms. There are widespread instances of arbitrary deductions from salary of low wage earners (contractual staff), witholding of salaries on flimsy grounds, late payment of salaries etc etc. The volume of government jobs has shrunk drastically over the last decade or so. The common/average man has no alternative except to let himself get exploited by these sharks controlling our economy.

If you consider the trickle down effect of the benefits taken by the industrialists in terms of tax breaks, policy initiatives, very little has been passed on to the common man on the street.

Besides the working class, there have been various reports which have proved false the government claims of India Shining or Bharat Parivartan. One such UN report claimed that India had more number of infant deaths owing to malnourition in comparison to Africa. With the concentration of wealth increasing in the hands of a few, the gap between the Have's and Have Not's has only widened instead of reducing. One report last year, proclaimed that India would have the maximum number of millionaires against any other country in the world. This news was hailed as positive. But the dark side to it is that though there would be more millionaires, the disparity is going to increase between the various strata of society. One country, Canada is going to have the least number of millionaires which means that there would be more equal distribution of wealth and which also means that unlike in India, all the stratas of society would have easy access to three basic needs - food, clothing and shelter.

The government has spent and is still spending crores of money on advertisements on its achievements. It would certainly have been better had it fed the hungry with that money, given education to the underpriviliged or taken initiatives/given impetus to the farming sector.

Earlier it was India Shining and now it is Bharat Parivartan. These certainly look good at the superficial level and on paper, but the true picture lies somewhere else, which we so conveniently ignore to see and probe further...
