It is a pity that this is what India has to choose from.
There is nothing impressive about Rahul Gandhi. Without his surname, he would find it hard to get even a clerk's job. Or maybe it is because of the surname and the associated luxuries that he has become like this. Earlier, the story was that he is young, give him time, he would show his mettle. Now after 10 years in public life, he has nothing to show as achievement, despite being more powerful than the PM. He chooses to make noise about issues like a celebrity endorses charitable causes. Getting bored, let's go to Bhatta Parsaul! I am not even sure he wants to be the PM as that would mean being in public life 24*7. Right now, he comes out of his hole when he wants and goes missing when he wants to enjoy life.
Two types of people love Modi. The first type are the religious fanatics who see him as some sort of saviour of Hindus, who has showed Muslims their true place. The second type love him for being a good administrator who has a clean (corruption wise) image. Some of the second type carry a bit of hindu victimhood in them, but the good governance bit is important to them. Unlike the first type, who would love Modi even if he was the biggest crook in the world. I agree that Modi is a good administrator, and there is an understandable attraction for him given the current state we are in. But I am not sure if that is sufficient in itself to be a good PM. He is arrogant and dictatorial. One can live with that as long as he doesn't do an Indira on us. But more importantly, he is right now a very polarizing figure. I know people would argue that nothing has been proved against Modi, which is fine as a legal defense. But perception is more important than reality and he is perceived to be a minority baiter. He created this image as it suited him well politically in Gujarat 10 years back. But a nation can't afford to have a PM that invokes such strong reactions amongst people.
