Again Derailing the Discussion!!!!

Dear Members,

If some one looks at this thread, he/she will feel that there is going to be a whole lot of material to read. But as usual, some of the members got involved in personal bashing and the trend continues.

Listen, if Mayawati becomes the PM neither me nor any one else will be able to stop her. The thread was started to have some intellectual discussion, but did we actually achieve that?

Kindly be more pragmatic in your approach. The best discussion can be done only if we are not prejudiced and discuss the issue on logic without favor or fear.

My contention was on the pretext that she has projected herself as a candidate for the post. And that is the issue. To me it is once again an attempt to divide the society. What our most politicians are doing is what Britishers did for two centuries: Divide and Rule.

We might be a union of states, a democracy, but factually we are a highly divided community, based on religion, caste, beliefs and so on. And that is what is not good.

If we really want India a great nation, we need to look beyond the caste, religion, community we live in, State, Language we speak and any other thing that divides us as a Nation. A tall order, but not impossible to build. All that we need to do is educate every one we meet and make them see the logic in what we are saying. Will we suceed every time? Absolutely NOT. But then Journey Long or short, it starts with the "First Step" we take. Let us take that step.

We have to be realistic in our approach. It is easy for many to be idealistic, but that is not going to help the state of affairs.

Deepika:-

In a country with millions of impoverished/ uneducated people, the leader needs to be a person who understands the basic needs of people instead of knowing how to wear versace or gucci suits in my humble opinion.

That very fact is a part of her image and appeal. Her expensive suits or sophisticated behavior will only repulse, if at all, millions in her state. They need something more than that. So right or wrong, it helps her in gaining her personna.

Further, states like UP, Bihar or in general the entire rural india needs a leader(s) who can understand their basic needs before anything else. Its about priority of affairs.

We all need to be bothered about that before we bother about our politicians showing off their suits or english accent before westerners...how will that help if we are rotting inside?

About honesty? none of them (politicians) are. Your 'pick' Naidu has hundreds if not more cases and allegations (some proved, some not) of corruption against him and many people say that he is a multi billionaire to say the least...

There might be some who are...Manmohan singh (to some extent)...kalam and likes...but then look at historical facts/ emperical data...if you have that sort of a mentality, no one will let them be at the helm of affairs in the real sense...look at Manmohan...he is just a puppet and who really rules...everyone knows...so what is his honesty worth to those millions of impoverished?

No one is stopping many people like mayawati to become like her...its a free country...why dont those millions become like her? I dont believe its just destiny....I think there are qualities (leadership) in her which have enabled her to reach where she is...

As far as education is concerned, she really is educated than many or most others aspiring to reach the top post.

Sad reality is that in order to do any good for the public, you have to reach a political/ power position....and in order to do that you got to win an election...to do that you need to have tonnes and tonnes of money (else your GOODWILL alone will not get you anywhere) and for all that money...u gotta do what you gotta do!!

All said and done, I dont support her to be the PM. But you should think along the above lines also while thinking about the pros and cons in her candidature....

Anyways these were just my 0.02$....I have no political affinity with her at all....

Hold on!

Hold on!!!!!!!!seems u got carried away a bit....I am very much realistic

i guess i talked about dressing sense and not about Gucci or versace....or u mean who doesn't wear them is not stylish?well my idea of being sober and stylish is different...even in a khadi suit one can look very sober...But forget it you wont understand coz its a girl thing:D....

Do u mean to say that someone who doesn't belong to U.P or Bihar can't do good for the people living there...now what really was that?is there any logic behind it?i think we all have same basic needs and emotions which can be fulfilled by someone who understands humanity rather than one who is from the same place.

Well as i said dressing up reflects one's personality and i find Mayawati a sad choice in every damn way...be it dressing sense or her political agenda blah blah blah...her dressing sense happened to be just one of the reasons for my dislike towards her but lot of people(including u)are making it a BIIIIIIIIIIIIG deal.......and hey i never said one has got to have western accent...i guess i dint mention this one at all.Right?

Excuse me i found Naidu better than Mayawati as some people were all ga ga over works done by her during her tenure as CM ....and i mentioned his name becuase in his tenure his state had lot of developments...if that is the point to consider then Naidu is a better choice.

Manmohan Singh may be mere puppet but atleast he is not a greedy thing filling bank accounts with dirty cash.He may not be able to take decisions on his own but atleast he doesn't even dream to do any harm to public or exploit them.Infact he must be suggesting some developmental activities to the "HIGH COMMAND" for our country's betterment. How many of them gets approval is another matter:)...So if,at all,you meant any comparison between Mayawati and Manmohan Singh as PM....Manmohan Singh is better than her any day.
If we choose a dishonest and corrupt lady like Mayawati...do u think she will turn into a sage and will stop extracting money?Ofcourse not...She would make more money enjoying more power.

