Srinagar/New Delhi: Two top Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba commanders were among the five terrorists killed in long-drawn fierce gunbattles in north Kashmir’s Baramulla and Bandipora district since Tuesday night.
The intensity of the two encounters with the well-armed terrorists can be gauged from the fact that an army Major, a naval marine commando and two jawans also lost their lives in the operations, while nine others were also injured.
With over 30 encounters taking place in J&K in the last 45 days, army chief General Deepak Kapoor on Wednesday squarely blamed Pakistan for trying to push in as many terrorists as possible before the mountain passes get snowed under. “As winter is approaching, attempts are being made from the other side to push in as many infiltrators as possible,’’ said Gen Kapoor in Jaipur.
Pointing to the spike in ceasefire violations in recent days, Gen Kapoor also indicated that the Pakistan army was back to its old strategy of giving covering fire to militants sneaking across the LoC.
Asked about the heavy toll suffered by the security forces in the recent encounters, the army chief said his troops were trying to ensure there was no civilian “collateral damage’’. Major J S Suri and Naik Khushal Singh were killed when they stormed a house at Baniyar Ajus in Bandipora district, where two Hizbul commanders Pasha and Mussa were holed up, on Wednesday. Two other Majors, Gautam Raj Reshi and Kamlesh Kumar, NCO Mahipal Singh and Sepoy Naveen were also injured in the encounter.
Defence officials said troops of 13 Rashtriya Rifles, police and 45th battalion of CRPF had earlier cordoned the house of Rahit Mir, son of Ahad Mir, following a tip-off about the presence of terrorists there. But the terrorists, too, had been forewarned. They apparently took Major Suri hostage, while Khushal Singh was killed in the initial firefight. But the terrorists later killed the Major, and continued to fire indiscriminately till mortar shells fired by the soldiers razed their shelter to the ground. In the earlier encounter on Tuesday, two terrorists and two military personnel— marine commando Chandrashekhar and gunner Diwakar—were killed in an encounter in Rafiabad forest in Baramulla district. )))
