Maruti driving to Gujarat?

One more reason for industries to move away from Haryana. Power deficit is increasing and Haryana is not able to produce enough electricity for the businesses whereas Gujrat has the surplus electricity.

The Haryana Power Purchase Centre, in an RTI reply, has said that the peak power demand in Haryana will shoot up by over 3,000 MW in the next four years. Cities like Gurgaon might see their power deficit increasing, said sources.

Another feud between mangaement and labor broke out yesterday leading to death of one employee.
If the trend continues, Maruti may shift its entire base to some other state, perhaps Gujarat itself.

[h=1]Labour unrest at Maruti’s Manesar plant, production halts[/h]
Simmering discord between the workers and management of Maruti Suzuki India once again led to suspension of production at the company’s Manesar (near Gurgaon in Haryana) plant this evening. A prolonged labour unrest had crippled the same plant between June and October last year too, leading the country’s largest car maker to lose passenger car market share.

A company statement said that at least 40 of the company’s senior managers have been injured in violence which broke out on the shop floor and had to be rushed to hospitals. A company official told Firstpost “some bones were broken, some heads smashed…..people went on rampage”.
Unrest at Manesar plant. Naresh Sharma/Firstpost

Though this company official said it was “some minor shop floor issue” which was blown out of proportion by workers, it is certain that by tomorrow morning, neither will tempers cool down nor is production likely to resume.
Last year, around the same time, disgruntled workers found a unique way of disrupting work to support their demands – create serious quality defects in cars so that the they fail the mandatory VI (vehicle inspection) quality test and are sent to the holdup area within the factory instead of being shipped out to dealers.
These workers are young, with avergae ages of 27-28 years, and last year they resorted to doing crazy things like cutting wire harnesses from cars which are fresh off the assembly line, removing or loosening hinges on car doors so that sometimes, entire doors have fell off during pre-shipment quality checks! Other such instances of deliberate sabotage included denting a freshly made car so it would need repairs, using parts specific to one model on another model, etc.
An NDTV report suggested that a fire broke out at the Manesar plant earlier today “as thousands of protesting workers locked its main gates trapping officials inside”. This report said the labour unrest followed the suspension of a worker by the company.
Last month, a report in the Economic Times had said that the Haryana Labour Department has initiated proceedings against Maruti Suzuki executives for allegedly violating the signed agreement of October 19, 2011 with its workers under provisions of labour laws for its Manesar plant.
This report further said that the company has not formed any of the two required committees—Grievance Redressal and Welfare Committee—as promised under the agreement. Also, other critical issues such as wage settlement were also being negotiated between the company and its workers for the last few months without any solution.
Maruti’s Manesar plant produces Swift, A-Star and SX4 models.

This is bad for Maruti.

factory set on fire during Wednesday's violence, police said.Labour unrest at the factory, where the union has accused India's biggest car manufacturer of anti-worker and anti-union activities, cost the company more than $500 million in lost production in 2011.
Wednesday's violence flared after a disciplinary incident against one employee.
Company officials say workers began to attack senior management during discussions, while the workers' union said its representatives were attacked first.
"The police have taken charge of the premises," Maruti Suzuki spokesman Puneet Dhawan said.
"One body was recovered from the premises. It is charred beyond recognition."
A human resources manager at the plant is missing and his family has been flown in to identify the body, said Maheshwar Dayal, deputy commissioner of police in Gurgaon.
A Maruti source, who declined to be identified, confirmed that a human resources manager was missing.
"We have created a special investigative team to look for the leaders of the riot. We will make more arrests soon," Dayal said.

Ei Mochizuki, a Tokyo-based spokesman for Suzuki Motor Corp, which controls the Indian carmaker, said one local employee had died and two Japanese employees had been hospitalised after the unrest.

The factory, which can make 550,000 vehicles a year and accounts for around a third of Maruti's total output, would remain closed on Thursday, the company said.
Shares in the carmaker, which saw its sales fall 11% in the fiscal year to March, partly due to the protracted labour strikes, fell as much as 9.4% on Thursday.
Murder charges
Iron rods and other sharp tools lay scattered outside the factory gate on Thursday, next to a burned out security building, as 1,200 police officers secured the site.

Fifty management personnel and 9 police officers were injured during the clashes, Dayal said.
Those arrested could be charged with murder, attempt to murder and arson, said KK Sindhu, commissioner of police in Gurgaon.
Maruti and the Maruti Suzuki Workers Union (MSWU) said the violence stemmed from a disciplinary incident involving one employee.
"To resolve the issue amicably, members of the senior management met the union. During the talks, the workers attacked the members of the senior management, executives and managers," Maruti said in a statement late on Wednesday.
MSWU president Ram Meher accused the company of "anti-worker and anti-union activities" in a statement on Thursday.
"The gates were closed by the security on behest of the management and the bouncers brutally attacked the workers with sharp weapons and arms," Ram Meher said in the statement.
"They, joined by some of the managerial staff and police later, beat up a number of workers who have had to be hospitalised with serious injuries. The bouncers, who are anti-social elements on hire, also destroyed company property and set fire to a portion of the factory," Meher said.
The union is keen to talk with the company and government officials to resolve the dispute, Meher added.
Late last year, Maruti brokered a deal with workers that ended weeks of strikes and protests which cut into sales and market share.
"This incident shows that the management have also not learned anything from the last three strikes ... in 2011," DL Sachdev, national secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress, told reporters.
Charan Lal Sharma, labour minister for the state of Haryana, where the factory is located, told a television channel that he was travelling to the site to discuss the issue.

