Jat - Identity and Social Status

Thanks Dr. Rana. Could you share further from where and how the word Jat from non Indic source first appeared ! This would help us in removing many a misconceptions and misunderstanding on the Origin of the word Jat.

It is a very tricky question – trying to go into the origin of things. Itwould be audacious on my part to start reeling out straight answers. But I dobelieve that if we proceed from the known to the unknown some progress ispossible. A few things come to my mind. Let me mention them here.
1. We know that the word Jat (with soft t ) in theChachnama indicating a certain community of people. Let us recollect that theterm is used both for trans-Indus(west side) and intra-Indus (east side) people The extant Chachnama, a Persian enlarged version ofthe original in Arabic is not very old (13[SUP]th[/SUP] Century?). We are notsure whether the orinal Arabic work contained the term Jat or it was a resultof later accretion. Assuming that it was in the original itself, we are notsure of the date of its composition. Assuming that it was written by acontemporary of Kasim its date goes wellinto the eighth century A.D.
2. 2 I am quite sceptical about Tod’s claims of readingthe term ‘Jat’ in some so called inscriptions which he claims to have discoveredand left behind only in his English translation translation(quite a queer thingnot to have preserved the original texts –inscribed? Stones thrown into thesea- no copies made- eye copies could have been made). Historians have seenthrough the game of Tod. So we have to leave it there.

3 Al-Beruni in his book on India (Tehkeek-e-Hind) appears to be confused when in his attempt to attribute a later day casteidentity to Vasudev he observes that’Krishna was the son of Vuasdev, a king of Mathura a cattle rearing Jat Shudra.The statement betrays his utter ignorance of the caste system as it prevailedin his times, what to talk of our hoary mythological age. Apparently his reportwas meant for his audience back home the use of the term ‘Jat’ was made by himas it was well known to the Arab world. He was only imputing a contemporary hislocal term retrospectively in our pastcontext.

4.The Mughal Court conferred statuson the nobles of the court. Chudaman was conferred among other things a statusto keep a number (200?) HORSE-MEN-Sawars and en equal number of ‘Zat (foot soldiers). We are aware from whichsection of any society foot soldiers are recruited. The class of Zat in theArab world was well identified. Similarities of any degree attract commonappalations .That iappears to be true in the case of the term Jat.This alsopartly explains the pejorative meaning of the term Jat.

Good analysis of some of Arabic and Persian sources. Other members are requested to comment on these remarks as well as share their own information to settle the issue of the origin of the word 'Jat.

So you believe that it was a name given by Arabs....and in Arabic world...zat means a foot soldier..from a lower spectrum of society.....did I get it right?

By the way, you are stcik to Arabic world why don't you see the links in central asia and europe....as with DNA evidences given by Paul gill here..we have more central asian and european connection rather than arabic.....what about the term "getae" and "massagetae" from sycthic....?...any reason why do you believe these terms has nothing to do with label "jat".

General Comments on the issue:

Of late one school of thought is determined to disprove what orientalist European as well as Indian authors [using evidences like Linguistics, archaeology, geography, anthropology etc. and of course now genetics too] had said about 'Aryans' to be [indigenous inhabitants] original product of India. Long discussions on two three threads are there of such participants on this very forum in which evidences from Puranas and Vedas, Iranian and Chinese literature in addition to other solid archaeological evidences have proved the fact that what we know as of now as Central Asia was the original home of Aryas.

Now coming to Jats, we claim from house tops that we are descendants of original Aryans but are not ready to explore evidences from outside the frontiers of modern India. Let us scrutinize that data too before jumping to arbitrary results and conclusions.

On Dr. SS Rana Sahib's Post under Reference ------

Dr. Rana has done good work to uncover the Sanskrit literature and some of inscriptions. Now he has quoted a few Arabic sources translated into Persian and re-translated into English to prove that the Word Jat originated from 'zat' [soft t sound] and also that a rank given by the Mughals. About the earlier sources quoted by him I reserve my comments.

But deriving the community name from a Manasabdari rank 'Zat' [point 4 of Rana Sahib's post] is not acceptable to a serious student of Medieval Indian History as the 'Zat' and 'Sawar' ranks were started to be given to government civil and military officials for fixing their salary and hierarchy by Akbar. There is no earlier trace of Manasbdari in Mughal History/Indian history whereas there is abundance of evidences to prove the presence of Jat community from long long years prior to this 16th Century Mughal Manasabdars and Manasabdari system.

Hence we must not fall prey to almost similarity of sound of Zat and Jat to find out the root of the word 'Jat' as Dr. Rana himself has advised in case of his critical analysis of Skt. sources !

Therefore a bit deeper research is needed to settle the origin of the word 'Jat'.