In India its not difficultt to make fool out of people. They dont have unity and mind of their own to think wisely and act for the betterment that's why politicians like Mayawati reaches at the top with their so called leadership qualities. To stand tall in politics one has to stand on a bundle of sins....and these sins are considered leadership qualities by some noble and thoughtful people like you.
She may be educated but her actions doesn't indicate that at all.To me she is one illiterate lady who knows how to exploit emotions of lot of foolish people. That indeed is the finest of the qualities exist in the world. One needs to have exceptionally wicked ways for it:)

Do you mean she is making tonnes and tonnes of money to good for public.Joke of the century:D

You say you dont want her to be PM and then you try defending her....So diplomatic!!!!what is it all about?

Your two cents were not worth it,better luck next time :)......yup ur reply suggests that you have no affinity with her at all :)

Interesting thread and interesting opinions!!!!!! All along I believed that one requires support of 272 MPs to become PM. I have been enlightened indeed that looks, dressing sense, etc. are important as well.

I believed that we are a democratic country and democracy does not discriminate on the basis of one's caste, gender, religion, upbringing, looks, dressing sense. If the electorate considers one fit enough to represent it despite what you or I may like or dislike about him/her, we have to accept that. If the constitution makes someone eligible to become PM after garnering the support of requisite elected representatives, we have to respect that.

If we exclude democratic rights (franchise and contesting) on the basis of caste, gender, religion, criminal antecedents (i believe criminal antecedents can be misused by motivated and repressive governments to bar people from contesting) we are undermining the basic principle of democracy.

Deepika:

Your words reflect a lot of immaturity and your manner of replying is not only rude and condescending but also misses any point (even if you have real point in there)

Before you hit reply and fire away, I would strongly suggest taking a deep breath and look before you leap.

Either ways it is no use conversing with you as you seem to argue more than you converse!

However I am glad that you still did not miss the regards after all those rude illogical remarks you made!

No Harm in being Ambitious...

Dear All,

Discussing women, politics and religion should be avoided on public forums. The discussion does get a bit nasty and personal too. Discussing Ms Mayawati is not easy. Those who forget the manner in which our society developed and existed, should never forget that a large section of people have suffered thousands of years of neglect and discrimination. Even our own community has suffered this neglect and discrimination. Whether this discrimination was right or wrong is easiest to answer. Yes, it was wrong. But then, power has always corrupted. Having spent my childhood in a village, I have seen this discrimination with the Harijans first hand. In fact we all have. It is prevalent even as I write.

Today, the discriminated have made a business out of such discrimination. Have you seen a Harijan boy ride a motorcycle in a small town? He is not riding a motorcycle but freedom. It is a way of expressing independence. This is what political power has done.

Ms Mayawati represents this class of neglected people. That’s why wearing of golden crowns in a public rally, huge birthday celebrations and unveiling of statues. These acts are deliberate and represent the so called freedom from oppression. And as and whenthey get political power, they will corrupt. It is a cycle. Believe you me, Harijans feel proud when Income Tax department sends Ms Mayawati a notice. She collects double the amount in the next rally, pays tax and the rest is white money. She knows that when other classes can use money as a means of power, why should she be left out? Let us not even debate the right and wrong of it.

My personal belief is that the day she becomes PM, it will be the beginning of end of her politics. In a democracy, there is no greater fun than being the kingmaker than becoming the king.

Should Ms Mayawati become the PM? Why not? It is a numbers game. A democracy, by the way, is a bad form of government. Who so ever can manage the numbers, will rule. How to manage numbers in a country as corrupt as ours? Well, your guess is as good as mine. Therefore, let’s all wait for the 16th May 2009.

Best regards,

Sir,

Let us assume Mayawati becomes the PM. Would not that be the ultimate achievement of our democracy? Would not the definition - by the people, for the people and of the people hold true in every sense of the word?
People ask Rahul Gandhi -- when will u be the PM... why?...because is the product of a political legacy that dates back to the freedom struggle...is not this strictly against the principles of democracy...??
on the other hand Mayawati is a product of democracy...empower the downtrodden..thts what the constitution says..and thts wht is being done by her...

another question-- would we all be still peeved at the thought of her becoming the PM if she did not belong to the scheduled caste?

Sir,
As usual excellent analysis. And I feel that she should be given a chance to be the PM even if it is for a few days like Mr Vajpayee had in 1996.

Very wise words Sir.

I underscore your judgement and believe that if someone can play the game and come out as the winner then so be it!

After all many a times it is easier to reach the top. But to stay there, you will have to prove your mettle.

As for this particular lady on this particular time and day, I do not realistically see her getting close to that coveted position she has expressed her ambition for, but if she does, then Power to her!

You are Missing the Point!!!

Dear Mr. Kuldeep Singh Ji,

I think you are missing the point. I am neither for nor against any one becoming the PM. The issue is the way you project and the reason you give to get there is dividing our nation.

As Ms. Mayawati said in Rampur rally that "A dalit's daughter should be the PM" in this country, thereby projecting herself as a candidate, during post election scenario. There are millions of "Dalit's daughters" in our country and a lot of them may be even more equipped to run the nation then Ms. Mayawati herself. The question is that the statement divideds the communities/ Nation, and all political leaders if they really love the nation (which I doubt) should have disected the statement in this light and made public aware of this divisive politics. But then most of them are doing the same thing for years.

The issue is to educate the people about the value of vote and wisdom of choosing the right candidates to represent them at State and National level. Why should "Caste" of a candidate be the most important factor for his/her competence?

