Though I am not a better person to give a first hand account of what was the [political and social and economical proggrammes of Mrs Gandhi yet what ever my analysis of the readings of history say is that she proved to be one of the best Prime Ministers India ever had....
Will not discuss all her political life..But what is of prime concern are her final term as the Prime Minister... 1980-1984. She took power from Chaudhary Charan Singh, who led a massive campaign against her since the times of Morarji Desai Government (Chaudhary Charan Singh was the home misnister then) The 1975 Government accused her of misusing Rameshwar Nath Kao, the then Director of R&AW for covert action against the opposition leaders during the emergency (1975-77).
The times 1977-1980 were turbulent for India's foreign policy... Ayottolahs in Iran and Russians in Afganistan brought India in a state of Dilemma as to whom should we stand with... Though morarji Desai and Chaudhary Charan Singh brought shame to India as a nation, by refusing to understand the logic of the the erstwhile state of USSR entering into Afganistan to capture the covert axction of CIA, Indra ji made it possible for the USSR government to put faith back in the Government of India!
It is wothwhile to note that USSR was the only nation state which stood by the side of India in her attempts to free East pakistan. Whatever followed in Punjab and the Jammu and Kashmir ( For which Mrs. Gandhi is blamed) was a reward of her winning the war over Pakistan witht he moral and physical support of the USSR. The ISI and the CIA were since then enggaged in covert action and Psychological War against Mrs. Gandhi....
One remembers Dr. Jagjit Singh Chauhan's (Speaker of the Punjab Assembly) work in developing the Khalistan Movement once he migrated to the UK, during 1975-77 and abruptly calling it back when Morarji Desai and Chaudhary Charan Singh's Janta Party came into being as the Government of the day.
While CIA monitered ISI action in Afganistan against the Soviet supported Government.. the Janta party government was asleep to all this..... ISI took an advantage of this and started covert action against Indra ji, soonafter she returned to power, what else followed for 11 years is known to us.. the bloodshed in Punjab and the Jammu and Kashmir....
Let me get a bit more critical and blame the Janta party Government 1977-80 for the same.... They did not let India's external Intelligence agency R&AW work efficiently and its sources in the middle east and europe were not explored to get a beforehand account of the actions in India. The French intelligence SEDCE and CIA started all this bloodshed and India remained ignorant of it as we did not let R.N.Kao and his men act at the right time.
Chaudhary Charan Singh as a Prime Minister though was atleast assertive to send for kao and tell him that his impressions of Kao and R&AW were proved to be wrong and that he felt sorry fopr the humiliation Kao and the organization had to face.. But Chaudhary Saheb's failure as a Prime Minister in judging the International situation can not be denied...
1984.. The year talked of mostly when Indra ji is blamed, saw many changes in the international arena. The US was enggaged in buying its intelligence in the Indian Ocean region and the oil tanks put waste since the WOrld War II from Sri Lanka.. Tripura and Mizoram under Laldenga turned violent with the training provided to them in Chittagong Hill Traces by the ISI and Khalistan demand was on fire.... There were 5 Airplane Hijackes in the year 1983 in where Pakistan repeated the same drill. Hijackers pursuaded to end Hijacking and surrender to pakistan authorities who will let them live in Nankana Saheb Gurudwara peacefully... where they could meet Sikhs from all over the worls and do propoganda for an independent free state of Sikhs ( The demand arose from the indifferent attitude of Jawaharlal Nehru in the early years of independence towards the sikhs in west).
Mrs Gandhi tried hard to negotiate a political solution to the Bindranwale's problem ( Which cameinto being aftyer Giyani Zail Sing's failure as Punjab's Home Minister in assesing the real threat and releasing Bhindranwale without even a trial)m, But to no avail!
The action taken inside the Akal Takht was the best she could do to free that holy place from terrorists. One can recall the sort of opposition Indian Army faced while raiding the Golden Temple.. Which makes it clear that the Khalistanis had turn it into a battlefeild!
After that unfaitful event, the security of Mrs Gandhi was tightened and no Sikh was allowed to be her bodygaurd.. Which she opposed to( See her compasion)
And hence she lost her life... saving a nation from International shame and terrorism!
She was the best prime Minister!