Read somewhere ki kisi manager ne kisi worker ko 'caste' based comment mara tha..or ussi se sara bawaal khada ho gaya..

This is really bad for maruti though...Its shares have already taken a hit..it needs to sort out the labor issues soon.

i said when they started this plant... previous unrest to bahot baad mai hua tha...

mera bhai maruti ke parts banane wali ek company mai production manager hai... jab maruti ka manesar plant suru huae thode hi din huae the... tab uska ek junior maruti se resign kar ke, uski company mai aaya tha... jab mere bhai ne us se pucha ki log to maruti join karne ki taak mai rehte hain to tu yahan aaya hai... aisa kitna hike de diya is company ne... to usne mere bhai ko bataya ki jis tarike se wahan kaam hota hai, us tarike se ek din wahan aise haalat ho jayangae ki, logo ke sur footengae... or ye baat usne nearly 2 saal pehle predict ki thi... usne bataya ki meri performance is hisaab se calculate hoti thi ki mai apne section mai labour ki kitni khichai karta hu... WTF is this!!! vo skilled labour hai... chaowk pe milne wali, eent-pathar dhone wali labor nahi hai... or jaisa bartaav wahan pe labor ke saath ho ruha tha, waisa bartaav to hum apna ghar banate time dhyadi ki labor ke saath bhi nahi karte...

uske is predicition ke picche kai reason the... 1). powerless union banana, 2). employees ko harass karna, 3). within origination (betweeen udhyog cihar plant & manesar plant) different policies forcefully laagu karwana... jaise or bhi kai reason hain...

japani sochte hain ki indian waise hi kaam karein jaise ki japani karte hain... or agar aisa possible hota to aaj india... india nahi japan hota...

or ye jo kuch hua... or jin logo ji jaan gai vo bach bhi sakti thi... as per that guy (my brother's subordinate) ye unrest morning se hi suru ho gaya tha... agar upper mgmt time pe police ko inform karti or mgmt ke sabhi logo ko jaldi ghar jane ki permittion de deti to... but japanio ne ye bol ke mana kar diya ki office ka time 5:30 tak hai or jo is se pehle jayega... uski leave count hogi or uspe action liya jayega... bechari mgmt agar jaan bachati to japanio ke action ka shikkar hoti... or action se bachi to labour ke gusse ka shikkar ho gai...

labour ko itna intense action nahi lena chahiye tha... but mugjhe lagta hai ki unko ye karne pe majboor kiya gaya hai... or sab log abhi un gareeb logo ko hi koss ruhe hain...

government must take strict action against those labors jinhone gusse mai aa kar ye sab unrest kiya... or un logon pe bhi action lena chahiye jinki manmani ki wahah se pehle to labor ko itna harass kiya gaya or fir kuch logo ki jaan gai...

Woh kaise? Are you talking about the previous unrest?

Thanks for all the details. It does provide a lot of insight into the problems.

Par main yeh nahi samajh paya ki Maruti management pe Manesar plant main aisa kya bhoot sawar ho gaya ki woh labour ke saath aise behave karne lage..? Udyog vihar mein to itni badi problem kabhi nahi hui? Maybe it was the competition and pressures to increase sales that caused management to hire contract workers and take harsh measures. But its a grave folly to treat your workforce shabbily however tough the competition maybe.

Ek bai Bihar ki labour band kar do laani Haryana mai... Koye kaam ho ja to NCR mai.. Haryana ki labour koni karee kaam,, joot jaroor baza sakei sai!

Absolutely Sir!!!

Everybody deserves respect. If someone is junior/younger/less educated/poor doesn't mean that he/she has no self-respect.

Or jis tarike se maruti mgmt manesar plant mai labor se kaam karwa ruhi thi, waise hindustan ke kisi kone mai karwa ke dekh le... thode din ke baad out-come yahi nikalna hai... agar apne tarike thode change kar le to, manesar mai bhi gurgaon ki tarah shanti se kaam chlega...

Maruti manear plant mai, labor se kaam lene ka tarika bhi 80's ke dashak ka hai... fir labor ne retaliate kiya vo tarika bhi 80's ka hai or dono hi ye baat samajhne mai fail ho gaye ki ye 2012 chal ruha hai(infact aadhe se jayada beet chuka hai :) )...
