Love, hate, greed, lust, anger, jealousy, pride etc are all natural traits and part of human biology. Each trait has its positive and negative aspects. Used in right proportions, each trait is beneficial. Problem arises when any of these traits is used in extreme. Evil has been defined by one philosopher as “the good carried out in excess". Hate is a very good trait when one uses it against bad things. Problem comes when its use is extended to everything a man stands for. Same is true I suppose for all human traits.

Rajendra sir has very aptly said that love and hatred are different emotions that we go through and that they are not bad in themselves. I too have said so in a different thread. Emotions,be them positive or negative, arent bad in themselves because its natural to go through them. Its ok to have them as far as they are in moderation but the problem arises when we feel them in extreme. Be it love or hatred if it is in extreme it surely isnt sign of emotional well being. This much for emotions per se.

Now as far as love vs hatred is considered of course anybody would say love. No one would like to have hatred within or around. Hatred venoms the life while love nurtures it. Hatred is a very strong emotion as love is. When we hate someone it affects us too and we too feel its repurcussions within ourselves. Our mind is occupied with negative feelings because of that hatred. We frawn, become irritated and angry while exactly the opposite happens when we feel love. In that case we have a smile on our face, we look at and feel the beauty in our world. Life becomes aesthetic and we are filled with enthusiasm. We think well of others and positive about life in general. So this is how the two emotions affect us in diverse ways. One makes the life and world beautiful while the other makes it ugly. So the choice is clear!

Kudos !!

Poonam, Very Beautifully explained .. :)

thanks Poonam for the inputs.however i find it very difficult to digest that Hatred can have some thing positive in it.Will you be more apt in explaining as to how hatred is not bad. Will be interesting to hear from you. That these are natural emotion is a common knowledge as brought out by Rajinder bhai jaan but application of hatred and consequences need to be highlighted in correct perspective. Will be eager to hear more on that.Saying that every body will go for love is not understood.......Lets not stand on a platform of distribution centre.......It is an option with each individual but not a choice in the hands of others.

Dev ji, i will try to explain it further and hope that it will be able to satisfy you. First of all hatred doesnt have positivity in general but its natural to feel it. I said that feeling any emotion is natural but whether they are positive or negative depends upon their context, extent, perception of the society, cause, result and many other factors. Hatred generally is harmful to both self and others and leads to no good. Hatred is a poison and does not have even cathartic effect as, say, anger has. So i didnt say that hatred is positive in any way. But i did say that its natural. People may say that we hate terrorism for eg. and so its positive but hatred itself is not positive. Hatred results only in destructive acts which in turn is not healthy. Hatred is associated with violence. Its consequence will always be some form of violence.

The thread is love vs hatred and the very topic urges to choose between the two. People may choose whatever they like but i choose love. Nobody would like to burn in the fire of hatred if its in their power. Hatred breeds only hatred while love brings more love. Let us see what people choose...

So kind of you Poonam. In Fact if you read the thread subject carefully it wants to find out the Good/bad effects of both these emotions on an individual/group etc. However Your inputs are not without substance.I like the way you pen down your thoughts.Keep it up!

Thank you very much Dev ji!!! Its always a pleasure to get encouragement from worthy members like you. I went through the thread again and yes its about the effect of these emotions. My posts have delved into this too. I will try to come up with more on it.

why so much hatred for "HATE"???

Hate is just an inverse emotion of love, it depends how people use it. what people do in the influence of both depends upon one's perspective.
So, we cannot generalize emotions, as all depends what do you hate or love, Freedom fighter of one country can be tainted as terrorist for other. hatred for violence is equivalent to love for non-violence.

Coming to the main topic, both HATE n LOVE are intensive emotions unlike others and can affect actions of people, i guess the change in people after giving birth to a child and feeling responsible for one life and loving it to all extents is most visible one.

Disagree !

Hatred generally is harmful to both self and others and leads to no good.

Generalisation itself is a harmful thing , couple of lines erlier you were categorising things and now you are generalising , umm... thats not done ! Again disagree becasue there are no obvious universal generalisations!

Hatred results only in destructive acts which in turn is not healthy. Hatred is associated with violence. Its consequence will always be some form of violence.

again a generalisation of sorts by using the word always , diagree again ... :)

Most human emotions are self-feeding by nature, they if not exercisesd by discretion can lead to indulgence and so either one must have sufficient self control ( which is hard to find :) ) else one has to bring in the negation of the same emotion.

So both the positive and negative ( you named it that way , I do not categorise human emotions) are very essential for smooth functioning of our lives!
:)

Thanks Amit.......Intelligent stuff this.......but wish something in detail from you.

On the question of what to practice , I have dwelled on it a lot personally , i guess the best one can do in life is to practice equanimity!

Nothing better exists! :)

On the question of what love and hatred can do to ourselves , family , society , i am not with either , again none can beat equanimity. Best is to stay close to the average ( I am happy that my thoughts do have a certain repetitiveness about them , remember my law of averages ;)).

But that seems to me an exceptional stance........Equanimity is not a common phenomenon......It is more of a very balanced approach...only possible to be practiced by well prepared human beings......balanced ones.Lets also talk of average human beings..not so prudent and balanced after all.

Dev Sir , I guess a couple of people have mentioned that the hatred for something that is an evil in society is a plus . Negation of negative is positive ! :)

Lets me take a very specific example ( we can try and generalise it a bit to similar situations) , you hate someone for his/her intellect , you want to compete , you tend to develop a passion within yourself , ( dont confuse that with inspiration , human emotions are interlinked a lot ) , you want to topple the other guy , you put everything into it .... then you do make it , not becasue of your hatred , but because you had the potential always , just that it was not realised! If you are good , the hatred should convert itself into a respect some day! :)

I know sympathetic joy is a quality to posess , but the inverse ain't that bad if you are willing to channelise it to something very constructive! :)

Nice reply for sure...but here hatred was chanalized by some positive and perfact mental calculation...in a way hatred turned up side down.

And should i say that may be for that very particular reason ( I mean for the very average of folks), to prevent those self-feeding loops of one, god created the other.
Nature does have those very subtle balancing acts , because in a hidden way , it wants us to be neutral , to practise equanimity!

And if you want me to comment on which one one should prefer ( given I only have two options , love and hatred ) , I would say a 50-50% portfolio of both is the best hedge against the fat tails ( my lil finance knowledge):D!
To clarify , one should opt for both based on circumstances , and try and channelise the enormous energy out of these to the best possible outcome for oneself , family , society at large! :)