When I say ‘Arab connection of the term Jat’ I mean only the label (name) not the people –today called Jats. We know that name giving is not in ourcontrol. Others do it. Sometimes we ourselves do not come to know easily whatodd names we carry. Even our parents can not wait till we grow up to be able to choose a name ofour liking. Apart from a personal namewe get names from others based on liking, disliking, adoration derogation,lampooning etc. Since the term ‘Jat’ with soft ‘t’ was already known to thearabsA and later by proximity to the Turks and Persians, they were more likelyto pass on the same for identifying the Indians, who came into contact in anadversarial way, by a already familiar term ‘Jat’ by way of analogy (of similarlooking people).Dont we have the example of all south Indians being calledMadrasis regardless of their domicile state?
I confess my inadequacy in handling the Central Asianmaterial. But if I am not wrong no Central Asiasource gives the term ‘Jat’ insome plausible form. I am not able to digest the different terms handed down tous by ‘commissioned’British writers/ historians marshalled to help the Britishin playing the ‘GREAT GAME’ on CentralAsia during 18/19 th centuries. It is no coincidence that ‘Jat’ history writtencomes in many cases from the pen of army men among the Jats.
The present day Jats have a glorious past qas members of the originalvedic India known variously through the several melleniums. Their habitat-floraand fauna, their language rooted in the vedic Sanskrit, their food, drinks,waysof life –are all embedded and derived from the Vedas. To advocates of non Indian original home of the Aryans, whichinclude the people now called Jatsdo not have a strong case.
We have seen enough of attempts on the part of meagrely knowledgablewriters building fanciful theories regarding the origin of the Jats. Theirattempts in handling well known Sanskrit texts to etract the ir desiredobjective, to say the least have not he of any help.

Dr. Sahib,

Thanks for the valuable input.

This is the key to further unlock the issue that the term "‘Jat’ with soft ‘t’ was already known to the arabs ."

This means the term existed before the Arabs begin to call the Indian people also 'Jats' who came into contact with them. From where and when did the word Jat conveying meaning of a group/community of people existed, yet remains to be unearthed. Whether the word travelled from India to outer world or immigrated to India from outside is another issue to be looked into.

But one interesting thing is the Arabs did not call all Indians Jats but only addressed a specific community by this term whether they were their adversaries or supporters in the battle in Sindh in the beginning of Eighth Century AD. This shows that they already knew that the group of Indian people with whom they are face to face are those people with whom for a long time in touch with the Arabs in commercial dealings through sea-route and by other highways as can be gleaned from sources of history of those days.

To cut the long story short, the word 'JAT' representing the community of people existed prior to the time they came into contact with the Arabs.

Now again the question arises then when and where the term 'Jat' originated. So our quest with open mind and objective manner must continue to solve this puzzle !

Thanks and regards

Ranaji, ->

two great scholars..ranaji and rajpal ji..

rajpal ji-> advocating central asian

rana ji -> advocating native theory...

rajpal ji.....you said " it has proved in three threads that aryaans origins was central asian"
rana ji....you said " central asian origin is not a strong case"....

so nothing has been proved or disproved yet...

ranaji... what is your opinion about the DNA study...lot of links shared by paul gilll...it is not a propaganda from british...why the indian jatt...DNA sample match with gotheland in sweden and goths of germany..........why jats have 30 % NORTH european component taht others community does not have.............if hindu->sindhu..and alexander ->sikander...why can't the getae/goth->jat.......

you need to look other sources and modern research....just stick to a single view point and discrediting others without study does not look good.........

native india origin theory and migration of aryans from India->central asia->europe is just a brahaminic propaganda ...very similar to british...and this DNA thing makes it a strong case

I wanted to know whether Rana Saheb searched an Arabian dictionary himself to know the meaning of Zat (derogatory)as hinted by him ?

or

Just relying on secondary sources to put forward such an important theory Like Origin of Jats.

Zat of mughal empire is derived from Arabian word Dhat not Zat or Jat etc etc etc and means being a person and denotes status not some foot soldiers if somebody is mistaken.So when Arbian himself uses Dhat how can we say that Mughal word Zat was known to arabs in a derogatory sense?

What was a 5,0oo-zat / 3,000- suwar officer? ... The word zat (from the Arabic dhat, 'being, person') signified a man's personal rank, not the number of soldiers

Thanks Friend for the post. I am just a student of history and am trying always to learn by sharing views.

I am deeply interested for a long time to know the exact origin of the word Jat in particular and original home of the Jats as well as the 'Aryans' to whom we are associated. My endeavours after reading plethora of literature on the two issues so far have led me to go with scholars who have proved that origin of both is from the area now known as Central Asia so far. The genetic evidences [I knew little about them] produced in the recent posts have further led me to believe that Lt. Ram Sarup Joon and BS Dahiya have done remarkable work to put together available and accessible evidences to prove this theory of Original home of Jats and the Aryans as Central Asia. Dr. Hukam Singh Pauriya [Panwar] has also analysed the issue thread-bare and seems to go although not in convincing way with this theory. None of them was 'commissioned' by any outside agency to write what they wrote.

We may not agree to all that they wrote and actually do so but have no right to label them as commissioned.

