Thanks Dr. Rana. Could you share further from where and how the word Jat from non Indic source first appeared ! This would help us in removing many a misconceptions and misunderstanding on the Origin of the word Jat.
It is a very tricky question – trying to go into the origin of things. Itwould be audacious on my part to start reeling out straight answers. But I dobelieve that if we proceed from the known to the unknown some progress ispossible. A few things come to my mind. Let me mention them here.<o
1. We know that the word Jat (with soft t ) in theChachnama indicating a certain community of people. Let us recollect that theterm is used both for trans-Indus(west side) and intra-Indus (east side) people The extant Chachnama, a Persian enlarged version ofthe original in Arabic is not very old (13[SUP]th[/SUP] Century?). We are notsure whether the orinal Arabic work contained the term Jat or it was a resultof later accretion. Assuming that it was in the original itself, we are notsure of the date of its composition. Assuming that it was written by acontemporary of Kasim its date goes wellinto the eighth century A.D.<o
2. 2 I am quite sceptical about Tod’s claims of readingthe term ‘Jat’ in some so called inscriptions which he claims to have discoveredand left behind only in his English translation translation(quite a queer thingnot to have preserved the original texts –inscribed? Stones thrown into thesea- no copies made- eye copies could have been made). Historians have seenthrough the game of Tod. So we have to leave it there.<o

3 Al-Beruni in his book on India (Tehkeek-e-Hind) appears to be confused when in his attempt to attribute a later day casteidentity to Vasudev he observes that’Krishna was the son of Vuasdev, a king of Mathura a cattle rearing Jat Shudra. The statement betrays his utter ignorance of the caste system as it prevailedin his times, what to talk of our hoary mythological age. Apparently his reportwas meant for his audience back home the use of the term ‘Jat’ was made by himas it was well known to the Arab world. He was only imputing a contemporary hislocal term retrospectively in our pastcontext.<o

4.The Mughal Court conferred statuson the nobles of the court. Chudaman was conferred among other things a statusto keep a number (200?) HORSE-MEN-Sawars and en equal number of ‘Zat (foot soldiers). We are aware from whichsection of any society foot soldiers are recruited. The class of Zat in theArab world was well identified. Similarities of any degree attract commonappalations .That iappears to be true in the case of the term Jat.This alsopartly explains the pejorative meaning of the term Jat.<o