Sir,

Clarification first :

I m not endorsing "caste" as the criteria for becoming the PM. Nor have I said you are against anyone becoming the PM (you would be last person to make such irrational comments)

Abt the point of discussion - what you r saying is the end is correct but the means to get to that is not right.
what i am saying is that since everyone use the same means so in the ultimate analusis the means do not matter .

Now politics and division go hand in hand and its true irrespective of time and place. But your concern (which I understood ) is that the combination of politics and divison should not threaten the territorial integrity and the soverignity of the country -- is partly correct . Such divisions do hamper the growth of the country but when it comes to grave national crisis people do put together a united front and its the Army (which is above such divisions I believe) which leads from the front.

Now for a moment lets not talk about Mayawati. Lets take another female- Satyawati (fictional ) who is from economically poor background, had to face difficulties throughout her life but in the end overcome all the obstacles and through the rigours of Indian political system becomes the PM....would not that be the ultimate win of the Indian democracy? Giving power to the common people.

Coming back to Mayawati...I will repeat my earlier question - If she was not a dalit , would we be having this discussion?? What will be your answer sir?- yes or no?

[by we I mean the jatlanders]

Another point was love for the nation -- I personally know people (and I am sure that you also do) who love their motherland but they love their careers more....so that again is a very subjective thing.

Education for all -- its a dream that should be realized sooner than later...but if everyone would be educated...who would work as our drivers?? our kaam wali bais?? our sweepers??...how will the urban middle class survive if people become educated?? who will vote then??...so this dream/mirage is still far away.

P.S - i am not sure if i am talking on the same frequency...kindly correct me!!

Mayawati is so scandulous that she is making people fight even when they are far away from India:D.......When you are not a great admirer of Mayawati then why did you seek my replies on certain issues so desperately? She doesn't have even a single quality to be a PM and surprised to see people willing to make her PM out of "Sympathy" for a "Dalit Behan" and some people find her leadership qualities incomparable...well anyone can be a leader and can rule if one has so many pet criminals working for her.Hitler also ruled and is a source of inspiration to lot of people(m sure u know that)...Does it make him a inspirational personality in real?He was nothing but a dictator and still people admire him.I consider his admirers insane.Even the worst person can have some admirer for his wrong doings.Getting inspired from someone for negative and cruel characterstics is no sanity. Now m sure again you will call my reply illogial, but u also take a deep breath and read it again it will start making sense to you:)
If my reply was rude(as u think)ur pervious reply and this one are no less....you also dont sound very well informed as u started off with some exceptionally funny illogical reasons....aapne ek kahawat suni hai"LADAI BARABAR ROVAI BAADH"....please dont mind it was on a lighter side....My reply was very much logical and apt....had it been illogical you wud have never missed any chance of highlighting that part and again shooting questions....I dint miss any point....and if it seems to u,then its you problem. If you are hurt in any way my sincere apologies. But its not only you who gets hurt.I think arguments were something u started off with and now u have put the blame on me very skillfully. You suggested me to take a deep breath before replying, why dont u implement the same on yourself. When you shoot burning questions how can you expect icy minty answers?

Deepika Singhroha

Regards,
Vikas

I do not endorse Mayawati's brand of politics but where does this amount to dividing society any more than other politicians of the country. Leave alone UP everywhere in India tickets are distributed and candidates are elected on considerations like caste, religion, etc.
Lots of people are throwing their hats in the ring on their perceived strengths. Here are some examples:
1. BJP projecting L K Advani as 'Majboot Neta' - Advani's term as home minister hardly differentiates him from so many other ministers in demonstration of 'majbooti' or 'nirnayakta'
2. Rahul Gandhi saying that Manmohan Singh is a Sikh and he is yet to find a weak Sikh in response to BJP's below the belt campaign on Mr Singh's perceived weaknesses or strengths

Mayawati, despite our loving to hate her, is least bothered about what we think about her; we are not her electorate; she doesn't represent our aspirations. Infact it is really the triumph of our democratic system that she is the Chief Minister of a state, which is deeply fractured on the lines of caste and religion, and is strongly prejudiced against women assuming responsibilities in public life.

So Mayawati is doing what other politicians do. She has an electorate that she knows. That electorate will probably buy the Dalit card and support her in becoming her the PM.

We as a plural society (our media more so) often prided itself with a fact that we are a nation of Hindu majority with a Sikh Prime minister, a Muslim President and a Catholic as the head of the largest political party. (A Hindu majority nation???? and my Civics text books told us that we are a secular republic)

So the point is the kind of bad press Mayawati often manages to get from the English media is symptomatic of the malaise that afflicts it. Mayawati has obvious flaws but leaders of far stronger characters like Chaudhary Charan Singh have been victim of such prejudiced press in the past. Infact in this age of smses people receive messages from TOI exhorting the "Educated Middle Class" to go out and vote. (I believed that press did not represent any particular section of the society.)

Let Maywati be. If she has it in her to become PM, she will be. If she has it in her to stay for long as PM she will be. If she turns out to be a good PM that will be good for India. If she turns out to be bad, she will not stay long.
