Ok...

So you guys do enjoy a good cartoon...
I am so encouraged with the cool reactions; so here goes on some of my old cartoons.

Here are three of my favorite cartoons that were published in the Indian Express North-American newspaper Editions. (I cartooned for them for an year before stopping as it was getting too much having to find time on coming up with one new cartoon every two weeks!)

Anyways, My directive from the newspaper's editors then was pretty simple; Try and catch the ethos and humorous side of Indian's (or Desi's) in America...

Let me know what you guys think.......................

This is some seriously good talent Hooda....I agree with Chacha...you should
do whatever it takes to bring it out and share with others and bank on it....

This is no less than any Laxman...

My guess is that 80 % of the skill effort is the message conveyed and 20 %
is the art itself....correct me if I am wrong....

And you seem to have a handle on both....

Hooda's desi toons !!

Bhai Hooda, wonderfull toons .. I liked the first one most. U seems to have loads of talent.

Just Wondering how did u fill the colours, they seems to be so smooth and well blended?

postscript: a suggestion, u should have ur signature in cartoons as Shailendra Hooda, "Hooda" is so impressive, isn't it??

Yaar Rathee/Khalkundeji thanks again a whole bunch, just so that you guys know I have already been kinda planning to go down the 'publishing a cartoon book' route for some time now...
The only departure right now is that I am planning this first Cartoon book to be an Architectural/Planning humor book, instead. (I am actively cartooning for an Architecture/Urban Design magazine here right now...and have collected quite a bank of black & white toons already as a result. The feedback on them have been very good so I got encouraged of the idea)...Consider this, you can easily find one on Doctor's, Lawyers, Computers, etc etc. out there, but there is simply nothing on the humorous side of Architecture or Planning.
So obviously I am quite excited about it right now...

You see, (after researching it), for a nice enough cartoon book you need at least 100 plus cartoons or so, therefore I am still working on producing some more (I have only about 50-60 right now) before I can go for it the big way.
[I will let you guys know as soon as it out of the publishing house! :D Just make sure you all buy one copy each! Heh! Heh!...]

Anyways, so I guess the next step after that should be to do one like you guys say; something on Desi cartoons...just pure general humor!

Thanks for the encouragement though and I will surely keep you guys posted!

In fact, if you all have thoughts/ideas that you would like to share with me on the same... and/or better still, have any experience in the publishing side of things then any help/advise would be great and a very welcome one for me indeed!!!

ps. yes Rathee buddy you are right; the most difficult part, before sitting down on the drawing board and picking up the pen, is to think of what the mesage on this one is gonna be....the artwork comes easy once after you have already pictured the scene in your mind. (For example, the actual rendering of the cartoon on Khalkundeji took me just about 15-20 minutes, once as I had already kind of visualized him in that humorous way... ;) )

Thanks Rahul, ....well, the colours are the only part I am not very proud of (but the editor insisted on colored cartoons for his newspaper, as opposed to the traditional Black & white style)...

You see, Once the art work was done in pen and ink by hand I scanned it to the computer and dropped in the colours in 'Photoshop'. (it was painful...not only because there is something so pure and nice about the traditional B/W hand drawn style, but the whole blending of shadows and picking up areas to drop in the colour etc was quite time consuming....used to take me more time than drawing up the actual cartoon! )...

Anyways, that's why the smooth and wash like colors in the cartoons.

good job Shailendra.....this is a revelation....the big brothers of jatland can sketch too....and that too so well!! i always admired Ninan's work for his perfectly timed cartoons....your no less...

Stroke of genius on your part..

As they say, "A picture is worth a thousand words". Tu te jat bhai se teri khatir isne rephrase kar do su "Your pictures are worth million words". I think you have an amazing gift for illustration, and you're able to express some beautiful sentiments through your 'toons. Keep up the great talented work!

Hooda hi,
Very nice cartoons indeed they are!!!! Publish you should soon somewhere... Wondering I was if you could teach(online) basic principles of cartooning in free time to me and who ever else is interested in Jatland... then each other's toons we can sketch in Jatland:-0... sometimes me too try hands with paper pencil but me like realist sketch cuz me don't know how to exaggerate features to make toons... e.g. a very bad sketch of one of my friends:-)))

Seriously, Talk I will to you about cartoon skills sometimes. keep it up.

Thanks Jatin! ("worth a million words!" Dhanyawaad sirji :) ) ... and Priti ("No less than Ninan!" Wow! He was quite my hero from the Target 'Moochwaala' days!... )

Good job Vinod! I liked that little strippling technique on the pencil sketch!... and wow, not just an attempt at the face, but the full figure too! Very nicely done!

Yeah, cartooning is more about exaggerating some typical features like you said, and really one doesn't need to be an artist to become a good cartoonist! (Have you seen how kids will try and draw stuff once they move further up from just stick figures? They are perfect little cartoons)...In fact, as I would tell my students to help them be a lil' more confident when teaching Architectural graphics at the Univ.; We all were good at drawing and doodling when we were very young-remember those spoilt/sketched up walls etc. of our Parent's house's? ...and then at some point or the other we just let go (or got beaten out of us! ;) ) let go of that basic instinct we were born with and moved on....never to feel that same confidence again. But it is still there, dormant and maybe one can dig in deep enough to let it florish again....

Ok, so with those profound words! :D LOL...Just kidding ...I think it is a great suggestion! I would be MORE than happy to assist and guide interested people on basics of cartooning...

Aur haan Poonam, no cartoons for women! If there is one thing I have learnt about the cartooning experience, it is that women don't ever take too kindly to a cartoon of theirs! ;) ...

No cartoons for women! Just curious whether you learnt it the hard way or the extra hard way as there is no easy way to learn that kind of skill. LOL

Actually THERE IS a very EASy way to learn this skill....just watch others
have to learn it the HARD way..... :D ... Bina laathi tode saanp ko maarna...

Good idea from Vinod. Hooda, why not make this thread a "How to"...I have too
often wondered about all this....so would be interesting to learn...only if for knowledge
sake and nothing else....

Of course, there is probably a wealth of info on the web too...but might be
good to hear from in house master....

I like your approach....would have suggested this myself...Find an under-represented
area and create a niche for yourself there. So I think you are going in the
right direction.

Personally I feel that one should always target a market that will allow for the
best chances of success and greatest possible returns. So this focussed targeting
is a good idea...though I have no clue of the scope and extent of the arhcitecture
market/area.

Regarding other general contributions from other folks here....maybe we can
explore the possibility of coming up with ideas here amonst us on Jatland, and then
you putting it to pencil and paper....etc.....In that case Jatland can become
our resource for great common and fun ideas....Well I guess its a possibility.....

And if your tutorial on "How To" pans out then others can try it out themslves and
share it with us......

Yes...I too have been kind of thinking the same about targetting a specific clientele!... (and at the end of the day it's not only targetting Architectural people, but all kind of Planners and planning related individuals!...)

Here is one to give you an idea of what I have been doing recently...
This cartoon was a satire aimed at the never ending Romance that Americans have with their Cars and anything related to it! (at the cost of giving up Design of Architecturally good looking homes!)...

[A realtor 'trying' to appeal to a couple's sensibilities who are out to buy a New home for themselves!]