As of today, to me, the antiquity of Jas and their purity or impurity of blood is as old as the Aryans themselves.

Various names denoting Jat community through the ages in the sources found in various ancient languages of different countries and the genetic studies point out their longstanding existence as a community and their original home was Central Asia. This has many participants including myself have already proved by listing evidences from several other studies in other threads.

All in all, if some irrefutable evidence to prove Indian original home of both the Jats and the Aryans is produced I am open minded on the issue and am ready to revise my present standing that both of them originated in ancient times in Central Asia and migrated to other places/countries from time to time.

Thanks and regards

The allegedly 'label' imputed as low people to the Jats by the Arabs needs to be rejected with all the contempt it deserves in view of stronger historical evidences in support of central Asian Origin of the Jats in hoary past.

Dr. Dasharath Sharma was the first scholar topoint out, on the basis of the Poona Copper plate inscription of Prabhawati Guptathat gotra of the Guptas was Dhaarana.............

The Jatland wiki page says :

K P Jayaswal had spotted and brought out the fact that the second Guptas, (Chandra Gupta II, Samudra Gupta etc circa 200 BCE to 600 BCE) were Jats, who came originally form the Mathura area. They were of the Dharan Gotra, as shown by the Plate inscription of the Prabhavatigupta , where she gives her father’s (and her) Gotra as Dharan. The Dharan Jats still can be found in the U.P. Mathura region and they proudly point to their ancient glory, of how their forefathers ruled Hindustan.''

This he wrote way back in 1930's in his Book Hindu Polity.

I have read no such old reference by Dashrath Sharma on the issue except in Early Chohan Dynasties published in 1959 and Rajasthan through the Ages 1966. He might have written some article on the topic to which I have not been able to lay my hands.

Could Prof Rana Sahib share the information in your possession that shows that he was the first to bring to light the said information.

Regards and thanks

Jats mentioned in Devasamhita

Devasamhita records an account of the Origin of the Jats in the form of discussion between Shiva and Parvati expressed in shloka (verses).

Pārvatī asks Shiva, O Lord Bhutesha, knower of all religions, kindly narrate about the birth and exploits of the Jat race. Who is their father? Who is their mother? Which race are they? When were they born?

Having read the mind of Parvati, Shiva said, "O mother of the world, I may tell you honestly the origin and exploits of the Jats about whom none else has so far revealed anything to you. Some relevant verses are given below.

There is mention of Jats in Deva Samhitā in the form of powerful rulers over vast plains of Central Asia. When Pārvatī asks Shiva about the origin of Jats, their antiquity and characters of Jats, Shiva tells her like this in Sanskrit shloka-15 as under:

महाबला महावीर्या, महासत्य पराक्रमाः

सर्वाग्रे क्षत्रिया जट्टा देवकल्पा दृढ़-व्रता: || 15 ||

Meaning - "They are symbol of sacrifice, bravery and industry. They are, like gods, firm of determination and of all the kshatriyā, the Jats are the prime rulers of the earth."

Shiva explains Parvati about the origin of Jats in Shloka –16 of Deva samhita as under:

श्रृष्टेरादौ महामाये वीर भद्रस्य शक्तित:

कन्यानां दक्षस्य गर्भे जाता जट्टा महेश्वरी || 16 ||

Meaning – "In the beginning of the universe with the personification of the illusionary powers of Virabhadra and Daksha's daughter gani's womb originated the caste of Jats."

Pārvatī asks, in the shloka-17 of 'Deva Samhitā' about the origin and exploits of the Jats, whom none else has so far revealed, Shiva tells Parvati that:

गर्व खर्चोत्र विग्राणां देवानां च महेश्वरी

विचित्रं विस्मयं सत्वं पौराण कै साङ्गीपितं || 17 ||

Meaning - "The history of origin of Jats is extremely wonderful and their antiquity glorious. The Pundits of history did not record their annals, lest it should injure and impair their false pride of the vipras and gods. We describe that realistic history before you."

Virabhadra ( वीरभद्र) is a super being created by Shiva. Vīrabhadra was a great warrior who eventually blinded Bhaga, broke Pusha's (Sun) teeth and other gods including Indra fled the battle field unable to sustain his power. Vīrabhadra defeated Vishnu and Brahma in the war against Daksha. The consort of Virabhadra was Bhadrakali. Raja Vir Bhadra had five sons and two grand sons named Pon Bhadra, Jakh Bhadra, Kalhan Bhadra, Brahma Bhadra, Ati Sur Bhadra, Dahi Bhadra and Anjana Jata Shankar. Seven major Jat gotras Puniya, Jakhar, Kalhan, Bamrolia, Sura, Dahiya, Anjana, are named after these seven descendants of Vir Bhadra.

This was the beginning of formation of Jat Sangha by Shiva.

And How Can you say this is Jat Sangha ,All of them were sons of Virbhadra and Godess Bhadarkali that should be a Race not Sangh...Decendants of one Father Virbhadra as per your own logic.
